BOX OFFICE: Tracking Indicates $55-60M Opening For Marvel's ANT-MAN

According to Box office analysts, via Boxoffice.com, Marvel's Ant-Man is on track to debut $55-60 million when it opens in North America on July 17. Considering the fact that we still have a few weeks to go until the film releases, these numbers could possibly go up, but that solely depends on Marvel, and how they continue their marketing for the film. With the first (mostly positive) reactions out for Ant-Man, the site describes Ant-Man's tracking as followed:

"Initial tracking figures show Ant-Man's total awareness level scoring 77 percent -- identical to that of Thor: The Dark World at the same point in its marketing cycle before earning an $85.7 million frame in November 2013 (the lowest Marvel debut post-2012's Avengers). However, Ant-Man's "definite interest" score is about 25 percent lower than the Thor sequel's."

So, as of now, Ant-Man looks as if it will be number one in the box office opening weekend. But the big question is, will it stay that way the second week? No one knows the answer to that, but they do say big things have small beginnings! What do you think? Sound off below with your thoughts!

Ant-Man needs to drop some fire ants on all those other films surrounding it. This should probably rise to around $75-80 mil (at best) opening weekend. I don't think anyone expects this to do GUARDIANS numbers, which was lightning in a bottle with an early August date and not much competition. Will it have legs though? Ant-Man is competing with:

- 2nd weekend for MINIONS
- 3rd weekend for MAGIC MIKE XXL and TERMINATOR: GENISYS (the latter looks like it'll get shat on)
- JURASSIC WORLD leftovers.
- Judd Apatow's (wo)man-child comedy TRAINWRECK, which has Lebron James in a supporting role that'll attract the NBA crowd (me) and Amy Schumer starting, which will attract her fanbase and the female comedy fanbase.
- The following weekend will have Adam Sandler's PIXELS, which all the lowest common denominator sheep will watch.

We'll wait and see, should do fine in the first week, but then Minions is coming, which will probably garner the most attention.

I hope the word of mouth is good on this and it better be a great film like the reviews suggested, otherwise it has some very stiff competition in the coming weeks

Somebody should check to see if @bropous had a heart attack today because of the SCOTUS ruling on gay marriage. They're coming for you, bropous!

I think it will do a lot better than this estimate.

I don't think the GA will care either way that the protagonist is black, rather, they'd probably be interested because it is a marvel film and it will probably have other recognizable heroes as well to pull people in to watch.

We should get back to convincing the world that @supercat is a white supremacist.

Good for Levi and axe. What are the odds that two guys without gag reflexes would've met at that bathroom stall in Chippendales?

Same thing as Guardians 3 weeks before it's release and we all know how that ended.
I don't expect Antman to do 90-100 but i would bet it will do around 75-85, which, unlike what many people these days think, is a pretty great opening weekend

@MexicanSuperman

Hellboy 2 made well enough for a sequel. It cost 85 million and made 160 million. They nearly doubled the budget in gross.

Hellboy 2 was never gonna get a sequel because Mignola said that before Hellboy 2 was made, Universal told him and Del Toro they would make Hellboy 2 but no matter what wouldn't do a Hellboy 3.

@SuperCat has seen the movie and said it was really funny. Said he hasn't laughed that hard at a movie since Roots.

@LEVITIKUZ

A lot of people don't understand how much money films need to make to be profitable. Theaters keep roughly 50 percent of box office, so a film has to make AT LEAST double its budget to even think about breaking even, and if we include marketing costs, most films have to make considerably more than double their budget.

So while Hellboy 2 may not have been a loss, it did not generate much profit at all.

@craigferguson

Dude, Black Panther will do just fine. The majority of moviegoers are not racist. Ever here of the box office draw of Sam. L Jackson or Denzel Washington?

Plus, black audiences will flock to this movie (maybe?), so I can see it opening with at least $60-70 million, more if audiences fall in love with the character in Civil War.

So don't worry. BP will be just fine.

The Blade movies were rated r which kind if affected it from grossing more than a hundred million each and besides it had minimal marketing strategy to ormolu the movies.

Black Panther already 3 years before it's release is getting more recognition as we speak and would also be appearing in Civil War so that is already guaranteed that people will know who he is.

Just hope that they do him justice and that we have a good screenwriter and a good director to make the film great. Trust me if the film is good, then it will make a lot money
