How Marvel's "Ant-Man" (2015) Has The Power To Change Superhero Movies Forever

Peyton Reed's Ant-Man film could change superhero films forever. Here's how!

Hey guys! Just a quick disclaimer: I don't know much about Ant-Man as I have not read to the comics so some things may be incorrect but bear with me on this one and don't crucify me please!

Okay, so we're all looking forward to Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man" right?... right?... Okay maybe not as much as what could have been Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man", but it's still a Marvel movie that we are all pretty hyped for. A new character, a new Avenger and a new cast.

Lately, there have been grumblings floating around on the Internet about how comicbookmovies are becoming a bit more stale and predictable due to the "big spectacle ending". These types of endings were seen in the Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, Dark Knight Rises and so on. Basically, the "climax" of the film usually results in the hero doing battle with the villain which results in huge collateral damage to a city and requires PLENTY of CGI shots. Although I love Marvel, they have been a repeat offender of this. Let's break down the Marvel movies quickly:

"Iron Man" (2008): Big ending with Obadiah Stane that destroyed a bus and some cars. Although this is a relatively small battle compared to The Avengers, it still required quite a bit of CGI and had a huge amount of destruction.

"The Incredible Hulk" (2008): Huge climax battle between the Hulk and the Abomination which resulted in part of New York being absolutely demolished. Plenty of CGI needed.

"Iron Man 2" (2010): Drone battle.

"Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011): Thor and Cap 1  are my favourite on this list because they do NOT have a huge climax. Their endings are emotionally charged and have very little destruction/action (I am not accounting for the Destroyer scene in Thor, only the Thor/Loki battle).

"The Avengers" (2012): 'Nuff said.

"Iron Man 3" (2013): Big crane battle with the Iron Legion and Killian's minions.

"Thor: The Dark World" (2013): Big battle with Malakeith destroying quite a bit in a battle in London.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014): Huge helicarrier battle.

So where the HELL am I going with this? Well, I believe that "Ant-Man" has the potential to possibly break this mold. Based off the footage description coming out of the recent Comic-Con, we hear elder Pym talking about how much he hates superheros because of the destruction they cause. This could lead Ant-Man to having a much smaller and much more emotionally charged showdown with his adversary (who has been confirmed to be Yellowjacket).

So what do you guys think? Would you be up for a smaller conclusion? Sound off below!

I wouldnt say change superhero movies, maybe the MCU. Plenty of Superhero movies dont rely on huge destruction, such as: Daredevil, The Dark Knight, Batman 89, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Catwoman?, Spiderman 3, Spiderman, X-men, X2, and others i am definitely forgetting

Ant man will suck, it's gonna be cheap comedy and no action it will only do good because of Marvel fans that eat everything.

That whole climax thing isn't exclusive to superhero movies. All blockbusters have things like that. Changing that little thing isn't breaking the mold.

@DCGuy I kind of prefer DC to Marvel but shut up. Ant-man should be awesome if it's done right. That whole espionage angle a hopefully a bit of adventure movie through him shrinking should be awesome to see.

As far the conditions of this movie, I say its another IRONMAN3 in the making, which is bad.

it will be smaller both characters shrink lol. but i can see it ending in a battle where they are shrinking and growing. they probably wont do as much damage. they could be battleing on an office desk then grown back and break the desk.

but yeah i think this would be more of a 1v1 maybe 2v2 battle and not a destruction spectacle.

@DCGuy The Atom can explore the shrinking powers better than Ant-man because he can became much smaller but Ant-man is getting a movie so he'll probably have more interesting effects. CW just doesn't have the time and budget to explore them as well.

It hasn't been confirmed that Arrow' Ray Palmer will actually use Atom powers. Not to mention that, as others pointed out, Ant-Man will have a multimillion budget...

I still think that Ant-Man could be good but i just don't know if it's the right time to say that it will change comic book films, that's a huge statement. Although, i do hope your predictions come true and i do hope the film will be great.

Ant-Man won't change shit. Yeah it might not fall in to the mold of other MCU's, but the Marvel Studios Execs aren't gonna look at Ant-Man during production of ANY of their other movies and try to tone the ending down because of THAT movie. No CBM is going to change because of Ant-Man being smaller. THAT'S THE WHOLE [frick]ING POINT!!!! They wouldn't change for Iron Man 4, Thor 3, Cap 3, Doctor Strange, Batman v Superman, Justice League, Wonder Woman, Batman, anyone.

They'd change if audience members begin to become CLEARLY turned off by big final battles, so much so that their profit margins are decreasing.

@DCGuy

Ant-Man being a comedy is the only thing saving it! Same with Guardians. These movies could become the campiest, cheesiest most laughable things ever. I'm going to pitch you a movie and YOU tell me whether it sounds horrible or not.

This movie follows a guy named Scott who's using a guy named Henry's costume to become small and save his business. He also talks and rides Ant's.

That sounds like shit. Now if they turn it into a comedy it's almost like indirectly telling the audience "I know you don't take it seriously. Neither do we so let's have fun" and it's instantly easier to except that.

If Batman & Robin advertised itself like a movie for younger kids that would appeal to older people who have seen the 1960s show because it will remind them of the puns, sillyness, bright colors, and bat everything's, I think it would've been received better. Fans would still probably hate it because Batman isn't a silly character, but I believe a lot of people would accept ti for what it is.

@TheReddestHood You can say the same thing about the planet of the apes movies.
Alphadog
Alphadog - 7/30/2014, 6:03 AM
It's true that Planet of the apes was already a franchise but the franchsie was in a bad state before the Rises came along. These movies have the Marvel brand behind it which might even be better than what Planet of the Apes had.Plus remember that Ant-man comes out just a few months after Age of Ultron which is guaranteed to be even bigger than the first Avengers and remember how much money Iron Man 3 made, this one won't do the same but it should at least be a sucess because of that.
DCGuy
DCGuy - 7/30/2014, 9:20 AM
@TheReddestHood yeah but I am not very fond of that type of movie, I can pass GOTG because they have action that balances the comedy but [frick]ing hell what's the big deal about ant man? besides once The Atom does this stuff on Arrow of course not the same level but still it will take the "fun" out of seeing Ant man do Ant man things don't you think?

Yep! It has the power to become the 1st Marvel movie to flop! That's what this movie is.

Unless the Marvel fanboys begged their parents for lots of money just to watch this movie 10 times in the theaters, so that they can tell to themselves its not a flop.

:-P

@DCGuy

How do you know Ant-Man doesn't have action to balance it? They haven't even started filming. Did you see the Ant-Man test footage last year or the year before? I'd love to see that on the big screen. Also we don't even know if Ray Palmer will become Atom in Season 3 of Arrow. We assume it will happen and it most likely will with 23 episodes, but we still don't know. And that can always end up being really bad.

And how would it take the fun out of Ant-Man? Different director. Different cast. Different medium. Different budgets. Different crew. Different FX teams. Different CHARACTERS!!! They'll end up being two different things.

What about Ray Palmer's Atom on Arrow do you KNOW will be better than Ant-Man's Scott Lang and Henry Pym and possibly Janet and Hope Van Dyne? Nothing! We don't even know if the Atom will appear as a little guy in Arrow, but we do know that about Ant-Man so you can't state as fact that Ray Palmer will even become the Atom in Arrow. He could just be a business man the entire time.

@TheReddestHood my reaction to ant man bro LOL sorry but this movie has no hope for me

@matthuliz Yeah, I agree with you.

Personally, I am not looking forward to this movie at all. I think the only people that are are the people that don't care about Hank Pym and Janet or that don't read comics, like the author here.

In my mind this movie has the power to change comic book movies in two ways:

1. If this movie is a financial success then it just lets Marvel know that it is ok to ignore the source material and continue making films that stray further and further away from the comics most of us have read our entire lives. This could only be bad for cbms, because in my opinion, the best cbms have been the ones that have stuck to the source material closest. If it is a success it will be even worse for comics. With the success of the Avengers and these other Marvel films, Marvel, unlike DC, has started to change the personalities and looks of the 616 characters to match their MCU portrayals. This if [frick]ing the worst thing imaginable in my mind. So the best way to stop it is to not support films like this one that veer widely from the source material. This movie could be the highest grossing movie of all time and I still will say it is a shitty cbm and an ever worse adaptation.

2. The second outcome is that this movie is a huge flop, which I am hoping. That way, Marvel might possibly learns to start making films that stick more closely to the source material. Which will make better cbm's and will have smaller impacts on the comics themselves. Yes, this means we might never get to see an Ant-Man film. But I would much rather have that than the abomination they are currently trying to force down our throats. However, the more realistic outcome is that Marvel waits a couple of years and reboots this doing it the right way, with a Hank and Janet centric script, as it should have been all along and with no [frick]ing geriatric Hank Pym, Scott Lang, and Pymless Yellowjacket.

Wow. This is one damn stupid article. I certainly wanted Man of Steel to not have such a spectacle, what Superman fan would want to see his power unleashed in live action. Its not like its a super hero movie. In fact, he shouldn't have had any powers at all. Yeah. That's a better movie!

JFC. Everyone looks forward to the climax. This is one retarded ass article. They are SUPER HEROES. Fiction. Larger than life. Cry more about CGI. Its necessary for these movies or you won't even have anything you've gotten.

Same as the jackass moderator on the AMC thing at SDCC saying he was tired of the city getting blown up in every super hero movie. IN WHAT SUPER HERO MOVIE DOES THE CITY ACTUALLY GET BLOWN UP??? NAME THEM. I can only think of Watchmen. And that had a purpose too. The shit is stupid. I'll continue to enjoy my spectacles in these movies.

Thankfully - granted I'll have to watch through AoU and Ant-Man in order to better make the details work - I have an idea for a movie. A movie that will make the FoX-Men and MCU co-exist; a movie that will fully restore the twins connection to Magneto, a movie that will restore Hank's connection to Ultron.

Or more specifically, I have an idea for a trilogy.

Avengers vs. X-Men
Avengers vs. X-Men: Revelation
Avengers/X-Men: AXis

Anyone want to know more, I'm wiling to elaborate.

Ant-Man had better do the physics right: falling from 1' looks different than falling from 100', even if you're shrunk. If they get the details right, I'm on board.
