Though we still don't know for certain, the chances of Jason Momoa playing Arthur Curry again after Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are very slim.
Setting aside the fact that James Wan's sequel will officially be the final film in the current "DCEU" era before James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DCU begins to take shape, the movie is not expected to perform nearly well enough at the box office to warrant a third outing for Momoa's take on the King of Atlantis.
However, there have been persistent rumors that the Game of Thrones alum is set to take on a different role in the DCU.
While chatting to Fandango, Momoa was asked about the reports that he is in talks to play Lobo, and while he claims that he "hasn't received the call," he admits that he would jump at the chance to play the Main Man.
"So Lobo was... I collect comics, and I don't do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I'm like, 'Hello? It's the perfect role,'" he said. "I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it's a f*ck yeah. I haven't received that call, so I don't want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I'm there."
Funnily enough, Momoa actually thought he was being brought in as Lobo when Zack Snyder cast him as Aquaman. The actor also confirms a previous report that he originally auditioned for Batman, but he had a feeling that he wasn't quite right for that character.
"I originally thought I was going to be playing Lobo in the very beginning," Momoa explained. "I auditioned for Batman, and I almost didn't do it, because I was like, 'This is silly. It's not going to be me. Why am I auditioning for Batman?' But it was just a run-of-the-mill audition, and then I get called in right after Affleck gets announced, and I'm like, 'Oh, f*ck. Of course, I'm going to play the bad guy.' So, I was like, 'Yeah, I'll come in, beat 'em up [Batman and Superman], and die, like I do.'"
"I got called in the office, and that was just like, 'Well, do you know who you're going to play?' I'm like, 'Yeah, Lobo! Of course. He's the only one who can fight Batman and Superman.' [Director Zack Snyder was] like, 'What? Lobo? No, he's not in this universe.' I'm like, 'What? Who the hell am I supposed to play?' And then, I wish he would've taped it, because he's like, 'Aquaman.' And I'm like [disappointed face]."
When it was explained to him that this was going to be a different take on the comic book hero, Momoa says he began to see the potential.
"Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.
All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, no, after w balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to swim into theaters on December 22.
