AQUAMAN 2 Writer Discusses Inspiration For The Sequel And Where THE TRENCH Fits Into The DCEU

During a recent Q&A with fans on social media, Aquaman 2 writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has teased the Black Manta-led sequel and shed some light on where The Trench fits into the wider DCEU...

With COVID-19 taking over, well, everything, we're seeing more filmmakers using social media to interact with fans. Last night, Aquaman writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick held an impromptu Q&A, and shed some light on plans for the sequel which is coming our way in 2022.

Asked if there's any one storyline the movie will be based on, the writer pointed out that fans will be better off turning to the Silver Age comic books featuring the villainous Black Manta.

"We're not taking any one particular comic book story and adapting it," he confirmed, "but if you want to know the vibe we're going for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta." It's been common knowledge for a while now that the amazing Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will return as Aquaman 2's lead villain, but that mention of the Silver Age is definitely noteworthy.

He was also asked for an update on the screenplay, and noted, "It's going good! I'm texting with [James Wan] about the draft of the script right now -- I think you're gonna dig it!"

As for the planned spinoff revolving around The Trench, Johnson-McGoldrick revealed that while the plan is for it to be set between the events of Aquaman and Aquaman 2, nothing is set in stone, and it definitely sounds like it's still early days for the highly anticipated project.

"Theoretically, it takes place between 1 and 2. But some pieces of this is still being worked out."

While productions in Hollywood have hit a standstill, Aquaman 2 looks likely to meet its planned release date, and given how great the first instalment was, it's hard not to be excited about this one.

@dracula - idk if he'll even be in this one tbh. There's a rumor that he was offered a co-lead role in the next Mad Max film, which would presumably shoot around the. same time...

The first one was a solid standalone film, but I can do without another Aquaman movie starring Jason Mamoa.

Fire Amber Heard and let Momoa make out with Yahya Abdul-Mateen instead.
