AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Concept Art Reveals Mind-Bending Alternate Takes On Ultron, The Hulkbuster, And More

Avengers: Age of Ultron may seem small in scale compared to movies like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, but back in 2015, it was a truly mind-blowing experience for fans.

As well as the introduction of the titular villain, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver also arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we even got to see the Hulkbuster in action! Throw in the Iron Legion and hints about Wakanda, and it's easy to see why so many fans were raving about this one.

Today, we're taking a look back at Avengers: Age of Ultron with an amazing gallery of newly surfaced concept art. While a handful of the pieces you'll see here have been featured on the site in the past, the vast majority have only been seen in low-res or simply haven't been covered on CBM, and we have work from the likes of Andy Park, Rodney Fuentebella, Josh Nizzi, and more!

From some crazy takes on the Hulkbuster and Ultron to keyframes to Earth's Mightiest Heroes in action and even some must-see "Iron Bots," there's an awful lot here you need to check out.

To do so, all you guys have to do is hit the "View List" button for the entire gallery!

I like this one:

I don't get why they fixated so much on a more expressive face, myself. It's not like Darth Vader ever needed lips.

@Chewtoy - i like the face on this one, but i think the body is a little too sculptural.

I personally loved the MCU's iteration of Ultron. Coupled with James Spader's voice...I found him quite menacing.

@Tonic24k - I like the character quite a bit too. If I had a main complaint, it was that they backed away from his anger in the 3rd act. We had a glimpse of it when he took Klaue's arm... I wish they had run with that for a better part of the final fight.

@Chewtoy - Yeah, it seemed he got a bit complacent after he powered up. I'm honestly hoping to see him again tho. He surely backed himself up on a server somewhere...

@Tonic24k - "backed himself onto a server somewhere"... i have to agree... and now that his father is dead (tony) what will he be like when he returns?

@Tonic24k - Agreed! I think the design could’ve been better but Spaders voice and his relationship to Tony was pretty good in my opinion

My wife is binge watching the blacklist and every time I hear James spader I think of ultron. They didn't put a lot of effect on his voice.

After phase 3 ended age of ultron was cemented as a goat. Argue with yourself

Ultron could have looked so menacingly cool. Why did they have to give him pupils??

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I kept scrolling thinking oh this one is better than what we got...oh so is this one...oh this one too...The pupils didn't bother me so much, it was those damn lips.

Everyone keeps talking about how much they wanted Ultron to resemble one of the other concept art pieces and to this day I'm still wondering why they didn't just.....make all the Ultron bots look different in the finale? This is what they did all the time in the source material

Ultron was so disappointing

So much potential so much wasted. Imagine if the Russos did Ultron justice...if only...
JonC
JonC - 12/16/2019, 1:47 PM
@TheRationalNerd - i can only say that in many movies they thought the villain was wasted... and then there was a big payoff for some in endgame... and based on that i can see how they might continue on with some prior villains in future movies giving them more depth and menace... just like zemo returning... i think ultron will return... and others as well. if you write them as a one and done villain you will burn through the big villains pretty quickly and then only be left with small fries... i think marvel is too smart for that. i think they have plans for many of the prior ones to still make appearances and impact the mcu.

@TheRationalNerd - Giving Ultron justice with the Russos would have meant turning the Hulk into a joke or sidelined it for some reason because from all i saw they either dislike the character or just don't know how to use him properly, and we wouldn't have what i think it's still the best 1v1 fight in the MCU, Hulk vs Hulkbuster.
TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 12/16/2019, 4:34 PM
@Darth258 - Honestly, you may have a great point there. The original ideas they had for Hulk in INFINITY WAR would've been better leading off into Endgame. And even in Wndgame I feel that fans wanted more of the ultimate destruction based Hulk than the jolly green giant that was seen. I have to say that the scene with Hulk vs. Hulkbuster was phenomenal however, we have to also keep in mind that Hulk was brainwashed in that scene and not just fighting out of arrogance. One things that the films need to do more of is truly demonstrating how hulk get stronger the angrier he gets. Elements like those were showcased under Whedon's helming of the series.
Darth258
Darth258 - 12/16/2019, 6:08 PM
@TheRationalNerd - Totally agree.
Hulk had a good arc evolving from th ape like monster to a sort of giant child. I would have liked the next step to be him more mature, but instead we had Banner basically hijacking Hulk's strength and losing all the will to fight.
To me the more balanced take is still the one from the Incredible Hulk, where you could feel he had that raw power and he was genuinely scary.

They can always bring ultron back
And even have it so that hank pym created him.
Just have hank pym create the nano prison and line it up with ultron guards (OK im totally stealing the avengers emh plot point).

Ultron has been alive this whole time, and just waiting for the opportunity to re-emerge. So he inhabits one of hanks nano bots, enlarges himself and starts replicating himself.

Then it's up to Scott Lang, stature, and wasp to fight him.
Maybe this can be what unites the new younger avengers

I mean they can go so many ways. And since this is a NEW Ultron, you can get someone else to do his voice
JonC
JonC - 12/16/2019, 1:49 PM
@Vigor - the "ultron" protocol already existed when tony was discussing it with banner... the question begs to be asked... did pym create it in the first place and tony just came across it like so many other things he has come across... like the hidden new element he "discovered" from his dad's work in IM2

AOU is a bit underrated as far as I'm concerned.

The first time Ultron confronts The Avengers at the party is one my favorite scenes in the entire MCU.
