EDITORIAL: A Theory Regarding Andy Serkis' Character In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

For months now, fans have been speculating on the mystery role that Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis will be playing in Avengers: Age of Ultron. With the trailer now officially released, giving us our first look at this character, I believe I may have figured out the identity of his mysterious role. Enjoy!

By now, most of you will have seen the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron. If you haven’t, then stop whatever you’re doing and watch it right now. It’s glorious. But amidst all the Ultron awesomeness and Hulkbuster awesomeness and Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch awesomeness and Captain America awesomeness and the sheer amount of destruction wrought upon Earth and its mightiest heroes by Ultron, there’s a chance that you may have missed a few smaller moments. One of which is our first look at the character played by the mo-cap master himself, Andy Serkis.

It was revealed a few months ago that Serkis would be helping out Mark Ruffalo with the motion capture work required to bring the Hulk to life, and that he had been cast in a minor role in the film. Ever since then, we’ve had plenty of rumours about the identity of his character- ranging from Phineas Horton to Uatu the Watcher. But now that we’ve got an official look at his character, and some plot details involving vibranium and Ultron going to Africa, a theory has emerged regarding the identity of his character, one that would tie in with numerous rumours. And, seeing as how I am 100% on board with this theory, I believe that Andy Serkis is in fact playing Ulysses Klaw.

For the uninitiated, Ulysses Klaw was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first appeared in 1966 as a villain opposing the Fantastic Four. Despite his origins fighting Marvel’s First Family, he is much more well known as a long-time enemy of T’Challa, the Black Panther. Klaw was a scientist working on applied sonics, and created a sound gun that is powered by vibranium- which just so happens to come from a massive meteor that crash landed in Wakanda millennia ago. Later on, he was converted into a being made of pure sound (don’t ask), and went on to become one of the key members of the anti-Avengers team the Masters of Evil.

So what does all of this have to do with Age of Ultron? Let me explain. It’s evident from the trailer that Ultron has many different forms- we know of three so far, and there may be more. Another interesting shot is of liquid metal pouring over a metal hand, which is probably Ultron making his final form. In the comics, Ultron’s body is made from adamantium- however, with the rights to Wolverine and therefore that particular metal firmly over at Fox, it seems natural that vibranium would take its place. And where do you find vibranium? Wakanda, of course!

Many rumours have stated that Ultron at some point will head to Wakanda to get some vibranium to construct his final form out of. So my theory is that Ultron will enlist the help of Ulysses Klaw to get a hold of vibranium, as Klaw is one of the foremost experts in that field. Chris Hemsworth already namedropped vibranium at SDCC in July, and it has already appeared in the MCU- Cap’s shield is made of the stuff. Wakanda has been referenced numerous times in the MCU as early as Iron Man 2, and as recently as the premiere of the second season of Agents of Shield. And this isn’t just connected via rumours and references- Serkis also bears a striking resemblance to the character, as this image shows:

This could all be building up to an eventual Black Panther film in Phase 3. Kevin Fiege has said that the project is ‘definitely in development’, and Stan Lee has stated numerous times that Marvel Studios are working on a film starring the King of Wakanda. The introduction of his arch-nemesis in a film as massive as Age of Ultron would definitely help to build publicity for the film and raise public awareness of the character and his mythos. Serkis is an extremely talented actor with a wide body of work, and it would be awesome to have him appear as a villain like Klaw. I could be completely wrong ad he could just be playing a random scientist or archaeologist (remember all the speculation about Nathan Fillion’s role in GOTG?), but I doubt Marvel would have shown his charcter in the trailer and got an actor as talented and popular as Serkis for a throwaway role.

So that’s it from me for now. Like my theory about Andy Serkis’ character? Have a theory of your own? Let me know in the comments below! Live long and prosper!

Agreed Vulcan. Though it's is an overwhelmingly popular theory (to the point that it'd be a HUGE letdown if it doesn't happen), this is a well written piece. Have a thumb mate.

My suggestion would be to expand a little more on what Klaw's involvement in The Avengers means for the Black Panther movie, and perhaps add a bit of background on the character for the fans (like myself), who don't know too much about him - that could be really cool.

@RebelVulcan - Not a problem mate, yeah I can see that - I've personally found I've got more confidant about writing just by writing more! And I appreciate your support too, glad you like my stuff!

On the Superhero TV stuff, I've decided to reign it in a bit on CBM. I'll still produce them on a weekly basis on my blog, The Tiny Screen, (I'm hoping to publish the latest one this evening), but I prefer writing Editorials and maybe a few Fan-Casts over here on CBM.

That said, I'll probably do a big version of the Superhero Show review on CBM at around December during the shows' mid-season breaks, and another at the end of the season.

But back to your work mate: keep at it! I'll be sure to drop-in with my thoughts whenever you make an article :)

I'm still waiting for a movie where Andy Serkis plays every character through motion capture, even the background extras

It's a good role for Serkis, for if he is truly to become klaw, the living sound klaw, I would imagine that part would require a lot of mo-cap.

Was gonna say the exact same as TheNRedHood...about to groan at the old and obvious take, but you presented it very well, with some nice MCU tie-ins, well done! Thumb ya too...

It really does seem like he's Klaw, I hope that's the case and we finally get a Black Panther movie at some point in Phase 3. With Serkis playing Klaw, he'll no doubt be the best villain we've seen in a solo film; possibly giving Loki and Red Skull a run for their money.

I was just having this discussion with someone on Twitter. In my opinion the Black Panther solo film should feature a different villain, Serkis just doesn't fit the profile of a Marvel Studios bad guy for me.

Pretty sure you nailed it with Ultron going to Klaw to obtain vibranium from Wakanda.
This was well written, good speculation.

Had this theory, Klaw would be in film, back when they released behind the scene photos of some stunt doubles in cap and armor gear. The last photo had a stunt double in Klaws outfit and had his trademark beard. Everyone made fun of me for freaking out, and stating Wakanda will be revealed to the world.

There is a flashback scene with Cap and Peggy. Perhaps the flashback scene is really a memory that Vision has pulled from Peggy's mind and he is showing Cap this memory. Maybe this memory is Peggy and the SSR raiding Klaws' location because he has found vibranium. Peggy and the SSR thought they collected all of Klaws' vibranium, but Klaw has some hidden in a secret base. And Ultron is seeking this location to find the hidden vibranium. Vision warns the Avengers of his plan, and it becomes a race between who can reach it first.

@RebelVulcan

Very well thought out!! And he DOES look like Klaw (before the transformation). Here's my thumb. There are many like it but this one is mine!

Something about Klaw's sound waves are the only thing that can melt Vibranium and make it assume new shapes, i.e. if you want to make something out of it you need Klaw (or Stark)'s technology,
