AVENGERS: ENDGAME Concept Art Reveals A Two-Face Style Transformation For Post-Snap Thanos

Thanos was left with lasting damage after unleashing the power of the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War, and new concept art from Avengers: Endgame shows just how extreme that could have been...

Avengers: Infinity War ended with Thanos emerging triumphant over Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but the cost of using the Infinity Gauntlet took its toll on the Mad Titan. Using it a second time to destroy the Infinity Stones only damaged the villain to a greater degree, and when The Avengers caught up with him in Avengers: Endgame, it seemed Thanos was already close to death.

While Thanos was badly scarred, what we saw was nowhere near as gruesome as this concept art shared on ArtStation by Chris Nichols. "Back in 2018 we were trying to figure out how much damage the Thanos 'snap' had caused to the side of his face," he recalls. "The Russos want us to explore an extreme version which obviously didn't make it into the film but really enjoyed making this."

As you can see, Thanos has been left looking like Two-Face in The Dark Knight, and while it's a visual that's perhaps a little too gory for the MCU, we can't help but be impressed by this design.

Comparisons to Christopher Nolan's 2018 movie are probably a big part of why Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers ultimately went in a different direction. As for Thanos, it's unclear whether he has a future in the MCU after dying (twice), but Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are a good indication that the Mad Titan's impact will continue to be felt moving forward.

I remember watching The Dark Knight as a young lad and being so baffled by how they did Two-Face's face. That CGI still holds up to this day in my opinion.

Don't think it would've been as impactful with Thanos though. Or rather, with Tony. Because if a brute like Thanos already looks like this, then Tony really would've burned away at the end of Endgame. And it probably wouldn't have been as emotional.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, still an underrated performance IMO. Understandably all the attention went to Heath following his death, but had he not of passed I think Eckhart's two face would have been favoured more and better remembered.

That's literally the same as Two-Face lol

@bobevanz - yep, it’s the artist quite literally taking an image of TF and sticking it on thanos. Everything matches perfectly even the eye.

@Deklipz - that's not how 3d modeling works.

@ElricReturns - It’s two faces injured side superimposed onto a rendered thanos. Obviously they either lifted it from the other model or simply copied it over. I do this shit all day every day. It’s not difficult in any sense.

Well, really puts to perspective his 50/50 plan for the universe, huh.

It would've taken away from Tony's death and how scarred his face was. So distinctly different from such a powerful being like Thanos who only lost some girth in his arm.

@GhostDog - “yup just got my cast taken off, how do you drink protein on just one side of your body right guys?”
Origame
Origame - 5/16/2022, 10:00 AM
@GhostDog - ...the dude was limping along and very clearly weakened, enough so the avengers were able to overpower him easily.

Plus it wouldn't have taken anything away from his death. If the stones could do that to Thanos, obviously Tony was gonna die from using them. That's what made the sacrifice meaningful. It's a classic set up/payoff situation.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/16/2022, 10:13 AM
@Origame - But I think seeing the physical manifestation of that sacrifice added to the weight of it all. You knew that even though he's got the suit and it's going to fight and take damage for him, he still would not recover.

The movie seeded this notion of Thanos and Hulk having damage. There are consequences to snapping.
Origame
Origame - 5/16/2022, 10:26 AM
@GhostDog - I mean...yeah. so I don't know why adding more damage to Thanos would take anything away from Tony's sacrifice.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/16/2022, 10:29 AM
@Origame - just adding more to the face. Thanos lost some of his arm. Same with Hulk so the seed is planted that maybe it just [frick]s up the arm because of the gauntlet but Tony's damage has spread far more than that.
Origame
Origame - 5/16/2022, 10:40 AM
@GhostDog - I mean, the damage spread all over his body to the point he had gray skin and died. Besides, it's not like you couldn't add more to Tony when adding more to Thanos.

Glad they didn’t, yeah it’s cool but nah. Now when Giancarlo/Gus did it, he friggin died… that was a good twist. But let’s not go down the Multiplicity route and make a copy of a copy, Steve

The mouth looks especially directly like Two-Face. But the eye does look particularly gnarly.

Yeah... I suspect this was one of those times when, as a designer, you purposly go too far in order for your boss to chose the design you *actually* wanted to use.

Another issue In had with Endgame.
If the Infinity Gauntlet is specially designed to harness the power of the stones then why would the use of those stones so damage the user of the gauntlet.

Now I can understand Stark being killed because he made his gauntlet on Earth and not Nedevilier from the power of a star.

But I still have an issue with Stark being able to make that gauntlet in the first place. There is only supposed to be one item that can harness the stone’s power.
Vigor
Vigor - 5/16/2022, 11:19 AM
@SpaceParanoids - why would there be only 1 item to harness the stones power?
And being able to harness something does not make one immune. For instance, and here's a personal example. My circuit breaker is designed to manage the output of my homes electricity under normal load. But recently my home was hit by lightning and over surged the breaker, breaking it

@Vigor - “ why would there be only 1 item to harness the stones power?”

If there isn’t then what was the point of even having the Infinity Gauntlet?

Too much of a rip-off if they had used this as opposed to too gory, IMHO.

Glad they didn’t go with that look as it definitely looks like the Two face style… I don’t mind the chard face look but definitely would rather his mangled look different from something already done.

That's totally the Dark Knight Two-Face design. Only that Thanos would've been more plausible still merrily running around like that.
AC1
AC1 - 5/18/2022, 8:18 AM
Interesting take but I'm glad they went with the version in the final cut. This was too extreme, looks too much like Two Face, and if the gauntlet did this to Thanos then at the end of Endgame half of Tony's head would've exploded
