AVENGERS: ENDGAME Writers Reveal What It Took For Captain America To Become Worthy

Avengers: Endgame scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely reveal what Steve Rogers needed to do before he could fully be deemed worthy of lifting Mjolnir during the final battle against Thanos!

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Steve Rogers nearly managed to life Mjolnir much to the horror of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's God of Thunder. Once Avengers: Endgame arrived in theaters, the Russo Brothers said Captain America could always lift the Asgardian weapon, but chose not to.

However, it seems writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have a different interpretation, as they've explained that the reason he didn't lift Mjolnir before this point was because he wasn't fully worthy yet. To get there, he had to resolve his differences with Tony Stark after Captain America: Civil War revealed that he knew The Winter Soldier killed his parents.

Captain America lifting Mjolnir to take the fight to Thanos remains perhaps one of the most jaw-dropping scenes in the entire history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its a moment which saw theaters across the globe erupt in cheers and applause.

To announce their own live commentary for Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers shared a beautiful new photo of Mjolnir, and you can see that and McFeely and Markus's remarks below.

That makes more sense than ''he was worthy but he didn't choose to embarrass Thor''. I mainly agree with the writers as we're talking about the guy that embarrassed a random dude on his morning walk in DC. And why embarrass a random guy and not someone you actually consider a friend?

@MalseMarcel - I mean I don't consider what he was doing to Sam "Making fun of" it was more just messing with someone. Like why would Sam be embarrassed that Captain America was a faster runner than him.

Remind me again who said that Steve was worthy all along like in AoU? The Russo bros?

What's the in-story/canon explanation?

@Doomsday8888 - What's the in-story/canon explanation?

There's kind of no such thing. We've got writers and directors saying what they think, but unless some future movie makes it explicit (and there's no reason they would), all we have is the text. Unless you think maybe Feige is the ultimate authority, but he's not talking.

Personally, I like to think Asgardian tech has some kind of AI in it. When Odin made his enchantment in Thor 1, he was essentially password protecting it somehow. Something like:

"𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘺, 𝘔𝘫𝘰𝘭𝘯𝘪𝘳, 𝘐 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘬. 𝘖𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘉𝘰𝘳'𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘬𝘦. 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘶𝘱 𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯."

And in Ultron, the Mjolnir AI was like "I really like this Cap guy. I'mma let him move me a little."

@Spock0Clock
Needless to say that Headcanon trumps everything.
Although i thought...there was some comic or maybe Feige said something about it, his word kinda means something.

I dig your theory tho. :3

@Toonstrack - How would you compare it to Infinity War?

@kylo0607 - @kylo0607 - Its difficult to mr because they are both sides to one story. IF was spectacular and probably the better movie on a technical basis but seeing the final act of Endgame and its buildup a better film journey IMO

Every time the writers explain Endgame I feel like I always agree with them more.

@MarvelDCAllDay - except the time travel stuff they completely contradicted what they wrote when they explained it
