AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Co-Director On How Much Of The Movie Takes Place On Earth And In Outer Space

Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a huge movie which brings together Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy but what sort of balance will directors Joe and Anthony Russo find between the scenes set on our planet and in outer space? The leaked trailer pointed to both factoring into the story somehow and now Joe has weighed in on exactly what sort of mixture we're getting.

Asked about how much of Avengers: Infinity War will take place on Earth with a human cast of heroes, he replied: "A good amount. It’s a lot of different narratives driving towards each other. A lot of different characters, so you have to tell a lot of story. And it’s a good mix between space and Earth."

That sounds pretty much perfect, though fans hoping for a full on space set adventure could be disappointed. There is, of course, a possibility that Avengers 4 will take the heroes into outer space and focus squarely on the time they spend there but we're going to have to wait and see for the time being.

I'm sure they're mostly saving space for Avengers 4

We don't need a full space movie because GOTG covers that base already.

@TheFamousJMC - But that's 2 space movies compared to 14 movies primarily focused on Earth. There's so much of space to cover that Guardians has only scratched the surface of. Gunn hasn't really fleshed out the intergalactic community or thoroughly explored any alien civilizations. Plus we've already seen the Avengers defend Earth twice. Moving them away from Earth will be a nice change of pace and emphasize the grander "fate of the universe" scale of this conflict.

@BIGBMH - And we'll get to space by IW2, but there are at least 2 Infinity Gems on Earth, so it is likely that, what, a third of the first movie may take place on Earth.

@BIGBMH - They've defended Earth twice because they're Earth's heroes. I don't get the obsession with bringing these characters who don't belong in space to space.

@TomSolo - Yeah, I'm not complaining about having a lot of part 1 set on Earth. Just arguing against the logic of "We don't need a full space movie because GOTG covers that base already."

@CuddlyCereal - The Avengers have been to space loads of times in the comics. Having them go beyond their world to defend it expands the scope and offers some variety so we don't feel like we're rehashing the first film with more Avengers and a more powerful invading force.

@TheFamousJMC - Isn't Captain Marvel also supposed to have a lot of space scenes?

@BIGBMH - Agreed. That would be like saying there's no reason to set a moving on Earth because the Iron Man movies have that covered.

@CuddlyCereal - Thanos doesn't want the stones just to destroy earth, he wants to destroy everything. If he's not on earth they need to go to him or take him away from earth to limit the damage caused.

@TomSolo - No, that's not how logic works. Anyway, it could be half-Earth and half-space right?

I actually hope there are some Agents of Shield references/characters in there too. This film should also be the culmination of the TV shows as well as the films. I know that's not always possible but hopefully the TV side at least gets a mention.
