Starting out in World War II, before having a quick 70 year or so run-in with the Soviets and Hyrda; Sebastian Stan's Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Bucky Barnes, has certainly been through the mill. But nowadays, Bucky is finally recuperating in Wakanda. Soon he'll be called upon by the Avengers to take part in yet another war -
Avengers: Infinity War. However, Sebastian Stan doesn’t see his character being a fully integrated member of the superhero team just yet.
The stars of the upcoming
Avengers sequel recently gathered to debut the film (about 20 to 30 minutes of it). Stan was present and was interviewed by
Hey U Guys. The actor explained multiple facets of
Infinity War's take on his character, beginning by detailing how Bucky fits in with the team.
I would say at this point he’s just trying to find his alliances again. He’s finally just got a break, you know? He’s finally been embraced in a whole new world and being looked after — sort of developing trust with people. There’s obviously a huge thing coming, a huge threat coming requiring his help so he wants to gain that trust and maintain it. So, he’s just along for the ride right now.
Stan was asked about the narrative future of his character. While he doesn't know exactly what's in store down the line, he certainly seems eager to return the role in future movies.
I know we had conversations about what potentially might happen, where he would go, and where he wouldn’t go. But, it’s just so hard to predict, you know? Because it’s just, over time, it depends on the fans. It depends on all kinds of things. But it’s been a blessing to see it come this far. And like I said, we knew we could potentially do a Winter Soldier movie, or any of those things. And so far it’s been great, so knock on wood, you know? It keeps going.
Stan's above sentiment is particularly interesting, considering what fans have been speculating about the upcoming
Avengers films. With Chris Evans departing from the franchise following
Avengers 4, many feel that Bucky is the perfect choice to take up the mantle of Captain America. As long as it makes sense narratively, Stan agrees with the prospect,
as he explained earlier this year.
Along with Bucky's return comes his somewhat iconic weapon, which he wielded as the Winter Soldier in the second Captain America film. His character, and Stan himself, was expertly proficient with the blade. Stan is, one of many people, excited to see the character's knife play return in Avengers: Infinity War.
For me, it's a treat, because I love the stuff I got to do on The Winter Soldier and Civil War. I love the stunt team, they're incredible, so talented. To work with them again was extremely special for me. Anytime I get to revisit that, I feel like it's epic. I got my knife back this time around so that was kind of nice. They allowed me to have a knife again.
