New Doctor Strange Fan Theory Disproves One Death In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

A recent fan theory about the original Doctor Strange film may provide proof that one of the characters who died in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ actually survived.

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel fans were devastated when the mighty Titan Thanos destroyed half of the universe’s population with a single life-altering snap of his fingers. Many fan favorite characters, including the cosmic wizard Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), disintegrated into dust, leaving the fate of the universe quite literally in Thanos’ fingertips. However, one Marvel fan may have discovered another trick up Doctor Strange’s sleeve.

According to a new fan theory shared on Reddit by pdgenoa, it’s possible that Doctor Strange may have survived Thanos’ snap based off of a reexamination of the first Doctor Strange film.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange uses the Time stone to view 14 million different possible outcomes of the ensuing conflict between Thanos and Earth’s mightiest heroes. Out of all of those options, Strange reveals that there is only one possible future where they are actually able to defeat Thanos. As he is turning to dust, Strange says to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), “This was the only way.” Here Strange is reassuring Tony that, even though he made this controversial decision to hand over the Time stone to Thanos, it is the one possible future where they win.

In the original Doctor Strange film, which debuted back in 2016, the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) reveals to Stephen Strange that, even with her magical abilities and clairvoyance, she could never see past the moment of her own death. With this in mind, it would then stand to reason that Doctor Strange shares these same limitations and cannot see into the future past his own death.

Since Strange was able to see their possible victory in the future, it's clear that this path would also include his survival. Using his magic, Doctor Strange could then have created the illusion that he turned to dust along with the other 50% of the population in order to operate behind the scenes out of Thanos’ radar.

While pdgenoa does make a very astute observation, one user named AsianSutu found a simple flaw in the theory. While the Ancient One was limited within her own abilities, Doctor Strange had the power of the Time stone, which may have granted him the ability to see past his own death and, unfortunately, means Strange is gone for good.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Danai Gurira, Peter Dinklage, Benedict Wong, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Chris Pratt.

Avengers: Infinity War is now playing in theaters!

Nice theory but as it points out, the time stone is a variable the ancient one did not have.

@RextheKing - Why would it not be available to her?

Kurban - 6/1/2018, 1:51 PM
@dinoSlider - It was a forbidden relic, deemed too dangerous to actually be used as it could create disastrous consequences. Strange’s usage of the stone is technically breaking the rules.

@dinoSlider - Well it probably could have been. We know she has broken the rules before, so she could have used the stone. It just the way the film imply how she does it, makes it seem as though she done it with just her own magic, not with a relic.

Very interesting theory, but The Ancient One never had the time stone though.

Good article although I take exception with the comment about Strange being gone for good. 😂

Maybe since you cant see PAST your own death, if all of those millions of possibilities he died, and knew Thanos won before he went just like it happened, except since this one possible scenario he COULD see past his own death since he will get brought back. And that's how he knew to go through with it. Interesting, but it doesn't really change what we already know.

Thanos wasn't on Titan when Strange disintegrated. Why would he need to hide it from him. He's gone with the rest.

Here was a interesting point of view review I found.

"Avengers:Infinity War. My SPOILER filled review.

Off the top.....
I liked it....
Loved it? Mmmm dunno yet...I may have to go for seconds, although the first go around is still stuck in my ribs and I'm still digesting this whale of a tale.
This was bitter sweet in the full sense of the term for me.
The bitter is that this is the end for so many heroes we have grown to dig and to
some we didn't get a full chance to fully dig. The sweet is the real fact
that Marvel (although had some strike outs in my book)
overall won in this comic book universe building movie odyssey and they deserve a well
earned thank you, standing round of applause from all quarters and a pat on the back for their Herculean efforts.
Now am I saying was this a perfect superhero film I always wanted to see from Marvel?
NOPE.
I will say that this film was probably the right thing to say (at least for me) as a great film for their 10 year mark.
Some may say this is in their top 5 Superhero films of all time.
I'm not there.

Although this movie had all the typical trappings of a Superhero movie extravaganza.
It really wasn't that for me. It was actually deeper than all that stuff.
All the new costumes and intense CGI characters bombastically colliding together
this go around really was merely sprinkles thrown aggressively (yet purposely) on a well baked purple cake.

Let me explain from my perspective. This movie goes deep. This movie is not about the sprinkles. Well baked cakes never are.

This movie actually wasn't about the "Super Heroes". This wasn't really actually a Superhero movie...AT ALL.
When it comes down to it there was only one hero in the whole film. Drum roll please..... Dr.Strange.
He save what he could. Heroes can't save everyone as we have seen.
But this was ultimately a Marvel movie about Thanos and their build up to the ultimate evil in their universe.
Their idea of Satan incarnate.😈
I specifically went to Satan of the Bible because the nature of what Thanos idealizes himself to be
by the very actions that Thanos himself articulated and actions he took.
The opening scene that we see of Thanos he makes an odd declaration that caught my attention and had me raise an eyebrow.
He speaking to Loki a false god and he has another false god forcefully kneeling beside him Thor.
Thanos says...."Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same and now 'IT'S' here...or should I say...I AM."
Now in The Bible GOD referred to HIMSELF as I AM to Moses when he asked his name Exodus 3:14 also in John 8:58
and in various other passages.
Knowing that and this being the very idea(desire) and thing said that got Satan kicked out of God's Kingdom according to the Bible...
"For thou (Lucifer AKA Satan) hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will
ascend above the heights of the clouds; I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH." Isaiah 14:13-14

Loki: [ to Thanos as he is dying] You will never be a god.

Another thing that made me raise an eyebrow was when Thanos said to Gamora (that may be another identity marker that links him to the biblical Satan)
He said...'I' NEVER TAUGHT YOU to LIE that's why you are so bad at it." You know who is good at telling lies? The FATHER of lies.John 8:44.
Another thing that points to him being the parallel evil is his sacrifice of Gamora for the Soul Gem.
The symbolism is that he gave up his last little bit of his very own soul with the sacrifice of Gamora for a false soul of power.
After this sacrifice he awakens in a pool of water like a baptism, then the complete Thanos truly begins from this point.
The Black Order themselves are like fallen angles as well being Thanos heralds always proclaiming his arrival and greatness and our
necessity to bow before him. All the things Satan desires and often gets. That said about Thanos....
He was a well thought out and well performed character in this movie. He was the "star" of this movie.
As much as I love my homey Damion Poitier (The first EVER and actually only LIVE action Thanos truly) I have to say....Josh Brolin CAME WITH IIIIIT!
Sorry D. 😘
Anyway as for the rest of the film I can nit pick till the cows come home but I won't in this...I will discuss my minor gripes with
anyone in the responses. I'm sure I may have more after another viewing.
I will reveal my over all theory though here of this event....

The ones who didn't disappear into ash are the ones who actually died.
This was like an odd reverse rapture type deal they are doing IMHO.
So ....Steve,Tony,Rhodey,Gamora,Nebula,Rocket,Okoye,Thor,maybe Loki,Vision Banner and Natasha all dead.
Also there was another nice clue that phase 4 may have a different history ahead for the MCU all together by what Dr.Strangle allowed to happen and there was a little easter egg that may have hinted to it.
When Thanos tried to crush Strange with some rubble
Strange threw it back at him as some butterflies possible hinting at the" butterfly effect" that is to happen in the MCU.

Something to speculate about.....or not. 😉
We can quibble about the filming quality and lapse in logic it
our talk back.
Thanks for reading.

Can't give this movie a number or grade yet.
Anyway...Like I said.
I liked it.😉👍

Oh yea! Wonder why they made Thanos an intergalactic environmentalist worried about overpopulation? I thought that's what the good guys were suppose to be. 🤨🤔Hmmmm.????"

I don’t think they were killed, I think they were teleported into the Soul Stone
WackyBantha
WackyBantha - 6/2/2018, 9:52 AM
I think they were all killed. And the rest of them will also die in Avengers 4. This will cause Marvel to cancel the upcoming films and also the closing of the studio.
IronJohnson
IronJohnson - 6/2/2018, 7:36 PM
Phase 4 will be more cosmic. When Thanos snapped his fingers, every civilization lost half their population. Kree, Skrulls... everyone. Gotta imagine they will all try to find out why. This will lead to all new characters on screen. Wonder who the next big baddie will be. Kang? Annihilus? Galactus? Secret Invasion or Secret Wars? Cant see where Feige will go from here but it will surely be amazing!
DoctorDoomSayer
DoctorDoomSayer - 6/14/2018, 5:07 AM
It would make the most sense for Galactus to be the big baddie of Phase 4 and beyond, dude to the fallout of the *snap* Thanos concept of balancing the universe may have actually unbalanced the universe causing a force of universal nature like Galactus to come into play.
