Red Skull Actor Reveals Unique Direction AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Helmers Gave Him To Play The Villain

Ross Marquand took on the role of the Red Skull in Infinity War and Endgame, and he's now revealed the unique direction he received from the Russo Brothers when it came to playing the iconic villain...

Hugo Weaving played the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger, but the one-time leader of HYDRA made his return in Avengers: Infinity War (with Ross Marquand taking on the role instead). Trapped on Vormir, Johann Schmidt had become a guardian of the Soul Stone, but how did the actor go about portraying this very different take on the character?

Well, it turns out that Joe and Anthony Russo had some very unique direction for him!

"[The Russo Bros.] came to me and said we want you to take Hugo's Red Skull and infuse him with a bit of Yoda," Marquand revealed during a recent interview with Nerds4Life. "He's a wise soul, he's 84 years older, and he's also an apparition. He's kind of a ghost at this point."

"He's no longer the diabolical, ambitious man that we know him as in 1944. He's a complicated anti-hero," the actor continued. "I thought that was such a fun take on him, because he's just so broken -- he's a cursed man, and I love playing that."

Over the weekend, Marquand talked about his future as the Red Skull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and made it clear that he would like to see what were to happen if the villain returned to Earth. After all, he has now been freed form Vormir, and if he can't get his hands on Steve Rogers, Bucky (or the new Cap) could very well end up in his crosshairs.

Time will tell on that front, but Marquand certainly delivered a fun new take on the Red Skull, and there are still plenty of places the character could go in this shared world moving forward.

I really enjoyed his take on Red Skull. Hope to see him again.

That’s some pretty cool insight into the character. I never thought about how much he would have changed.

You either die a villain, or live long enough to see yourself become the hero.

There is really no need to see this version of Red Skull again. I would only care to see the moment Steve returns the Soul Stone back to Vormir. Not only would we get a Cap/Red-Skull reunion, there would undoubtedly be a Steve/Natasha reunion as well; and that one would be the more treasured (in theory).

As much as I'd love for Ross to come back in the role, I think it might feel a bit awkward to continue playing an impersonation of what another actor did (even though it'd be super cool for him to keep channelling Hugo Weaving)...

Also - I don't understand the people who keep saying Red Skull's return was random or unnecessary. People have been asking for years where the hell Scotty beamed him up to.

I can only understand if people expected him to be locked up in Asgard instead (as did I). But apart from that, what they did with him in IW was cool and still made sense from what we last saw of him.

Now that the Red Skull is no longer the keeper of the Soul Stone, there’s no reason why he can’t return to Earth and cause trouble for the remaining Avengers and heroes of the MCU. Marquand did an absolutely fantastic job playing the Red Skull and not have the Red Skull return to Earth as a future villain is a completely wasted opportunity, especially since Ross Marquand was so damn good in the role! Marvel needs to bring him back in a big way because there are just too many awesome stories that involve the Red Skull and we know that most fans would be super excited to see him wreck havoc in the MCU once again.

@Archangel82 - "...there’s no reason why he can’t return to Earth and cause trouble for the remaining Avengers and heroes of the MCU."

Reason why he can't: "He's no longer the diabolical, ambitious man that we know him as in 1944. He's a complicated anti-hero,"

@LSHF -

As far as reasons go that’s a pretty good reason

@Archangel82 - I must have missed him no longer being the keeper... wouldn't that have happened between Gamora and BW... yet he was still there.

@JonC - He was "still" there bc Gamora was still alive. IW Gamora died in 2017 and Widow died when they went back to 2014.

Red Skull*hides face like Mr Sir in holes*: Steve Rogers, son of.. a bitch

I really thought we’d get a different kind of scene with them bringing red skull back. I thought for sure it’d be Steve and someone else going to Vormir. Maybe that diabolical, ambitious man would have came out once he saw Cap. Berating him for his failures and suggesting he should be the one who dies for the stone

@MyCoolYoung - That sounds like the Red Skull to me. Yes, I also thought "if" we saw him again, it would be like you said. It was an odd way to bring him back, but I was just glad to see him again. I missed him. LOL! But, seriously, I missed him.

@LSHF - lol I think we all did. I'm a fan of Cap 1 and it would've been great to see one last cap/skull scene
