Kevin Feige Pays Tribute To Stan Lee And Teases Remaining MCU Cameos: "I Thought He Would Live Forever"

In a new interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reflects on his first meeting with Stan "The Man" Lee and promises that some surprises are in store for the legendary comic creator's famous cameos.

Kevin Feige first met Stan Lee in 2000 when he was a lowly producer at Marvel and part of Fox's X-Men franchise. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel Studios President recalled hearing from "The Man" at the time and being granted a nickname in the process.

"The light on the phone was blinking and I checked the message," Feige says. "'Fearless, Feige!' he said. "'Fearless Feige, this is Stan Lee.’ It was just a voicemail, he just needed something. But I was, 'I think Stan Lee gave me a nickname.’ It was amazing.” Feige adds that he kept that message for years after it was left for him.

As for the importance of his cameos, the man behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe said he wanted to keep them going after X-Men and having the comic book creator on set was always a delight.

"It would be a holiday on
set, when he came to do this cameos. That’s how much he inspired people. Whether it was the beginning of the shoot, the middle, the end, the energy would skyrocket when he came on the set. Those are my strongest memories. And as much as we and the audience love the cameos, Stan loved and was so proud of every one."

As for future cameos, Feige said that Marvel Studios is "[thinking] about an appropriate way [to honor him]" but stayed mum on any future cameos. "One of the many things I learned from Stan was that everyone likes a surprise."

"He was a 95-year old man, I'm realistic, but he’s also Stan Lee," he concluded. "He’s a mythological legend who’s had more energy than me ever since the first day I met him. Part of me thought he would live forever."

If only, eh? Needless to say, Stan "The Man" Lee's legacy will never be forgotten.

I must have spent at least 45 minutes trying to think of a good "Stan Lee" adjective for Feige. I'll bet Stan didn't spend longer than 4.5 seconds, and his is way better than mine.

"Fearless Feige" it is.

@Equivocal - This is inaccurate.

It would've been the other way round. Stan Lee would snap his fingers and Thanos would turn to dust.

I think they can always do what the Netflix MCU does by having a picture of him in the background for different locations.

Or they could slip in "RIP STAN LEE" Easter eggs throughout their next films.

I've been setting myself up for his death for a while; it can help when the thing actually happens, which I felt would be soon. I discovered Lee helped create all those amazing characters in the mid 90s when I was a huge comic kid. I've had immense respect for him since, and that even grew more after seeing what a great, funny, charismatic man he was. I looked forward to all those MCU cameos, and I'm gonna miss them. 95 is a great age to pass on; what a life he led! He'll never be forgotten. RIP, Stan.

Another one I fear we'll hear soon is Betty White. Argh! :(

Really curious if he signed off on anything regarding his likeness rights.

@Oberlin4Prez - They would've got him to put on the mo-cap dots for Spider-man PS4.

Chances are he had already filmed a cameo for Avengers 4. If i had to guess, a wedding between Pepper Potts and Tony Stark with him in the crowd, surrounded by heroes would be a nice send-off. Hopefully the creative minds behind the MCU had the same idea.

After Avengers 4 though, i dont feel they should have obvious cameos or aspects. He's gone, and its going to be difficult enough for people to deal with that when re-watching the material he has already cameo'd in - let alone cameos, references or otherwise released after his passing.

I think his memoriam will be in Captain Marvel first no doubt, but I feel like it would be much better suited/perfect at the end of Avengers 4 instead...

Maybe they can do both.

@Kurne - I think his first in memoriam will be Into the Spider-verse.

I also suspect that he might actually be in that film in an animated role like he was in Big Hero Six.

The thing I loved about Stan Lee is how he was so above the BS. Dude still did a DC movie cameo and even all the Non MCU marvel movie cameos.

If JL was any good it would have been nice to see him in that out of respect for everything he did for comics (even if it was a poster, like vote Stan for metropolis mayor or something funny).

Dude was a true inspiration. RIP Stan

I still can't believe he's gone. Today was a day like any other and I woke up to find out we lost Stan.

I'm with Feige. I genuinely thought he would live forever just on the basis that he was Stan Lee. He was 95 with a pacemaker. I honestly thought he could've made it to a hundred.

Stan will live on in the MCU. He was a cosmic being as we learned in Guardians 2. The in universe version of him will continue to exist in the universe even if we stop seeing him in cameos.

He was quick-witted, obviously brilliantly creative, but also wildly funny. What a force.

The MCU cast should go to the Funeral as their MCU Hero/Villian. That would be the most appropriate send off/ thank you to Mr. Lee.
