AVENGERS: ENDGAME Very Nearly Featured The Marvel Cinematic Universe Debut Of The Red Hulk

General Ross became the Red Hulk in the comic books, but the writers of Avengers: Endgame have now revealed that they considered introducing a different version of the character in the movie. Check it out!

We know that The Hulk is unlikely to ever get his own solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to some complicated distribution issues with Universal Pictures, but that doesn't mean Marvel Studios can't do some interesting things with the character. For example, in Avengers: Endgame, he very nearly ended up going from green to red!

"I entertained the idea for about a day," co-writer Christopher Markus told Backstory Magazine when they asked if the moment he's exposed to the Infinity Stones and his skin burns with a reddish glow was a sign that they thought about going down that route.

"Red Hulk is a completely different thing in the comics. It wound up being, well, really we’re just saying he changes color. That’s not a character change," he explained. "If there’s a future for William Hurt as a superhero, he can turn into Red Hulk." That would be fun to see, but considering the fact that "Thunderbolt" Ross was at Tony Stark's funeral, it seems somewhat unlikely.

The Hulk has gone through many iterations in the MCU and we've seen his Savage, Planet Hulk, and Smart Hulk personas now. Do you think Red Hulk should be next?

Save him for a Thunderbolts trilogy.

I agree, Thunderbolts is where Red Hulk needs to debut. That or Dark Avengers! If the MCU is going the route of Secret Invasion, the entire "Who do you trust" scenario should force the public to not trust the appearance of the Avengers team anymore, thus making way for the Thunderbolts to take over.

Btw, Read Bendis' Dark Avengers series and man oh man I cant wait for Sentry to make his debut. That entire series was filled with great characterization.

Marvel Studios hasn't even scratched the surface of all he bonkers shit in the comics.

That's quite frankly mind bogglng because characters like Iron Man and Captain America got full arcs without going into their many issues of comics or even featuring their nemesis much if at all.

And that's after 20 plus movies. Frankly I think the MCU should become a tv series. They could do a lot more like do crazy shit like Red Hulk.

@Comicbookart - Yeah, it's kinda crazy sometimes when you stop to think about all the things a comic fan would expect to see one day from Iron Man or Cap films that never happened: Demon in a Bottle, Cap vs Red Skull in the modern day, Iron Man vs an actual Mandarin, etc. Yet you're right; it does feel like they have complete arcs.

That being said, if I could go back and tweak an MCU film, I would make Iron Man 2 more explicitly Demon in a Bottle instead of the fictional disease killing him bit, then Iron Man 3 would be about how even after giving up alcohol, his addictive tendencies just channeled themselves into suit making and world protecting.

@DalekCraigWasson - Downey wanted to do Demon in a Bottle.

And the Mandarin storyline was being set up but in both cases studio politcs [frick]ed it up.

Despite the fact Cap never really faced off against Red Skull like he does in the comics. His trilogy is way more complete and better.

This is why I believe that in time both Downey and Evans could be replaced and we get more hard hitting and comic book faithful CBM's for the characters.

That JrJr drawing looks great! His blocky style is well suited for The Hulk.

Off topic:

TENET, any idea on the official teaser. Is it linked to Inception ?

"Time has come for a new protagonist”
"Time has come for a new kind of mission”

@Dasher91 - What if Tenet pulls an "M Night Split" and we find out it's connected to Inception at the end?

@Dasher91 - rumors that it could be linked.

Playing with similar ideas.

Apparently the new protagonist line is about John David Washington being just different from what Nolan has done before lead wise

@Dasher91 - Someone interpreted the taglines as saying that time (as an entity) is literally coming for the protagonist and it has to do with time travel.

They took a pass on having Adam Warlock and the Living Tribunal why would they squeeze Red Hulk I’m there?

These writers are idiots who very likely have seen none of the MCU outside of what they worked on. They seem to despise Thor given how they treated him and they always reset characters with each new work they are given. Everything they suggested has contradicted or directly opposed what was written to the extent that i am beginning to suspect that the success of Winter Soldier was due to re-writes or a stolen script

These are also the writers who decided to tease the 'Bucky Cap' aspect only to ignore that and give it to Falcon then state they were never planning to give it to Bucky despite verbal and visual development.

@Scarilian - I see you’re still angry per usual. What verbal / visual development was there about Bucky?
Tonic24k

@Scarilian - Ha. Yeah they’re such idiots. All this success they’ve had...fvcking fools.

Do you even know who you’re talking about? I mean, you can’t even say for sure you know if they’ve seen all the MCU movies themselves. You’re just basing your complaints on pessimistic guesswork.

You must get enjoyment out of complaining.

After what they’ve down to Hulk in Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, glad they didn’t include him

@JohnnyTBP -
They really messed up Hulk.

Infinity War, at one stage, seemed like it would be Bruce finally proving himself to Hulk ending with the epic 'Hulk bursting out of Hulkbuster'... but they scrapped that idea to make him a wuss for comedic purposes.

Then Endgame confirmed the Hulk personality is gone and they made Bruce even more of a failure than before.

Don't think they want more toxic masculinity after they just got rid of most of it with what they did to Hulk , Thor , Cap and IM .

Provided Dr Banner is out of the picture on a cosmic mission, probably related to a radiation threat of some kind, it would be cool to see a Hulk villain come out of hiding only to be answered by a "GI Joe Hulk" courtesy of the general who is forced to follow in Banner's footsteps because no one else qualifies for the job. And then the military decides they don't like him any more and he has to answer the same questions Bruce used to struggle with. I think it has great potential.

First bring in Shulkie, then bring back the Leader, then bring in the MPD Hulksonalities and Dr Samson, then bring in the C Squad.

Then a minor appearance by Todd Ziller, the ultimate long term goal.

Sorry, but these writers wrote (and the directors shown) specifically in Endgame that Hulk is gone completely. They destroyed that character. He's not coming back without them retconning events of Endgame.

Get Hulk and his Professor personality right, MCU, before you try to make your own take on this character. And let's be honest:
The Red Hulk storyline was really a low point in the Hulk's published history.

Hulk is gone. Endgame confirmed this. They wasted that character, despite claiming that Thor 3, Infinity War and Endgame were a 'Hulk Trilogy' and finale to that storyline.
