In an exclusive interview with Fandango, Director Joe Russo has revealed some new information about his and his brother's approach to handling so many characters in such a large ensemble film. First and foremost, Joe once again attested to the fact that Infinity War is centered around Thanos and is very much a Thanos-driven film. When asked which characters were invested in most in the film in terms of screen time, he had this to say:
"Interestingly enough, I'll start out by saying Thanos, even though he's not a character that had a huge preexisting story in the Marvel universe. He was a threat but he was not developed in any way up to this point. Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time in this film, in a lot of ways I would say it's his movie. Our job when we make these films — and what we feel is important to us — is to surprise the audience. We wanted to tell a story that they weren't expecting, and the story is told from the point of view of a villain, which I think is also really unique and risky for a commercial film that will surprise the audience. I think this is a market where the audience really enjoys innovation and disruption, and we want to do something innovative in this space. So I think Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time."
Its great to see a set of directors giving so much focus to the villain, something that you don't see too often in films, let alone comic book films. It really shows how much they are trying to develop and flesh out Thanos, to provide the largest impact with the audiences and to make him a villain to truly remember. In addition to the mad Titan, Joe Russo had this to say about Pointbreak, which may excite some fans of our favorite Asgardian:
"I think you'll find that Thor has a really interesting arc in the film. He hasn't been at the forefront of other Avengers movies but he certainly has a very important role in this film. So I'll say, Thanos and Thor."
So there you have it folks! Thanos and Thor are, according to Joe, the two characters with the most screen time. It will be very interesting to see how the Russos handle Thor in this film, considering he is one of two Avengers that we have yet to see them direct on the big screen. But if Joe's response is anything to go by, this means that Thor will continue to receive the spotlight after his rebirth of sorts in Thor: Ragnarok.
