CONFIRMED: The Avengers To Film Outer-Space Scenes At NASA Facility

It's been confirmed that The Avengers will film at The Plum Brook Station in Ohio, a facility which can recreate Anti-Grav, outer-space environments..

The Cleveland media have been able to confirm what OLV reported don back in April. It appears(not too unsurprisingly) that Joss Whedon will be using the Ohio based station to film some space fairing scenes for The Avengers.

From OLV..

Apparently, the NASA facility has a feature of particular interest to filmmakers: A vacuum chamber that can recreate the cold and airlessness of outer space. Reportedly, this is one of the reasons why Plum Brook was chosen as a filming location

Now at this point I think we all know, even though it hasn't been officially confirmed, that the team will be facing some kind of Extra Terrestrial threat in the movie. So the fact that Outer-Space scenes are being shot isn't really surprising. But what scenes in particular? And will we see any of Earth's Mightiest Heroes themselves take to the stars? Guess we will have to wait and see which actors(if any) are spied on set. Apparently more details on what will be filmed will be released soon. The scenes are scheduled to shoot at Plum Brook Station in August.

Hate to put a damper on things but it could be Thor filming scenes stuck in space after being launced from the Bifrost Gate...or Red Skull stuck in space.

I hope it is something to do with the Kree and Skrulls though. That would be awesome!

Does NASA have anti-gravity chambers to train astronauts and conduct experiments? In short, the answer is, "No." However, read on...

NASA uses a variety of facilities to create or simulate microgravity conditions:

The most "famous" way is by aircraft flying in parabolic arcs to create microgravity for tests and simulations. NASA JSC has the KC-135 → ("Vomit Comet"). It makes several trips each year to NASA Glenn in support of ground-based microgravity research. It was also used to shoot the weightless scenes in the movie "Apollo 13."

The facilities most-likely to be misconstrued as "anti-gravity chambers," are drop towers.

Although not true microgravity facilities, astronaut training for missions requiring space walks are conducted in simulated weightless environments in neutral buoyancy facilities. These are large water tanks in which people and objects are weighted to be made neutrally buoyant, neither rising or sinking

I don't understand ... why do they need to simulate an airless environment? It seems like that is unnecessary for a movie and they can't do "anti-gravity" in a facility,, though they can use planes to simulate weightlessness.

Coll story though.

Odd that absolute zero and airlessness would be something you'd want access to, as neither condition can usually be seen. Still, there are cool things that they've done with both on Mythbusters, so maybe they have something funky in mind.
