Did Drew Pearce Reveal Joss Whedon as the Director of THE AVENGERS 3?

If a comment from screenwriter Drew Pearce during a recent interview is to be believed, Whedon might already be set to return for the third installment of THE AVENGERS, possibly as both a writer and director. Hit the jump for more.

During an interview with Movies.com in which he discusses Marvel’s creative process and the Easter Eggs hidden in his Iron Man 3 short, All Hail the King, Pearce casually mentions that Whedon is on board for Avengers 2 (which we know) and Avengers 3 (which we’ve only speculated about). Here’s the quote:

Movies.com: Will we see some aftermath of this short at some point, either in the cinematic universe or Netflix or any of the other crazy things Marvel is cooking up?

Drew Pearce: Honestly, it’s a question above my pay grade. One of the things when you’re a writer or director in the Marvel universe is you come in, you leave some tasty morsels dangling at the end, and maybe you’re the one who comes in and picks them up again next time, or maybe it’s someone else, or maybe they just hang there awhile and that’s fine too.

Despite any cliffhanger-ness to the short, I also don’t feel like it’s unsatisfying. That’s all you can really hope to do. Unless you’re Joss [Whedon] and you’re making Avengers 2 and 3, and then you have a pretty good idea if you’re making the next one or not.

Hard to tell until we get an official word one way or the other. It would certainly make sense to keep Whedon in house, if only for story consistency. The Avengers: Age of Ultron might already be too big to fail, so keeping Whedon involved is about as low a risk as you can take. Only time will tell.

If this is true, he'll be the only director/writer to helm a full trilogy in the MCU.

Hmm...I wonder if he'll actually take the job. Directing such a huge movie, that literally the whole world is watching and waiting for would be incredibly stressful.

After RDJ signed on for Avengers 2 & 3 but no Iron Man sequels, I said that Avengers 2 & 3 were going to film simultaneously and I'm still betting I'm right. That would also go to explain why they are bringing in so many Avengers and I bet they're not done.

The general public loved IM3, few pissy fanboys means nothing to the bottom-line...

In fact, Whedon said Iron Man 3 was so great, and that it was so intimidating (This is around the time he first started drafting AOU), after seeing the third act, he was scared to finish A2...

@NPaMusic ...SMH... This is not news because we're just assuming something that's been widely assumed; it's not confirmation in no way shape or form. No one has ever said or even implied that Whedon is not returning. If these comments were coming from Kevin Feige, then I guess I would understand. However, Whedon's current contract isn't even up yet, but it's still safe to assume he will renegotiate.

Please, yes... Also, let Whedon have more input on the Phase Three scripts - he couldn't really do much on IM3 because that script was being written while he was filming Avengers, same with Thor - also, both films were being written before he signed on as Marvel's consultant. Give him a bigger deal, like, RDJ money.
