The Avengers is a movie that I never imagined would get made. In fact, even now that I know who’ll be playing Captain America and Thor alongside Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, I still find it hard to picture those three heroes standing side-by-side in one movie! There’s no doubt in my mind though that it will be an amazing movie and if seeing Iron Man and War Machine fighting alongside one another had me as excited as I was while watching Iron Man 2, I’ll probably end up having a heart attack while watching The Avengers! (but at least I’ll die happy..!) Regardless, I got to thinking recently about what I’d actually like to see in the movie. So I made this list. It was difficult to write only ten things and in all honesty, I’d probably enjoy the movie just as much if only one, or even none, of these things were featured because I know that for every one item I’ve listed here there’s another 100 that would be just as amazing to see on the big screen! Anyway, take a look at the list below and let me know what you think in the usual place!
10. Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel
As I said in my latest editorial -
Why Yvonne Strahovski Is Perfect For The Role Of Ms. Marvel! -
The Avengers is the perfect opportunity for Marvel Studios to bring Carol Danvers to the big screen. Despite her 616 background with the CIA and NASA, they could easily introduce her as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent instead (as they have in the Ultimate universe) and then expand her role in future movies by giving her powers in a similar way to the comic books, via the explosion of a Kree device, which would be perfect if Marvel are indeed building towards adapting the Kree/Skrull war.
9. Tony Stark Receives Training From Captain America
It may seem insignificant but this is a classic scene that I think would fit perfectly in
The Avengers. Unfortunately, I was unable to find an image of the scene but in case you didn’t know it originally took place during the Demon in a Bottle storyline. Tony Stark asks for and receives hand-to-hand fight training from Captain America after stepping down as leader of the Avengers. Now, it’s not the latter I want to see but I think that having Steve and Tony share a scene like this would be the perfect way to develop the friendship and respect that the two have in the comic books.
8. Jarvis
Many fans were left annoyed and upset that Jarvis was turned into a computer in
Iron Man but it’s not really something that bothered me all that much. However, I have to admit to being fond of the character and so it would be nice to see him featured in
The Avengers in some way. During flashbacks to a teenage Tony Stark in
Iron Man 2: Public Identity it’s revealed that the family did indeed have a butler named Jarvis and although the events of this comic book series are unlikely to have much of an impact on the movies, the fact that it was written by
Iron Man 2 scriptwriter Justin Theroux shows that the idea of a human incarnation may be floating around somewhere at Marvel Studios! Despite that, I just think it would be great to see Jarvis surrounded by the larger than life superheroes and the relationships he later forms with them develop on the big screen!
7. Avengers vs. Hulk/Loki
In the first issue of
The Avengers comic book, Loki tricks the Hulk into fighting the team until they see through the ruse and unite to defeat the God of Mischief. That’s the short version of what happens and basically what I want to see in the movie. Seeing the Avengers take on the Hulk would make for an amazing visual spectacle and to then see him team up with them to fight Loki in one final, huge battle would be even more epic. Obviously we’ll have to wait until
Thor to see what kind of powers he’ll have and whether it would make sense for them to go in this direction as well as waiting to see what villains
The First Avenger: Captain America might introduce that could effect the events of
The Avengers. However, in my opinion this is the perfect direction for the first movie to go in.
6. More Easter Eggs!
I noticed the majority of the easter eggs in
Iron Man 2 but there have been many more pointed out on this site since, the majority of which were pretty well hidden and obscure.
The Avengers is the perfect opportunity to do the same again. Just picture Nick Fury talking about international superheroes and making references to Wakanda or Captain Britain, catching a glimpse of a partially built Ultron in Hank Pym’s lab or the countless cameos and references that could be made about characters who could feature in future movies. The possibilities are endless.
5. Avengers Mansion
There are plenty of bases that they could choose to use in
The Avengers - The Hydro Base, Stark Tower, The Helicarrier and The Triskelion are just a few of these. However, it’s the classic home of the team that I most want to see. In fact, in the recent
Iron Man 2: Public Identity comic book series that ties into movie continuity, a mansion is seen although it’s not clear whether this is the New York one. Regardless, there are many story telling opportunities that go hand in hand with using this base and it would be ideal in the respect that if Captain America, Iron Man or any of the other Avengers they may introduce are all living there they could then easily cameo in each other’s movies in future!
4. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
After spotting the news in a film magazine that he had met with Marvel about playing Hawkeye, I posted the story right away (making CBM the first place online to get the scoop!) and was astonished by the positive response the news received. Up until that point, Jensen Ackles and Chris Pine had been the top choices of many people but after watching
The Hurt Locker I could fully understand why people had changed their mind to support Renner. The guy is perfect for this role and his Oscar nominated performance in that movie was more than enough to convince me that he has all of the right qualities to really do Clint Barton justice. As for the character himself, I don’t mind how they choose to introduce him or how big his role is but I’d at least like to see him set up for a bigger part in the second Avengers movie if he ends up only being a S.H.I.E.L.D agent in this one. Hopefully though, we’ll get to see him and his trademark bow fighting alongside the team at some point!
3. Agent Coulson is a Skrull?
There are plenty of well known S.H.I.E.L.D agents that
Iron Man could have introduced but instead they created a new one which gives them a lot more leeway with what they can do with him. Coulson has so far had a lot of involvement with Tony Stark and with the news that he’ll have an even bigger role in
Thor, the character is inserting himself quite heavily into the heroes lives. There’s nothing all that unusual about that I know but just picture this. After the credits of
The Avengers, Coulson is seen in shadow talking on a mysterious looking device taking orders from someone only to step out of the dark in his Skrull form to turn back into Coulson! A huge twist and a perfect way to set up the alien race in preparation for a sequel!
2. Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne
This is essential. If they decide to introduce Hawkeye and include him and Black Widow in the team, that’s fine but it doesn’t make for all that much of an interesting line-up having those two alongside the big three. The inclusion of Ant-Man and the Wasp would not only make for some interesting story possibilities but also some particularly stunning scenes! (just imagine Giant Man fighting Hulk In the streets of NY as he does in the first volume of
The Ultimates!) Not having them would be a huge disappointment to fans - after all, they’re two of the original founding members! For anyone who thinks it would be too much hassle to try to introduce them here, just take a look at how
The Ultimates did it. Two S.H.I.E.L.D scientists drafted into the team by Nick Fury. A simple scene that could be handled in minutes! Their origins wouldn’t have to be ignored either as the solo
Ant-Man film which is being planned is the best place to go into their early history together.
1. "Avengers Assemble!"
Pretty self explanatory this one because what sort of comic book fan wouldn’t want to hear this said at some point during the movie? And I’m not talking about Tony Stark sarcastically mumbling it or Nick Fury using it to call the team into action. I want to see one of the core Avengers in the midst of battle, regardless of what foe they end up facing, rising up to give off the iconic battle cry! If that happens, it might just be the greatest moment in movie history for this particular comic book fan.
'Nuff said.
So they’re the things that I most want to see in
The Avengers! Some of them may already be things we've talked about here on CBM but I hope that there are one or two ideas here that you might not have yet considered! Thanks for taking the time to read and have your say about what you think about my choices and what you’d like to see in the movie below!
