In the following discussion, I will use comparisons of the previous major films, and I will see if all the facts can lead to The Avengers receiving an Oscar Nomination for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Writing (Original Screenplay), Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

Best Picture
Ok, I’ll get right to the point… For those who have seen The Avengers, the likely hood of this happening is slim to none, since most if not all CBM’s have never been nominated for an award, yet receive one. So, even if the reviews from both the public/critics do show potential, and it does break Box Office records, the likely hood of it happening is far from it. Since we have yet to see the rest of this upcoming Summer blockbuster movies.

Plain and simple, The Oscar Judges decided that while a movie can do really great, and succeed financially, they just don’t consider that Comic Book Movies let alone anything Sci-Fi like Avatar, or Star Wars deserves the rewards of an Oscar.

Results: Not Good

Best Director

What I said in the above for my opinion on Best Picture, is the simply the same for Best Director. While Joss Whedon has made a tremendous achievement in making The Avengers successful, I doubt that the judges will view this the same way. Reasons? First, there has only been one director in the past decade that has gotten nominated for such a big hit.

That was James Cameron for his movie Avatar, and while he deserved if for having such a visual epic title, he was turned down the reward to a film that shows bomb technicians serving in Iraq. While The Hurt Locker was a good movie, it didn’t get the same feelings or attention that Avatar received.

So plane and simple…

Results: Not Good

Best Actor/Actress

If one of the major actors or actresses from The Avengers does get picked… it will probably be Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson), since the main 5 (Thor- Chris Hemsworth, Cap-Chris Evans, Iron Man- Robert Downy Jr. ,Hulk- Mark Ruffalo, Loki- Tom Hiddleston) do their jobs perfectly, that picking one out of the five will be hard enough for fans to accept. Since choosing one character will anger fans of another.

But what about the actresses? I would say that if The Avengers is nominated, than Scarlett Johansson would be the one who is picked for playing The Black Widow. Since she has made a tremendous effort in the past when staring in Iron Man 2, and for playing a main character in the Avengers team.

So…

Big 5 being announced: Slim
Samuel Jackson announced: Good
Scarlett Johansson announced: Good

Best Supporting Actor/Actress

Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) VS Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is the competition for Best Supporting Actor if The Avengers gets a nomination. Why? Both are very deserving for their hard work in previous marvel films, and are the only two characters that fit the “Supporting Actor” role.

However, for Best Supporting Actress, I would say that Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) or Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) will be the best for the film. Though both play small roles, and are the only two major supporting actresses in the film, their roles are small, yet important when paired with the team.

So…
Clark Gregg announced: Good
Jeremy Renner announced: Good
Cobie Smulders announced: Good
Gwyneth Paltrow announced: Good

Best Writing (Original Screenplay)

Looking at how The Avengers was written in terms of story, this may be the only category that is announced as an Oscar Nominee. Why? There has never been this many main characters in a CBM film, each having their own moment, and yet being part of a team that has a complete storyline of its own.

So who would get the credit for Best Original Screenplay? It will be a battle of sorts between Zak Penn, and Joss Whedon, since both had major contributing factors to the story’s success. Though I am rooting for Joss, I’m not holding my breath, so neither should you.

Joss Whedon announced: Very Good
Zak Penn announced: Very Good

Best Film Editing

This category has a slim chance of having The Avengers being announced in it, yet, it could very well happen, since the film was shown at a pace that was at a medium speed, and the story was overall shown.
So chances of it happening? – Good

Best Visual Effects

Now to the nitty gritty subject. Without the aliens invading, and the special visual effects of the film, there would be no Avengers film. Plain and simple. With The Dark Knight and Iron Man getting nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards in 2009, the chances of The Avengers getting nominated is very high.

Take the above with a grain of salt, since this is just theories of what could happen. We’ll just have to wait until all the movies this year are shown, before we can truly tell if The Avengers will at least get nominated. But in the meantime if The Avengers did get nominated… Which one would you want it to be nominated for?

I would be cool if Avengers got an oscar but I highly doubt it. Really really doubt it. If any cbm was going to receive an Oscar we all know that would be The Dark Knight Rises but even that's unlikely, though severelly less unlikely than Avengers.

Sam Jackson and Scarlett's would be considered as supporting.

Colbie and Paltrow did almost nothing in the film and neither were could enough for an MTV award let alone an Oscar

It is an adapted screenplay not an original one. It's adapted from the comics and from the solo films. And even then it's not Oscar calibre writing in any way.

The editing was nothing special

It has a great chance for visual effects

I'm in no way a nolanite and I genuinely really enjoyed the avengers but these predictions are ridiculous

Tom Hiddleston would be my pick for who should get a nomination. He's a phenomenal actor. The Avengers should be a lock for a nomination to Best VFX. It won't win because everything will be going to The Hobbit and TDKR, not because they're better or more deserving, but because those are more Academy movies than the Avengers is. I think it should get adapted screenplay, not original. It was based off characters from comics, and was a sequel in a way, so it could be nominated for adapted screenplay, but not original.

This movie is not getting any Oscar nods unless it is best special effects. The Dark Knight Rises has the best chance of getting a nod because it is more psychological and makes you think when the Avengers is pure fun and entertainment.

The Dark Knight Rises is the only one.

Avengers - Visual Effects. Nothing more.
Spiderman - Visual Effects, probably more.
Ghost Rider - ?

serious question here.

i feel like magneto might be the only potential Oscar award winning character if played extremely well in a solo film.

is there any other marvel character that might have that potential?

and who else in dc do you guys think has academy potential?

Is slim worse than not good or vice versa?

@Alexandre: Characters don't recieve Oscars. Actors recieve Oscars. An actor playing Squirrel Girl could win an Oscar if she was phenomenal. Anyways, to answer your question, The Joker has (in your words) already one an Oscar.

Best Picture-Probably not but it could recieve a nomination. After all, Avatar was nominated, but Avatar wasn't filled with humor.

Best Director-I thought it was really well directed although I'm not that knowledgable in what to look for in award winning directing.

Best Actor/Actress or Suporting Actor/Actress-Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr. were the the acting highlights of the film; however, I'm not sure any of them were Oscar worthy. I would just roll my eyes if Samuel L. Jackson won. He is a good actor, but he isn't a great actor.

Best Writing-No

Best Film Editing-I don't know.

Best Visual Effects- I really do think it will be nominated for this. It holds a good chance of winning this, actually.

@golden123

yes i know that but there are some characters that have that complexity and were written so well and the only thing they need is someone to play them and if played even slightly well they have the potential to atleast get nominated.

some of these characters are magnificent they only need the same respect put into them by the actor playing them.

magneto i think is one of those characters and obviously the joker is one to but lets throw out some more interesting names.

yes the actors do the job in the end but sometimes when the character is that greatly written, half of the work is cut out for them.

you dont think catwoman is iconic enough?

you also dont think after coming off the huge success of inception nolan hasnt established a name for himself for people to recognize? shit all they have to do is put from the director of tdk and inception and thats pretty much it.

you dont think christian bale after coming off an academy award is huge enough for people to know either?

you dont think an iconic actor like micheal cain whose been in huge cult classic hits since the 60's isnt a well known actor?

you dont think an actor as influential as gary oldman isnt going to be recognized by people after appearing in such hits as harry potter, dracula, sid vicious, and so many more?

you dont think even blind people cant recognize morgan freeman's voice and know that man has work in so many great films?

you're telling me with the exception of rdj and slj, the cast in the avengers is more well known by the general audience then that of tdkr?

The only actor in The Avengers who has a CHANCE of being nominated for ANYTHING would be Mark Ruffalo.

That being said, the chances of the film being nominated for major awards is NOT an impossibilty.

Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture in 1977.
George Lucas was nominated for Best Director.
Alec Guiness was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Steven Speilberg was nominated for Best Director for Close Encounters of the Third Kind the same year.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was nominated for Best Picture, and Speilberg was nominated for Best Director in 1981.

ET: The Extra Terresterial was nominated for Best Picture and Speilberg was nominated for Best Director in 1982.

Now granted, none of these are 'superhero' movies, but the majority are Sci-Fi Fantasy and 'Raiders' was arguably nothing more than the 'Saturday afternoon serial' format reimagined for the screen. The bottom line is, they were recognized for not only redefining the popular culture of it's day, but redefining it WELL.

And YES, this trend of nominating these type of 'blockbusters' seems to have ended in the early eighties...but as we have seen, Titanic, Avatar, Lord of the Rings (even Gladiator?) were more recent 'blockbusters that were recognized by the Academy come award time, and looking back, their scripts, storylines, directing and acting were MORE than on par with films like The Dark Knight and most recently, The Avengers (insert hate here).

We'll all see how TDKR fares,as that is a different topic. If it lives up to the hype, I'm POSITIVE the Academy will recognize it with non-technical awards. Considering 'Oscar' can now nominate up to ten movies for the top prize, it's possible Marvel and DC could very well star in the very first Academy Award 'crossover' event! I HOPE so, anyway!
