Ironman666 Reviews THE AVENGERS

My honest review of The Avengers. Minor spoilers, so do not read if you want to see the movie without knowing a single thing about the plot.

Review Opinion

I'll start this review by briefly introducting you to what I think about Joss Whedon and his works. Firefly/Serenity and Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog are masterpieces and are testimony to the fact that Joss Whedon ensures every one of his works have a complex storyline and have superb team dynamics. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan.

The team dynamics are here and they play out very well. The Avengers are misfits and they don't belong in a team. But the threat they face from Loki and the death of a certain character motivates them to fight in a team. While all this is good, what dissapointed me was the story. The story does not live up to the standards Joss has put up in his previous works. Why I say this, is because the story has a very basic play-by-numbers, stop-the-aliens direction to it. A little more complexity would not have hurt. In fact, it is because of the story that I came out dissapointed, from the theatre.

Which gets me to my other gripe, the Chitauri. They had virtually no back-story to them, and were not a formidable enough enemy to the Avengers. After so much of speculation on the internet about their identity, there was no redeeming value in the fact that we learn nothing about them in the movie, apart from the fact that they invade earth on Loki's bidding.

The fact that they're invading earth does not make you want to feel concerned about the common people who run around scared (in the climax) since The Avengers, inspite of Joss saying that people can relate to them, seem oddly 'detached' from society (excluding Thor here, of course). The fact that the World Security Council representing this society is seen only in shadows, does not help either.

Acting wise, everyone performed as they were supposed to. Robery Downey Jr. is, as always, superb as the arrogant, billionaire genius Tony Stark/Iron Man. Scarlett Johansson is awesome too, as Black Widow, with a past that she is not proud of. Her interaction with Loki does justice to her part. Jeremy Renner is good as Hawkeye, though I didn't like that most of his character's screen time is "compromised" (you'll know what I mean when you watch the movie).

Mark Ruffalo stands out as Bruce Banner/ The Hulk. The Hulk pretty much owns this movie. There is consensus on the fact that Ang Lee's Hulk was not a good movie. The Incredible Hulk tried to move away from the damag done, but there's been a mixed reaction to that version of The Hulk as well. But in this movie, all that is taken care of. The way the Hulk is introduced is easily the best part of the whole movie. Fans can rejoice in the fact that they finally got The Hulk done right.

But again, Captain America (my favourite Avenger) is under-utilized in this movie. neither he, nor his action scenes, stand out in the film. But the subtle manner in which he assumes leadership of The Avengers during the climax is commendable.

Chris Hemsworth as Thor is also amazing, his fight with The Hulk is awesome. Everything else, he does what is required of him to do. So no complaints there, but nothing to write home about either. However, how Thor comes back to earth isn't clearly explained (if anyone else understood this, do let me know).

SLJ as Nick Fury is superb. Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, the second-in-command after Fury, is great too.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki is superb. His deviant, almost childish inclination to rule over mankind is deadly. No other actor can do justice to Loki's role. But sadly, he does not have too much to do in the climax either.

The action is amazing, not overly done, but just perfect. There's a lot of witty banter among the characters, in a style typical of Joss Whedon, and that had me in splits.

The action set pieces complement the special effects really well. The CGI on The Hulk, the aliens, the giant snakes (yes, plural!!) is all extremely well done. Kudos to the special effects team.

Alan Silvestri's score is great, but you are really not listening to the background music when Hulk is smashing, are you?

In conclusion, like I said, I came out of the theatres dissapointed, mainly because of the story. I expected much more, story-wise, from Joss Whedon.

I'll go with either a 3/5 or a 6.5/10 (or at the max a 7/10) for The Avengers.

PS- As for the mid-credits scene (is there an end-credits scene too?), I think they should have made Thanos speak a sentence or two.

Loki mentions the all Father Odin had to gather up a lot of "dark matter" energy to send Thor to earth. I'm guessing after hemidell told him Loki was on earth, Odin send thor

I believe your review is spot on based on information from other articles. In an in-depth article about the issues Whedon faced in making the movie (Wired, May 2012), there was much disagreement between the story and Whedon initially. He suggested the team not work well, but Marvel demanded the villains be related to Loki. I can imagine that when cutting the film, he's going to edit the information or limit the story that was forced upon him first. So, as you say in the beginning of your article about how great Whedon is (I agree), I'll give him a semi-pass as this is not 100% Whedon development.

No, he mentions it to Thor when they're talking in the woods :)

I have to disagree with you on the point of the army has no backstory. Why do they need one? They are just one of the many forces at Thanos's hand.

@worf254

Interesting that you say Marvel demanded the villains be related to Loki, what do you mean by that?

I'd also like to point out that Thor mentions the Chitauri are from somewhere far outside the 9 releams so it's understandable not much is known about them

I agree with your review, and I think the reason I gave it an 8.5/10 is I am not familiar with any of Joss Whedon's work, so there was no let down factor in my opinion.

For me this is the ultimate turn your brain off, and watch the shit hit the fan movie. Sure the plot wasn't anything special but it didn't have to be. It did feel rushed a little bit in the middle, and how everyone galvanized around Agent Coulson was a little forced and unbelievable.

It's not a perfect, movie, but it is a fun entertaining movie, and despite its flaws it's hard not to admire the effort and passion Whedon put into it. Is it the best comic book movie ever made? Nope. Is it worth your 14 or so dollars? Hell yes. It's a very entertaining movie.

*spolers ahead*

I had great expactations, yet I loved it. I think what really needs to be taken into account is how hard it is to divide time in this movie, because there is so much happening, I think it was perfectly paced, I watched it with subtitles which I think helped me get all the details like how odin sent thor to stop loki, and such.

I also thought all the actors performed better here than in their solo movies... everyone got alot of action and everyone had good dialogue.

Would also like to point out that I love seeing more languages than english in this movie, seeing the nazis talk to each other in english was painful for me when watching captain america.

Ruffalos performance made me believe him as banner from the instance I first saw him.

Whedon also managed to pay homage to the fact that Hawkeye was a crook before joining the Avengers by having him work against them in the start.

black widow was a great spy and master interrogator. In Iron man 2 she had to share the screen only with Downey and Cheadle, but in this movie she still had way more character development, better dialogue and action.

In my honest opinion I would give the movie a 10/10
because I cannot for a second imagine how it could have been better if any other director had made it. I honestly cannot. Not Jon Favreu, not Joe Johnston for sure, not even Kenneth Branagh

Finally a down to earth review. I saw some of the movie on Veetle and I didn't like how the story felt a little shallow. I'm still going to see it on midnight opening day and maybe in costume though.

I felt there was a huge story there, that you can read yourself. The story doesn't need to be spoonfed to you but there are references to a bigger story then the one we see for me imagining Black Widow and Hawkeyes first encounter, the subtle little ways they hint at Caps difficulty to adapt to our time, Banner talking of his attempts to rid himself of the his curse in the past, It may not be story but I think there is alot of essence to the characters, which for me is what comics are all about. These characters come with a story decades long, they all come with a kind of essence to them and then you just put them in situations. Amazingly tense action packed situations.

and also cosmic stuff. I love cosmic stuff.

@Maximus like Transformers? I didn't realise it was a 2 hour explosion fest with no story or character development with clear sexist and racist undertones...

If you want great story wait until TDKR. I'm not saying this just because I like DC more its because you know Nolan will bring a great story.

Nice write up. I almost feel that your biggest issue is that you are a Whedon fan and came into the movie with some type of expectation based on the way Joss brings other characters to screen in his other series. I feel it is important to try and separate the worlds that Whedon has been involved in.

Good work on the writing, I hope you were still able to enjoy it despite your expectations!

Ahh there you are NOLANITE! I was wondering when you would come out of hiding, lol. Face it, Marvel has a mega hit on there hands and critics are in love with Avengers. When you consider what a tough task Joss had in bringing together all these actors and characters he pulled it off in spectacular fashion ;D

The general consensus around critics is they are surprised this wasn't messed up. Most that I have read say it's not perfect but it's a lot of fun and what the previous films should have been. It seems to have Iron Man syndrome with the critics. Nobody was expecting anything nearly this good, and the fact the movie wasn't just a CGI fest impressed critics more than other films.

Still it's worth checking out in the theaters, and Marvel will make a killing out of it. But nobody is hailing this as one of the best movies ever made. Well save for some hardcore comic book fanboys.

nolan did the CBM genre no favors by grounding stuff in reality; he hit the genre a crippling blow from which it may never recover. Indeed it's up to THE AVENGERS to heal that wound and get the CBM genre back on track. Most CBM franchises cannot or will not abandon their 'comicbookiness' and fantasy, nor should they. By getting the minds of the GA aligned with CBM's devoid of comicbook fantasy, nolan has made it more difficult for real comicbook superhero movies with true comicbook fantasy to achieve the highest levels of success.

Let's hope that in the battle between THE AVENGERS and tdkr that real CBM's can achieve a victory and let mundanisation go the way of the dodo.

Yeah he really gave the genre a crippling blow with his Batman Series...

I mean creating a movie that led to the Academy to expand their best picture nominations is really a detriment to cinema in general.

It's just two different styles. Nolan is great at what he does, and his films are entertaining, complex, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Joss is entertaining and fun to watch for different reasons. It's fine that it is not your "cup of tea" the more "realistic" approach to comic book movies. However, just realize you are in a gross minority when it comes to the Batman films.

Comic book movies are silly in general. Nobody outside of the hardcore fans take them seriously, and I don't blame a director who wants to make them more palatable to appeal to a wider range of audience. Sure some have failed, but some have also succeeded. These "protectors of the purity of comic books" need to wake up and realize nobody gives a shit about comics anymore. It's a dying industry, and if a director makes a few changes that the majority of the public accepts, than you just need to get over it.

@RFBD who has ever said this is the best movie ever made, certainly not me. The 'consesus' is that Marvel/Joss have made one hell of a film. Lets not kid ourselves here, a 'just good' film does not create this kind of traction with critics and the box office. 'Consesus' (there's that word again) is that Avengers is now the best CBM to date. You obviously don't agree, but that is what the majority of people who have seen it agree on.

An average of 8.4 with 283 reviews is better than an 8.1 with 60 reviews. The overall consensus isn't in, and if you take the time to read the reviews only a handful called it the best comic book movie ever. Everyone else calls it a pleasant surprise. Actually only three reviews call it the best comic book movie to date. It is what it is though Coloso, you couldn't give an unbiased perspective with anything, and I don't know why I keep taking time out of my day to explain to you how completely off your assumptions are. It's just becoming too easy.

Plus you can't have a consensus when the majority of people have seen it. But it doesn't matter because a greatest comic book movie ever list is going to be extremely subjective. However, this site tends to have a ton of Marvel fanatics (which isn't a bad thing), but of course they will say The Avengers is the greatest CBM ever.

I'm waiting for it to hit the US. Marvel did this with a couple of their previous films as well - releasing it internationally first - which builds up buzz. I don't know what to expect. I hope it's good. I doubt it's above a 7 though - cause this review really made sense unlike other reviews out there.
