Fox owns the X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights. Sony owns the Spider-Man film rights. And Marvel Studios owns basically every other Marvel character within the comic book publisher's database. Fans have discussed what it means to Marvel Studios not having the likes of Wolverine and Spider-Man available for the Avengers roster ad nauseum but what do two prominent superhero film directors think? When the question was presented to Marc Webb [via
Collider], here's what he had to say. "Wolverine, Iron Man, those would be pretty fantastic. The thing is, you set up certain rules in the universe, about what people are aware of, our universe...[Fox] built a history about mutants which does not coalesce with our world. That presents a lot of difficulties and a lot of challenges that would be hard to overcome," said Webb about the prospect of adding character belonging to other film studios to the Spider-Man fictional film world.
When the same question was presented to Joss Whedon, he acknowledged the same problem raised by Webb but says he can figure it out as working within parameters is what he does best. Said Whedon [via
CBR], " I mean, yeah. You give me the parameters and I work with them. I have so many actors, I have so many characters to service that it's not like I'm like, "Well this won't work unless I have Spider-Man and Wolverine!" I'm just making my movie. Yeah, it's cool to think about stuff like that and if we reached an era where those studios could cooperate on that level I think that would be super dope. Whenever you see somebody crossing over to something it gives it pop. Like "Muder She Wrote" and "Magnum [P.I.]" -- great crossover. I got excited."
So now I turn it over to you, the fans. If film rights returning to Marvel Studios and rebooting is not an option, how do you shoehorn existing X-Men and Spider-Man continuity into the very well established canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
