Speculation that Sam Wilson/Falcon would take flight in Joss Whedon’s anticipated follow-up to The Avengers wasn’t initially fueled when Anthony Mackie joined Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was actually when Marvel announced a new animated Avengers Assemble series “designed to reflect the movie,” revealing Falcon as the newest member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
However, since then, besides the casting of Mackie, there has been no further indication of our speculation coming to fruition; sort of until today. During a recent interview with The Root, Anthony Mackie was inquired about his preparation for The Winter Soldier. Before getting to the question, the site reminded the actor, “In the upcoming The Avengers 2 and Captain America sequel, you’ll play the Falcon.” And in response to the question, “How are you preparing?” Mackie failed to correct the interviewer that it’s just the Captain America sequel he’ll take part in.
“I’ve actually become a gym rat again,” the actor said preferably, continuing, “But instead of getting bigger -- because the Falcon was written as a man who was 6 foot 4 and 230 pounds; he was massive -- mine is a different take on who he is, as opposed to being specific to the comic book, like all of the Marvel movies. You’ll definitely get your Falcon fix, and I will look amazing!”
Deeper into the Q&A, the interviewer mentioned The Avengers more directly, this time suggesting that Mackie's description of his recent film, The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete, “sounds like a far cry from the inevitable big-budget push of a blockbuster such as The Avengers...ready for the media blitz that movie will get?” Without correcting The Root yet again, Mackie went on to respond discussing the film industry, his anonymity and modest approach to acting jobs.
Could we be reading too much into things and letting our fanboy-ambitions get the best of us? Of course. However, it is still very much possible and likely that Anthony Mackie will reprise The Falcon role as the newest member of The Avengers’ cinematic team - especially considering credible sources reported that ‘Crossbones’ actor Frank Grillo will do the same. What do you think?
