SDCC '11: Joss Whedon On The Avengers

Joss Whedon briefly spoke on The Avengers at Comic-Con. No new details emerged about the movie but Whedon did state that it's not as hard as he thought it would be. He also spoke on a Serenity sequel, writing comics for Marvel, and the new Buffy/Angel comics at IDW.

Joss Whedon appeared at a Comic-Con panel to wild cheers and applause Saturday afternoon. Whedon didn't offer much in the way of news but he did heap praise on the star studded cast.

As reported by HeroComplex:

“What I find is that these characters mesh through these differences really well,” he told the capacity crowd at the Hilton Bayfront’s Indigo Ballroom. “And what I also find is these actors have a great time playing against each other, and they are, as a troop, actually a much better team than the Avengers are.”

He said working on “Avengers” has been easier than he expected. “In fact, the only problem I’ve had with ‘The Avengers’ is: Where is the 14-year-old girl with superpowers?” he joked.

According to the live blog from The Fannish Inquisition Whedon described the whole process as "not as hard as he thought it would be".

Most of the panel was devoted to discussing the upcoming Angel, Faith, and Buffy comics with IDW. One intriguing tidbit that did emerge was the fact that Whedon stated that he's trying to get a sequel to Serenity greenlit but no studio is biting. Whedon went on to say that he has no plans at the moment to return to writing comics for Marvel, he has no plans to write a Star Trek comic, and cracked a joke that his next project will be rebooting the Spider-Man franchise in a year.

Marvel, The Avengers

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It was announced in April 2005 and is based upon the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans. The Avengers is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2012, in 3D.

Serenity/Firefly needs to be back on the air, whether as a TV series or another movie, though perferably, I'd ask for the TV series again, if only a few characters didn't die.

Joss, if your reading this, we the fans want this movie to be the greatest thing ever. We want you to blow our minds and completely rape our eyes. Even by some chance this movie is dumber than Green Lantern, then we'll still show some happiness because OUR heros, OUR favorite heros are taking the stage together for the first time. Bring us to the next step in the Comic Book Movie Genre!

@ThreeBigTacos - If this is dumber than Green Lantern I'm not showing any happiness, only anger for blowing the best chance you ever had that bad.

hmmm...that CAN be taken as him being a bit over confident. i mean, it's one thing if Whedon has had unbeatable track records in making hit movies, like JJ Abrams, but, so far all he got that's worth anything are the Buffy tv series (the movie flopped), his writing run on Astonishing X-Men and co-writing the original Toy Story. Firefly/Serenity..while the movie and tv series might have a cult following, they're not exactly success stories.

but, as a fanboy himself, i'm SURE Whedon won't say or do anything carelessly STOOPID, cuz he knows there'll be repercussions... ha ha ha ha [evil laugh]

in all seriousness, though, as a huge part of fandom AND a professional entertainment member, i know Whedon knows what he's doing and will not disappoint, cuz if the movie stinks, he'll be the first one to go NUTZ...especially with himself.
