SDCC '11: Joss Whedon Speaks On The Avengers' Filming Progress And More!

Now dishing more the progress of filming for Marvel's The Avengers and the essential parts among other things, make the jump & check out what director Joss Whedon says!

Chatting with Techland at the San Diego Comic-Con, the director of next summer's highly-anticipated superhero ensemble The Avengers, discussed the essential aspects of filming, and the production's progress.

"We're about 2/3 of the way through shooting, and I live somehow to tell this. I think it's coming along really well. I have yet to make it more than the sum of its parts, but I'm really excited about the parts."

"It's getting two characters together who have never talked, and never even been in the same universe. It's the little moments between them. I mean, there is so much action in this movie, I'm appalled that I wrote it, because apparently I have to film it. But it's the little moments between the characters, where you really get to feel both of their voices, and their different perspectives. That's thrilling."

Primary filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has wrapped with the remainder of shooting moving on-location in several areas of Cleveland, Ohio; including the NASA facility. And it's been said the shoot will mainly consist of action sequences.

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig), the film releases worldwide May 4, 2012!

Joss Whedon has to make sure to make Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk have equal screen time because they each have problems that need to be solved. Cap has the fact that he just lost everybody close to him. Thor thinks he lost his brother. Hulk can't control his powers and probably feels every body fears him. Iron Man well I don't know but he just needs screen time cause he's awesome.

I'm so jazzed for this now that Captain America has shown how all of the various story lines have woven together, starting with Iron Man 2. That mysterious element that Howard Stark knew about but couldn't create himself? He mapped it out from studying the Cosmic Cube and Zola's weaponry. We learned in the Thor post-credit scene that the Allies (and SHIELD) never managed to tap into the cube, and SHIELD has apparently been trying to do so for 70 years now.

It kind of make the whole "Tony gets sick and has to recreate this mystery element to survive" subplot seem kind of sinister now, doesn't it? It looks like he came upon that radiation poisoning honestly enough, but SHIELD definitely jumped at the chance to have him solve part of their puzzle in order to cure himself.

So Thor's people made the cube, Cap fought for it and Tony's armor is now powered by a derivative of it. I can't wait to see what happens when either SHIELD or Loki end up using it in Avengers.

As much as I want this movie to be good it cannot be.Joss Whedon sucks, this is the guy responsible for dogshit like dollhouse.....he will [frick] this up. Good going Marvel choose someone who sucks as bad as Bret Ratner and hand him the Avengers.

Hey does anyone know what Loki is holding in the trailer?

I took this screencap and can't figure it out. Certainly isn't the cosmic cube.

"Thor thinks he lost his brother."

I dont' think that is really a major issue that needs a lot of time, if any. Add in the fact Loki is in the movie as a villain, so not a major thing to me.

Cyclism@ Whedon only directed one of the finest ensemble cast shows ever...Firefly was a masterpiece of taking very unique personalties that were often at odds with each other, yet still blended them together as a well-functioning team to accomplish a much higher purpose. I am not the least bit concerned about Whedon. You are entitled to your opinion.

@ranger14 trust me I know they will address the problems each character has but I just hope they each get enough screen time.
THORION76

i love it, i just saw Captain America and i almost cried twice. I saw Thor tonight and it was even better the second time. Cap and Thor destroy everything else. MARVEL F@#K YEAH.

@Alex...it looks like he's holding his staff. Possibly with the cosmic cube in it.

Maculis - 7/23/2011, 8:41 PM
@Thorion...IDK, for some reason, I can't get into thor. I seen it three times hoping it would get better and it got worse for me. Did you notice how absolutely believable it was that Cap and Peggy fell in love? well it was just the opposite for with Thor and Jane. In fact, it made little sense that they even liked eachother.

dahamma - 7/23/2011, 8:46 PM
@Maculis, I agree on the romance bit, but other than Thor I think was the best CBM this year. Just saw cap it was a really solid movie. Chris Evans really surprised me
ThreeBigTacos
ThreeBigTacos - 7/23/2011, 8:49 PM
@AlexLaChiusa: my theory is that it's an mini arc reactor, that is keeping loki from using his powers to escape easily (like when he's riding on that truck or whatever that is, when he can easily transport himself like we saw after Thor was interrogated.) It's probably how the SHIELD agents caught him, unless it was part of his plan to get caugh ... dun dun dunnnnn.
Maculis
Maculis - 7/23/2011, 8:49 PM
@Hamma...Totally agree. To me, it had a bit of an Indiana Jones appeal. and I loved Indy. Evans did such a good job. Hugo killed. Tommy Lee was great. I really didn't feel like anyone wasn't great. Again, back to thor; I thought the entire warriors three SUCKED!
Maculis
Maculis - 7/23/2011, 8:51 PM
@3...I don't think there's any question Loki intended to get caught. This may even piss Thor off. Because he may feel like "who do humans think they are to imprison a God"

Marvel's got themselves well established at this point.DC is a distant second, which means this is a good opportunity for other smaller publisher's to step up like Dark Horse did with Hellboy.
I think Dynamite's Vampirella has a good shot at being made into a decent movie.

Those are some pretty big time actors and they're going to demand a certain amount of screen time. I see this movie clocking in at at least 2.5 hours. Personally, I would be willing to sit through 3.5 hours!
