Stellan Skarsgard To Reprise His Thor Role In The Avengers!

In an interview with a Swedish newspaper, the actor has apparently let it slip that he will be back in The Avengers as Doctor Selvig! Hit the jump for details...

A user over on the Whedonesque boards has posted a rough translation of a story in a Swedish newspaper where it was revealed that the Thor star will reprise his role in the Joss Whedon directed epic, The Avengers!

"The Avengers" is the dream team of superheroes, a group consisting of among others Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America and Thor. The film is planned to premier in 3D in May of next year. Stellan Skarsgård confirms to TT Spektra that he will play the same role as in the upcoming "Thor": Doctor Selvig. Not much is yet known about the character apart from that Selvig is a scientist in New Mexico.

The most interesting thing about this news is why exactly his character will return in the upcoming superhero team-up. Everything we've heard so far has pointed to Loki being the (or one of the) villains in the movie, so perhaps his character will have something to do with that? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

SPOILER WARNING for Thor Movie: Highlight To read

Remember that Thor & Loki during battle destroys the rainbow bridge, therefore ruining their abilities to warp jump across the universe and back (temporarily at least). Jane Foster, Dr. Selvig, and SHIELD collaborating with her research and SHIELD's resources help reconstruct a portal by using Yggdrasil to get to Asgard & transport Thor back for something important I assume.

Based on this info and the very accurate rumor that Loki is teaming up with the Skrulls it all makes sense. Loki cannot warp jump through the rainbow bridge anymore either, so I imagine he teams up with the Skrulls using them as a means to travel to Earth and wage revenge against Thor.

This could also give the Skrulls an incentive to invade a very resource rich planet they would not have bothered to find otherwise (thinking realistically here). I say this, because Thor must end up on Earth eventually due to Foster, Selvig, and SHIELD's help.

Just speculation of course, what do you guys think?

Hahaha @ElBicho! I hate when people do that too, but I thought I should be as equally annoying as some of those other folks on CBM doing the "first" crap....only one time though.

And thanks btw.

dont you think that if loki was going to be the main villain in the Avengers, Captain America would logically irrelevant to lead the avengers when thor knows the know-how?

@SexyResults: Hardly, I think I spoiled just one little thing at the very beginning. The rest is just closely built up and carefully thought out speculation.

She has to be in it, it wouldn't make sense if she wasn't considering Thor has someone he loves back on Earth who looks to be responsible for bringing him back.

I think it's Marvel holding up the suspense.

Thor can open portals and travel anywhere he wants without any rainbow bridge .

If this is true (based on the Thor script I read) the inclusion of Skarsgard's character (and what he specializes in) definitely validates the report yesterday about the possible villain(s) for The Avengers being Loki and The Skrulls.

I still think the Skrulls are a bad idea. While I have faith in Whedon to deliver a great ensemble movie, I think that the formation of the team, followed by them fighting the Hulk and possibly then teaming up with him to fight the Skrulls would just be too much for one two hour film. Iron Man 2 showed what can happen when you try and put too much in a movie. This is an intriguing piece of news though.

This is interesting. Why would such a seemingly small character cross over to The Avengers? I haven't read the script..I guess MF there knows!

I'm also not pleased about the Skrulls(if true). I never thought much of them really. I do have faith in Whedon, but Hulk and Loki would have been fine. I guess they didn't want the Avengers villain to be the Thor villain..one that Thor on his own can beat. But they could have used Ultron or something too. Had Loki control him. I dunno. Skrulls threatens to turn this into another alien invasion movie and I don't want that.

I think Selvig is a skrull and it will be revealed that loki was working with them the entire time.
Orphix

The thing about all these movies is that the casting is so flexible. I remember listening to SLJ say on many occassions that he was in CA:TFA but not in Thor - several times in fact.

Then, late on in the production, he mentioned that he does have a small part.

I guess the story is so fluid and that one film affects another so that last minute changes can be made.

My point? Maybe Foster and Paltrow (along with anyone else we have seen so far) could appear. No wonder Marvel have such a ball-ache sorting out contracts.
