THE AVENGERS: 8 Things We Need To See If Marvel Studios Ever Reboots The Franchise

With rumours swirling that Marvel Studios plans to reboot the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, we've got some requests for what the next iteration of Earth's Mightiest Heroes should look like on screen...

The Avengers franchise has been Marvel Studios' biggest success, with the 2012 movie proving a cinematic universe could work by uniting a number of characters from separate projects.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes have since assembled in a number of movies, including Captain America: Civil War and the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame. Next up is The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, with the latter rumoured to serve as a full-blown reboot for the MCU as we know it.

If that does happen, then The Avengers will no doubt assemble again, albeit in a very different way. Marvel Studios' take on the team was initially heavily inspired by The Ultimates, but there are some classic comic book elements and ideas we'd like to see in the next iteration.

From a new base to unexplored characters and storylines, you'll find our suggestions by clicking on the "Next" button below.

8. Avengers Mansion

avengers-Mansion

Originally Howard Stark's Manhattan home, Tony Stark would later use his father's Fifth Avenue mansion as a base for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The team spent decades calling Avengers Mansion their home, and it eventually housed everything from training facilities to a number of Quinjets.

Many of the team even ended up living here, with She-Hulk, for example, politely asked to leave after her nighttime antics started bothering her fellow Avengers.

It appears Marvel Studios never seriously considered bringing Avengers Mansion into the MCU, a shame when there's so much fun to be had at this location. After all, many of our favourite comics featuring the team saw it come under attack from their enemies!

7. Jarvis

clean-1

No, not J.A.R.V.I.S. We're talking about Edwin Jarvis, Tony Stark's loyal butler who ends up being a crucial ally to every Avenger who passes through the mansion's doors.

The MCU has established that Edwin was indeed Howard Stark's butler and the character, played by James D'Arcy, has appeared in Agent Carter and even Avengers: Endgame. However, a reboot presents an opportunity to put a new spin on this fan-favourite manservant.

For starters, he needs to be more than just Iron Man's Alfred Pennyworth. Making him the team's eyes and ears back at their base and a butler talked with keeping these superheroes in line would be a blast...and make it hurt all the more if the events of The Avengers #59 and #60 were to be adapted.

6. Multiple Teams

most-popular-superhero-teams-and-groups

If the MCU's expansion has proved anything, it's that there are too many heroes for a single team of Avengers. One way to handle that would be by introducing groups like the Defenders and Champions. Another is to introduce more than one set of Avengers.

From the New Avengers to the Young Avengers, and even the Savage Avengers, Marvel Studios needs to expand this franchise beyond sporadic event movies.

That's an admittedly risky approach and we'd hate to see the series diluted. However, handled correctly, all those characters who can't quite hold their own in solo projects - Hercules, Namor, and the Thunderbolts roster, for example - would get the chance to shine in a meaningful and exciting way.

5. The Original Lineup

clean-2

If Marvel Studios does reintroduce The Avengers, is it too much to ask that we see the original lineup, even if it's only in flashbacks? Iron Man, Thor, and The Hulk were all part of the MCU team, of course, but throwing Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne into the mix as Ant-Man and The Wasp (in their prime) would be a blast.

If their respective comic-accurate costumes were included, it would be a definite plus, though we can appreciate the ship may have sailed on that happening.

A slow-burn approach to this group's adventures contradicts our previous suggestion, but it also has potential. Just imagine Earth's Mightiest Heroes discovering Captain America in place of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

4. Superhero Rivalries And Romances

If there's one thing The Avengers franchise has never really had time for, it's romance. Yes, we know most of you will probably argue it shouldn't be a priority in these action-packed epics, but it's been part of the team's status quo since the start.

Ant-Man and The Wasp, for example, were romantically linked from the day these heroes first assembled. Since then, we've seen Thor and She-Hulk, the Scarlet Witch and Captain America, and Hawkeye and Black Widow all find love on the field.

The Vision and the Scarlet Witch's MCU dynamic should give you an idea about how much fun this might be in future movies.

3. Classic Villains

clean-3

We've seen Earth's Mightiest Heroes battle the likes of Loki, Ultron, Baron Zemo, and Thanos on screen, so it's not like Marvel Studios has failed in this respect.

However, there are plenty of other baddies from the comics we'd like to see The Avengers assemble against in future movies (where reality itself isn't necessarily on the line). Among those who instantly spring to mind are the Masters of Evil, Count Nefaria, the Super-Adaptoid, and the Wrecking Crew.

We're sure this is coming but, c'mon, let's scale things back a little and put threats like Thanos and Kang the Conqueror on the shelf so The Avengers can be tested in new and unexpected ways.

2. Cosmic Avengers

Kree-Skrull-War1

We've seen some of The Avengers head into outer space to do battle with Thanos, but when it comes to a full-blown cosmic epic...well, we're still waiting.

Confining the Kree/Skrull War to a subplot in Captain Marvel before messily continuing it in Secret Invasion has proven to be a major misstep on Marvel Studios' part. As one of the most epic Avengers comic book stories, it's a crying shame this hasn't been brought to the big screen and done justice.

That can easily be rectified down the line by sending this team into outer space to combat an alien war. The likes of Mar-Vell and the Fantastic Four could be thrown into the mix for a crossover event with the potential to leave jaws on the floor.

1. Avengers Vs. X-Men

avengers-vs-x-men

Talking of crossovers, this needs to be the next big story Marvel Studios builds to. However, for this to work, The Avengers franchise will have to be rebooted.

Simply put, it won't be the same seeing this story play out without characters like Captain America, Iron Man, and The Hulk. The premise has a tonne of potential either way, but the tension between these two teams needs to be explored over several years before a boiling point is reached and they go to war.

We can see this movie breaking countless box office records and, when it comes to who should win, we'd suggest the two teams eventually unite to tackle a bigger threat (though our money would be on the X-Men scoring the victory).

These are the kinds of lists we need. Lists about what we need. Put that on the list of lists that we need.

The prospect of an MCU reboot is rich with opportunity for including things that they didn't or were unable to before.

You know what I've always wanted to see? Aunt May's wheatcakes. And no I'm not talking about Marosa Tomei's babyfeeders. Already saw them in The Wrestler. No, I mean actual wheatcakes. All piled up on a plate because Peter's a growing boy.

All StarkTech and no wheatcakes makes MCU Peter Parker a very dull boy.

That would be at the top of my list of 'AUNT MAY: 8 Things We Need To See If Marvel Studios Ever Reboots The Franchise', right after the Doc Ock marriage storyline.

Lost me at AvX. Heroes vs heroes is the worst trend.

The desperation is real when a butler makes the list for needed things in the MCU.

This is one of your better lists, I hope we get a more comic book accurate take on The Avengers.

We should have had The Masters Of Evil before now.

@marvel72 - Then we could have had a real Thunderbolts movie.

This is one of the better Josh lists. Agree with 8-2. Disagree with #1 until both teams are well established and there is a good reason for them to square off.

I don't agree with the mansion (xmen comparison immediately) nor do i want to see a live action version of Jarvis, who was great in Agent Carter. I dont want to see Xmen v Avengers, but the rest isnt bad at all. im shocked that this list isnt all dogsh*t.

I love the idea of rebooting the MCU with every Marvel character at their disposal. Though I'll say part of the charm in the MCU's early years was seeing what they could do with a limited roster of recognizable characters. Innovation is always sparked by limitations, funny enough. The MCU, Star Wars, etc. I always loved the "Tony Stark built that suit in a cave with a box of scraps" line as also this sort of poetic meta line about how the MCU came to be.

But restarting with limitless possibilities is exciting, as a Marvel fan. If the first iteration of the MCU revolved around Iron Man, I wonder what round 2 would focus on as the glue? Cap? Spidey? The X-Men? Maybe the Hulk?

I'd probably go with Fantastic Four, but it depends on what they do with this whole Secret Wars business.

I don't think they'll ever recapture the hype of Infinity War and Endgame, but there are some interesting stories left to tell with characters who have already been retired from the MCU.

First post!
Can we please stop with the reboot stuff? The mcu has been special amongst other films before and after the copycatting began with other failed cinematic universes and doesnt need a reboot in any sense of the word, imo. The way its going we are likely going to just hopefully keep moving forward towards the future. The toybox feige refers to still contains doctor doom, magneto, sabretooth, galactus, silver surfer, annihilus, kingpin, mephisto, ghost rider, fantastic 4, x-men etc. We do not need another iron man /tony stark when armor wars is still around the corner, the multiverse stuff isnt over yet so there still room for a tom cruise cameo and we have both real war machine and ironheart to work with still. The mcu shouldnt need a reboot once its actually done telling its stories and that shouldnt b for a long time still. Like phase 10 maybe, and once that happens, if Im still alive to see it, I dont think ill much care for the next generation and ill b happy to b stuck in my ways with my 101 blu-ray collection lol.

For most of these it doesn't even need a reboot. I get people want the classic characters, but the multiverse is such a big thing they might as well bring variants in.

Also, I don't get this reboot talk. Like I said, they can just bring in variants. As for the rest, I think it's that people want better quality. A reboot isn't gonna fix that.

When the MCU decides to reboot, I love the idea of the Avengers finding frozen Cap. It would be great to introduce him that way and perhaps even build the movie around it.

Well, except for Avengers vs. X-Men, all those other ideas are terrible.

But will we get the watered down 3rd string young DEI chick Avengers vs. the X-Men? That would suck.

@DocSpock - DEI chick Avengers vs Race/Gender Swapped X-Men (Because why not Race and gender swapping the team that is already the most inclusive team in comics?)
