We see a trailer sometimes 2 or 3 years before the film! Is this good practice or does it lead to problems?

Do you remember seeing the title of a brand new film outside your local cinema? Do you remember seeing a trailer before the main feature, of a film you'd never heard off before? This days we get trailers maybe 2 or 3 years before the film is released! Is this a good thing? Is it bad? It certainly gives people time to either fall in love with it or to condem it to an early death? The upcoming Avengers line up is already splitting the audience, if the film came out tomorrow we would all go see it, as it is, those unhappy with the omission of, say, the Wasp may not bother with it. Is the teaser doing more harm then good? Lets discuss:
