He said he was 'embarrassed' by his meltdown, during which he threatened to kick the 'f****** ass' of a disruptive cinematographer on the set of Terminator Salvation.

But he insisted the sound technicians had broken an 'essential trust' by recording his expletive-ridden tirade.

'I mean, hey, I did what I did,' the 35-year-old told Total Film magazine.

'I'm not hiding that. I went overboard. But there is an essential trust and it's not a tacit one, it's a verbal one, a spoken one, which is every sound guy says “We are not only not recording, we are not even listening.”

I mean, hey, I did what I did. I'm not hiding that. I went overboard.

So, well, there goes that. I do stress though, it's not in anyway a trust that's there to cover up bad behaviour. It's not about that.'

The American Psycho star said actors had to trust sound crews on sets. 'It's an essential trust that's needed for creativity because you'll often try things and they're abysmal, but if you have a trust there then you'll give it a shot,' he added.

'Sometimes those things end up being wonderful and sometimes they're embarrassing beyond belief but you've got to be able to try them and trust that it's not going to be put out there and mocked.'

But he admitted: 'I'm not making any excuses. I'm not whining. Hey listen, I did it an, it's in public space. Hey, I take the consequences for it.'

And the Batman Begins action man warned fans who can't stop listening to the tirade on YouTube that they could ruin their enjoyment of the upcoming Terminator blockbuster.

'It's not in anyone's interest to know that much,' he said. 'Listen, I'm actually someone that's very anti the whole B-rolls, DVD extras and stuff like that.

'I get that they want to hear about it but to me I look at it as old-school movie magic and with magic you do not reveal your secrets.' Read the full interview in the new Total Film magazine.
