Warner Bros. Had No Plans For A BATGIRL Movie Until Joss Whedon Changed Their Minds
New details about Batgirl have been revealed and we now know that it wasn't Warner Bros. that approached Joss Whedon about the movie as the filmmaker actually went to them with a pitch for the movie.
Variety has a piece up about Warner Bros.' plans for future DC Comics adaptations and there's a very interesting tidbit in there about Batgirl. We first heard about the movie when it was revealed that The Avengers director Joss Whedon would be both writing and directing the DC Comics adaptation.
However, while many fans assumed the studio must have fought hard to get Whedon on board the project, the trade reveals that it wasn't a project they'd given any thought to "until Whedon confessed to his love of Barbara Gordon and her masked alter ego." Since he made that pitch, Batgirl was given the green light. It's unclear just how much that had to do with his decision to help with Justice League.
Given the success of Wonder Woman, it's hard to imagine the studio not considering a Batgirl movie at some point but it appears as if we definitely have Whedon to thank for it finally becoming a reality.
Batgirl doesn't have a release date but it's possible that Whedon will start work on it once Justice League is finished. We'll have to wait and see as it's one of many DC Comics movies in development but Warner Bros. would be foolish to let the filmmaker not work on what is clearly a passion project.
