Batman 3 Main Villain; Contenders and Method

Batman 3 Main Villain; Contenders and Method

We all know Mr. Nolan is the most secretive even more than the Studio about his Batman films, but what villain can we expect? Who can we expect to portray the character and what sort of tone will the character be? Follow the link to hear my views.

There has been just too many rumors surrounding Mr. Edward Nygma aka The Riddler to dismiss it as just that; rumours so it seems concreted on that the Riddler will feature at least in Batman 3. So what sort of Riddler can we expect in Batman in the serious real world tone Nolan has created. Certainly nothing along the lines of purple faced villains and green spandex that is more reminiscent of the Joker than the Riddler film at the very least.

My view on the Riddler depends on the actor playing the role. Nolan knows who his key players are when it comes to films and who he wants to play them. He will write a role for a person who he has in mind and because he is such respect, they rarely turn him down.

My first take on the Riddler that he may go for is a really messed up obsessed Riddler, the type that's house is literally covered in newspaper articles surrounding Batman. Every wall space is filled with newspaper clippings leading to Batman's identity, activities etc. This is a psychologically damaged Riddler. The actor in mind; Robin Williams. He has missed out on roles in the past for Batman films but I think he would absolutely own the Riddler with this take. He can go from the serious obsessed to the scarely maniac obsessed in a heart beat. His performce in "One Hour Photo" is what I have in mind. Absolutely amazing performace and would definately bring something else to the Batman films opening it up to a wider audience meaning a $1 billion revenue seems likely.

The other take on the Riddler I can picture is not so much a "crazy obsessed man" but more an obsessed suave and incredibly clever man. They still have newspaper on the wall but not on every wall, more a specific wall and use a charade to hide his obsessedness behind much like Bruce Wayne hides behind his partyboy charade. The actor in mind for this role, Chris Nolan's new playmate; Leonardo Di Caprio. Such a diverse actor would be able to easily pull this off and also coming with such a big name would also attract people to come and watch the film alongside Bale. This Riddler is more harmful in the sense that he is doing it on purpose to prove a point, where Robin Williams' Riddler is more crazy and feels that he "needs" to do it.

Very opposite and contrasting sides of a very dynamic coin. They are the two ideas I can see being pitched for the take on the Riddler. Either one would work well with Nolan in charge and would add to the film. My prefered choice. Robin Williams' Riddler would be more scarry and would add that scary psychological thriller element to the film that would get "non action" fans coming to see how that works against the world of action that Batman brings. It would be a very unique film and if worked out well; which is will be will definately equal The Dark Knight's success if not surpass it.

haha don't sweat it @Dave

you made some great points. robin williams as the riddler would be crazy. it's weird because i can totally see him playing the ridder but at the same time i can't at all. like heath ledger. yeah i could see him playing the joker but you really couldn't "SEE" it until you saw that first picture or first clip. thats how this would be. it would be something no one has ever seen before and therefore very hard to picture the final product. but i support him getting a shot.

as for leo and/or JGL - i love them both. either of them would be a win in my book.

I really, really don't want to see the Riddler, for reasons that I and many others have brought up and won't bring up again (unless you ask nicely). I would much rather seesomeone else: Black Mask or Hush as the main villains and throw in Bane or Grundy (preferably) as a grunt/side villain.

I want Hugh Laurie to play the riddler... he can play obsessed+brilliant+a little crazy, plus he looks good with a cane.

Good article and you brought up good points and observations. Robin would make a great Riddler, but I think Nolan would want to go with someone younger for the part like Christian or Heath. Leo seems like the more likely candidate but Robin would be mesmerizing none the less. Great editorial! :)

P.S.

If you could, please be on the look out for my upcoming editorial. I've been throwing this around all day but I've been working hard on it, and am still. So if you're ever interested:

Both your ideas are good but I'd have the Riddler just as obsessed with Joker than Batman. He wants the same goal but doesn't use the same methods. Have a sort of "out of the chaos comes order" tag line. He believes the Joker failed because he was too chaotic in his methods and got sloppy. It would also tie things together.

@ Ron and Dave i like the sounds of your opinions! ha ha however Dave, i don't think either of your picks would be the best actors to portray the riddler. i think it should be Joseph Gordon-Levitt. have you ever seen the movie Kill Shot? he plays this psychopath hitman and it's awesome! he would make a great riddler on either one of your riddler characteristics. also i think if they are to do ANOTHER batman after this one, they should tie in Thomas Elliot and make him seem like bruce's best buddy and then in the next film make Hush the ultimate villain! also, we HAVE to see the joker in some sort of aspect in the film! at least let us know he's around! i dunno, just my thoughts!

I rarely submit my opinions on this site though I lurk it frequently. I have to say though, the Riddler would be a perfect fit for the Noland's movies because both movies lacked the very crucial element that makes up Batman... He's a detective first and foremost.
Now, we've seen Bale doing the minimal amount of detective work in the previous movies albeit with aide from high tech gizmos (the bullet fragment)... But none that actually puts his deductive reasoning to the test.
The Riddler is perfect for this set-up, leaving clues and and dark messages throughout the storyline for a gritty "whodunit"- I'm thinking more along the lines of Se7en than the hokey "Riddle me this" jokey punchlines we've come to know from the Adam West series. He doesn't have to be silly either. Riddler is not the Joker, Riddler isn't an anarchist agent of chaos, he's more like Dr. Moriarty to Sherlock Holmes. Not a flipside to Batman's "order and principle" but a rival to his intelligence and detective work.

Thoughts?

@ ghosty

I like your emphasis on Batman's deductive reasoning and challenging his rational skills. Perhaps the Riddler can be the mental challenge while Ban eis the physical challenge. Throw in unknown Anarky as the guy who thinks he's doing Batman a favor by killing the government agents who are hunting Batman.
