A RUTHLESS Review/Rant: Why BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE is the WORST Movie Ever Made

A RUTHLESS Review/Rant: Why BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE is the WORST Movie Ever Made

After months of completely blocking this movie from my mind, I have decided to finally review this "movie" and get some things off my chest in a little review/rant. Be warned. Read at your own risk...

First of all...I just want to say this...[frick] YOU Bruce Timm and Brian Azzarello you piece of gahbage hacks who RUINED the character of Batgirl and Batman for me. Okay then. Just needed to get that off my chest first.

So back when this movie was first announced, I was a bit worried that they would completely follow the comic book storyline scene per scene. I was worried because Barbara Gordon was barely a character in the comic and was just used as a misogynistic plot device. So when it was announced that Barbara Gordon would get even more story and an entire prologue that promised even more character development. I was pretty excited for this since Barbara Gordon is perhaps my second favorite DC Comics character after Harley Quinn.

Then the movie came...and the rest is history.

Sure Barbara was given more screentime and an entire prologue, but this so-called "prologue" completely violated and RUINED the character of Batgirl. First, it turns her basically into some sex-crazed boy-crazy schoolgirl who fantasizes about [frick]ing her teacher/mentor/father-figure Batman. Seriously Bruce Timm? This right here is the definition of misogyny. You PROMISED to give Barbara a better storyline in this movie. Having her want to [frick] Batman is NOT [frick]ing better! Somehow Bruce Timm and his lacky goon Brian Azzarello turned the most degrading story about Batgirl and make it even more [frick]ing degrading. Batgirl is a [frick]ing sex object in this piece of gahbage movie. This is worse than the Killing Joke comic. Much worse. This movie is an INSULT to the very character of Batgirl. It is an even bigger insult to her fans. And shame on you Batman. Bruce Timm and his goon writer turned Batman into a pedophile sexual assaulting moronic creep. Come on Batman. You're supposed to be the world's smartest man and yet you basically sexually assault a teenage girl who is half your age. This is basically incest since Batman is a father-figure to Barbara. And poor Robin. Batgirl and Robin have like a thing and old creepy Batman still does the deed. And sadly this movie isn't the first time this has started. Bruce Timm has a disgusting perverted fetish for shipping Batgirl and Batman. This has been pretty obvious even from the days of Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond.

So in conclusion...[frick] this movie and the people who made it. The reason why I am so pissed off is because I am a fan of Batgirl if that wasn't obvious from what I wrote up there. Also, because I am (was) a fan of Batman before this movie came out. I just can't look at him the same ever the same, in animation or live-action. 2016 has been the year of the death of Batman. The title of this movie is indeed accurate since it was a joke of a movie and it killed the character of Batman for me.

This movie completely and utterly destroyed the essence of whatever was left of my soul.

So to finish this whole rant...let me end on a comparison for old times' sake. Batman: The Killing Joke is the real life equivalent to going to a party and finding out another girl is wearing the same exact outfit as you. You girls and fabulous men out there know what I'm talking about. As Marlon Brando once said, The horror...the horror. If you aren't a girl or a fabulous man then the above situation I compared to this movie...the situation about the same outfit...all you need to know is that it's bad. Absolutely bad and terrible and awful and embarassing in every single way. That is all.

Rant over.

While i agree that the movie was total [frick]ing garbage, I don't think it was sexual assualt since Batgirl was the one who initiated it. But regardless, the whole thing was pretty disgusting.

Misogynistic plot device? Yeah. @Ruthless that was kind of the point of the original comic. To show the Joker as the worst possible being and to shed grey on Batman's activities. The comic isn't about her and complaining about a supervillain being a villain? All in all, this movie was trash. If it had good animation... maybe? But it was pretty shit. Should've just stuck to the original comic. Is Batman/Batgirl incest? No. Is it Shakespearian incest ala Hamlet? Yes.

Yeah that whole Batgirl part of the movie was bad and unnecessary, but c'mon, the rest was 100% TKJ, so i still enjoyed it.
Besides...if you're a Timm/TAS fan....it wasn't THAT bad...anyone read that Batman Beyond Comic? Nothing new over here.
TJK > Batgirl Prologue---> Still a hit.

I get your rage and frustrstion with this movie, but don't let one movie ruin the characters you love. This wasn't the first time writers took liberties with beloved characters and handled them poorly, and it won't be the last. Thankfully, there are other folks who have written excellent stories involving Batgirl and Batman, and that will continue.

I was not anticipating this movie. When you have to add a prologue that never existed to set up a movie, then you either need a full prequel or a better script.

Also, this comic, while loved by most, is not one of my favorites. Rape, while explicit or implied, is not something I look for in my entertainment, and I feel that it should be left out unless it is there for a good purpose. Shock value or showing how demented another character can be is a cheap and disgusting reason to add a rape into a script for anything. I get that the Joker is messed up and he kills people all the time. But to me, rape is way beyond the realm of anything I want to see in my downtime... fictional or not. It's the 2nd most heinous crime. And now I'm a bit disgusted for typing about it for so long.

Anyway, with or without the prologue, I really felt the movie was not good. And having read the comic, I never felt it would translate that well into a movie without a ton of things changed (and then you would have this thing that was similar to but not as good as the original).

In closing, some things are better left alone. Like the Killing Joke (or the Crow). Many may feel it is a great comic. And it might be. But I think it does not translate well into a movie.

@TomSolo - i think it could be a movie, but a short film with a high budget

@BillCipher999 - Maybe. I think the pacing though translates well on the page, but has to be changed for film, and then you run into issues.

Also, it requires a knowledge of the setting and characters. It might work for fans, but the GA would have trouble without a lot of exposition.

@TomSolo - I agree, i really dont think anything needs to be added to it. I actually hated the harley easter egg as it too early for her to be showing up.

@BillCipher999 - It's been awhile, but I think the continuity got a little goofy. Harley was in the animated series, and so was Batgirl. So the Killing Joke was after this, then she should be around somewhere. But I'm not certain if the animated series is canon with the comics. Probably not, I guess.
