BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD - Ben Affleck Rumored To Direct DCU Reboot

We know Ben Affleck has been in talks with DC Studios to helm one of its upcoming DCU projects, and a new rumor points to the former Batman stepping behind the camera for The Brave and the Bold...

Around this time last month, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran officially announced the first part of their new DCU slate, and it included a Batman reboot titled The Brave and the Bold.

Shortly after, Gunn confirmed that Ben Affleck - who had previously played the Dark Knight in Zack Snyder's films and was originally going to direct the movie that became Matt Reeves' The Batman - was in talks to helm one of the upcoming projects.

"We're working with Ben Affleck, who really wants to be a part of our architecture team, trying to bring things together. And he really wants to direct one of our projects and we're looking forward to him doing that."

This understandably led to speculation that Affleck may step behind the camera to bring a new take on the iconic hero to the screen, and a new rumor is now claiming that he is indeed set to direct The Brave and the Bold.

Not too much to go on here, but if Affleck really is set to helm an upcoming DCU movie, the planned Batman reboot would make the most sense.

The Brave and the Bold won't be a direct adaptation of the comic series of the same name, but it will introduce the "Bat-Family and follow Bruce Wayne's attempts to wrangle his new Robin, Damian Wayne, under control in a father/son story."

What do you guys make of this rumor? Do you think Affleck should be involved with this new take on Batman, or would he be better suited to a different character? Drop us a comment down below.

UPDATE: While Gunn hasn't addressed the rumor directly, he was tagged in a post reporting on it, and took the opportunity to respond to a being called a "professional liar."

Surely the ideal time to shut down the rumor if there was no truth to it, right?

When Affleck was initially announced to play Batman, they also said he was going to write and direct his solo film too. I was honestly more excited that he was going to write and direct a Batman film than him playing the character.
He's one of the best writers and directors out there and he knows the character.

Affleck is one hell of a director. I say let him have at it. Just a shame we never got to see some of his ideas for the Barman vs. Deathstroke movie that got canned.

@ModHaterSLADE - If he's really getting this gig then maybe we will see his Batman vs Deathstroke ideas play out. Just because it's a new universe doesn't mean he can't still have that story happen.

From what we know of the original plan, Deathstroke knew who Batman is and was going to attack both Bruce's life and Batman. There's absolutely no reason they can't still do that. They would need to give a different reason for how Deathstroke figures out who Batman is. But so what? That's a minor detail.

@ModHaterSLADE - Well the batman and son book that this movie looks to be slightly based off of had deathstroke as one of the main villains of the story so he could probably still utilize a lot of his idea for his old script in a different way and still get to use deathstroke and have some amazing fight scenes

Argo is one of the most overrated best picture winners. That being said, Ben is a more than solid director. A Batman film from him would be cool to see.

@GhostDog - once I heard all the liberties they took in that movie, I was a lot less impressed. Yes, I was still impressed, they went through something I certainly never went through, but the movie made it seem like they went through some thing I never went through! When, in fact, it was something I never went through!

@TheWalkingCuban - yea that movie is legitimately a CROCK OF SHIT when it comes to telling that story truthfully.

@GhostDog - oh big time. I was ridiculously impressed when I first watched it. Read the story and said that’s it. I will never fall for that again. Fell for that again, now that I think about it. King Richard. “Dem peepaz gon say you to don’t play no tentist on dey cote” Games probably weren’t even tense.

Idk man💁

A Ben Affleck directed Batman film would be cool if it wasn't for the fact we have reeves now💪

Ben Affleck and his tone of films would be mimicking reeves quite a bit💁

@AmazingFILMporg

I think whoever makes this movie, Affleck or not, is going to differentiate it enough from Reeves universe. Probably a bit more high tech, ridiculous than Reeves grounded, noir tone.

They don’t have a choice.

That's why he is a bad choice. Love his directing style though.

@AmazingFILMporg - I don't think he would mimick Reeve's tone. The Brave and the Bold's tone would have to be different anyway because of the theme of the story. It will be about the Bat family, so Bruce will be in a different space mentally. If it's going to be about him and Damien, then we already know that he's already had 3 'sons' and Barbara before that. And Gunn will more than likely want to make sure and stay true to source unlike Snyder and Co with their Robin. I feel it will take a lighter approach, no to dissimilar to Birds of Prey. Whilst I know that movie isn't loved, I think it did alright for what it was.

I was not a fan of Affleck as Batman but I am a fan of him as a director. I hope he does well.

@defenderofthefaith - Affleck wasn't really the problem with that Batman. He did a good job playing the character he was told to play. It was Snyder that made that Batman bad. Snyder didn't understand these characters. Affleck didn't make Batman a bloodthirsty murderer. Affleck didn't make Batman easily manipulated into fighting Superman. Affleck didn't make Batman a xenophobe. That was all Snyder.

I think it's about time Warner takes a chance with a live action Batman series. This should be a series and they can fully flesh out the Batman family. They have had so many superman or superboy series.

Would this be a first? Has anyone ever gone on to direct a different iteration of a character they’ve played in the past?

DudeGuy - 3/1/2023, 8:45 PM
@dracula - but what if it’s as good as Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo? Don’t understand why we judge someone based on one bad day at the office. Yeah Live By Night wasn’t his best effort, but it wasn’t trash.
