David Goyer Says "Batman Rumors are B.S."

You've heard them all, Depp is the Riddler, Hoffman the Penguin, CHER Catwoman, etc. The latest is that Nolan has signed on for Batman 3. Well, according to David Goyer, its all a load of crap!

“It’s all B.S.,” he said. “ALL of it.”

That means, no, Nolan has not signed on (yet). No, there is no casting, let alone TALK, of villains, and, no, nobody is certain to return.

“Chris and I haven’t even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself,” Goyer said.

Goyer means they haven’t talked about it “officially,” although, of course, he does admit – as he did when we chatted in July – that they’ve loosely bandied about themes and more.

“We have mused here and there [but] I mean Chris is pretty much a one movie at a time kind of guy,” Goyer said. “I wish I could tell you more. There really isn’t anything to tell.”

I knew all that stuff was bogus--especially the cher/catwoman rumor.

I have faith in Nolan. But as a gargantuan Batman fan boy, I have to say that there are a few things I would like to see in the third, and hopefully (cause I don't want to see my favorite hero over killed)last installment of the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale arc:

1)I would like to see someone who poses a grave, physical threat to Batman. In my opinion, superhero movies (and action flicks in general) are at their best when you have that CLIMACTIC showdown in the end. The one without guns or bombs, but simply mano y mano. Batman Begins had a less-than-exhilarating, but still entertaining showdown between Batman and Rahs Al Ghul, in which Batman got spanked. Yet in TDK, there was virtually no one who could best Batman. This was a problem with the original Spider-Man in my opinion: The first film had three very short scraps between Spidey and Goblin, yet none were very satisfying. However, in Spider-Man II, there were again three fights between Spidey and Ock, and they were all very good, ESPECIALLY the second one where the two clash atop a sky scraper and continue their battle to random train track, with Spidey getting pummeled pretty thoroughly. So, my first requirement, would be an epic, yet NOT OVERDONE (See Anakin vs Obi Wan) fight between Bats and mabye Bane!!

2)I would like a firm resolution to the current Batman saga. One that makes sense, and doesn't have villians thrown into the mix just to say "Look at OUR take on Riddler and Penguin!!" Joker was fantastic, but was also VERY reminiscent of his comic counter part. Heath was just the perfect man for the job. But also I must admit, that if they got maybe Ben Foster in Batman 3 to take up the role of Joker, I think that would be a good choice. Nolan and Goyer obviously planned on a third, despite what they say. They're both too smart to have Batman on the lam as a fugitive without contemplating how they would resolve this. Joker inevitably would have been at LEAST briefly featured in the next movie. Also this last installment should tie up any lose ends and be made without the fear of leaving room for another sequel. I wanna see Nolan just finish what he started.

3)I'd like to see Robin or Nightwing in this one, only because, growing up a comic book fan, I always thought it was cool that there was a kid who was on par with Batman on many levels. Plus it's an interesting dynamic with the whole surrogate father/brother, as well as mentor and trainer. Batman can watch the obsession with justice manifest inside someone else, and can also watch another person endure and deal with the same tragedy that nearly cost him his soul. An interesting note, in this installment, (Apparently, using the nickname for "Richard" is edited out...so that's why I'll address him proper) Richard's parent's killer may not be murdered by a third party, thus affording Robin the opportunity to kill the killer. This would add a great dynamic to the mix.

4)Commissioner Gordon reveals to Batman that he knows his true identity. It's been widely speculated in comics that Gordon DOES know. The guy is pretty bad ass in a boyscout way. I think he deserves to be credited with the intelligence to make such a deduction!

The third act is really tough, which is why I have so many requirements (and I'm sure Nolan will lose sleep over making me happy!) When Spider-Man came out in '02, I told my sister that this was a really big deal, because X-Men set the standard, and Spidey had to outdo it. It's easy to get (okay, yet another word I can't use without involuntary edit: c*cky), and I've notice that in comic franchises, the third one is anything but the charm. Don't believe me? Then what about...
1.X-Men: The Last Stand=Lets kill off Prof X and Jean AND Scott, and have a REALLY flashy, yet really FLIMSY story. That's the way to do it!
2.Spider-Man 3=That one is just pure Sh*t!! Okay? I could have a coked up chimp write a better treatment for a Spider-Man flick, ESPECIALLY after such an INCREDIBLE predecessor!!
3.Blad Trinity=Never was a big fan of the Blade movies, but the fights in Blade II were among the best I ever saw. Soution to that problem: lobotomize the already so-so writing and add some up and comers to keep the franchise FRESH...and a really lame plot...result= the only good thing about this movie was Jessica Biel's hotness and Ryan Reynold's one-liners.
4. Superman 3=Again, awe-inspiring predecessor...craptastic follow-up with gimmicky casting and a jack ass plot.
5. Batman Forever: Now while I DID like this one, it did mark the departure (drastic) from the Burton Universe and the arrival on the doorstep of camp-tastic plots and revolving Batmen with nipple-suits.

Okay sorry to rant on and on, but I have time to kill before class! Wanna hear back from people about my thoughts!!

Despite never for a millisecond believing and being amused by the rumours its nice to have them put to bed. Leaving them to cobble together their follow-up. I expect another uber-realist devout representation of batmans world with alot of threads tying into a single one-word theme that many will debate which is better out of the three not counting their blessings we've gotten the 3 bat-films we have.

I still think Depp as the Riddler would be brilliant and that casting alone could make the third film box office success once again...I'd also like to see Two-Face again, not enough credit is given to Eckhart who I thought did an astounding job, I think he deserves more time. But perhaps he is truly dead.

I am so glad the rumors are false. Never actually believing in them, although that one about Depp as the Riddler looked promising, I am glad because that would give away too much information about the plot. I just don't want to see another 3rd sequel and hate it (Shrek 3, Matrix 3, Spiderman 3, X Men 3, etc). I had those exact doubts before I saw Iron Man. Spiderman 3 really lost my interest in Marvel films. Luckily Marvel 'Studios' didn't disappoint.

Nolan has a hell of a long time to work on a third Batman in my opinion. I would expect filming to be finished by 2011-2012. The Dark Knight was incredible and I loved it. So, Nolan's 3rd one shouldn't be a disappointment. It is a real shame Bale won't be doing a Bat-film with a Robin character (I just like Nightwing). Maybe if Donell's Robin didn't suck, Bale wouldn't be so opposed with it. But I do see why he would be.

In the end, Nolan's 3rd film has a very high possibility of killing off another important character (Alfred?). It also has a high chance of sucking big time. I can't recall a 3rd film that really blew me away. I can only hope that this next one, if or when it ever gets made, shouldn't disappoint. While Nolan works on his other films for now, Watchmen anyone?

Fact one is, that everybody in Hollywood will try to get some role in the upcoming Batman sequel (for the purpose of eternal glory and reckognition).
Second fact is, that you can kill a franchise with casting some actors that are in the moment very popular in Hollywood but do not have the right stuff for some roles (like Clooney in Batman). Johnny Depp is a great Pirate but would be a very bad Riddler. You simply cannot be great in two so different stories.
I think that the studio will make a big mistake if they let Chris decide on everything and give him "open choices" (remember Peter Jackson, after LOTR, King Kong was really bad). Everyone must always stay on solid ground, thats way Steven Spielberg and George Lucas always make good movies. You cannot after one or two good movies think of yourself as a great movie director. If we must wait for the next sequel five years, better five years waitting for a good movie, then one year for a bad movie (like matrix revolutions). Remember about Terminator II, we have waited for seven years for the sequel.
My choices for the enemies in the upcoming Batman sequels would be: Catwoman - Rose McGowan, The Penguin - Steve Zahn, The Riddler - Matthew McConaughey. Why not??? And Tim Burton should be involved in making the next sequel with Chris!!!
Best regards,
Branko from Bosnia and Herzegovina

Well we all know they will be a third batman film and quite possibly many more, the question is will in inolve Nolan, we all hope it does of course as we dont want a x-men 3 scenario. 3rd films typically are seen as let downs, mainly due to rushed productions, studio interference and changed personale, so these knee-jerk batman 3 rumours and want worry me for that, after begins Nolan did prestige before beginning dark knight so id rather WB waits even if it takes 3-4 years, im scared they will try and capitalise and the success and turn it over for 2010 come hell or high water.

Having said that Nolan will not be and shouldnt be the be and and end all of batman films, i expect many more in my lifetime, i just want Nolan to finish his trilogy so we have 3 high quality bat films to show how it should or at can be done to inform hollywood so we'll never have to see a schumacker honor the 60's and just honour the batman.

Some of what you said was correct, however I would have to disagree on a few things. First, Nolan did excellent with The Prestige and that was a film he did in between Begins and The Dark Knight. Nolan is pretty picky in what he does and usually is invested in the film. Plus, he seems to take his time and build the movie like a good novel.

Also, George Lucas does not make good movies. Star Wars is a classic, but he got lucky with good timing on that one. Indiana Jones was more a credit to Spielberg and the writers than anything else. I think everything else Lucas has made was garbage including the prequels. And Tim Burton should have nothing to do with these Batman movies.

True Dat! Lucas and Spielberg don't always make great films. If they wait too long to make the movie the public will lose interest. I liked Peter Jackson's King Kong, although a bit too long. NO,NO,NO Tim Burton. I imagine that even he wouldn't want to do it. As a consummate artist he would see it as a long step backwards. A Riddler would be cheesy so soon after Heath Ledger's Joker. I do agree with the Catwoman and Penguin model with Robin, but for goodness sake no Mathew McConaughey.
