We know Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker sequel, but a new rumor points to the character having a much bigger role than we realized.

As we draw closer to Joker: Folie à Deux's production start date (cameras are reportedly scheduled to role in LA and New York this November), more details about Todd Phillips' sequel are starting to slip through.

We recently learned that the majority of the movie will take place in Arkham Asylum, and a new rumor may now explain those much-discussed musical elements.

According to our old friends at the Weekly Planet Podcast, Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn will have a bigger role than originally reported, with the story playing out entirely from her perspective. Apparently, this is where the song and dance numbers come in, as Harls "views her relationship with Joker" through musical sequences.

Of course, the title "Folie à Deux" suggests that Fleck will share these delusions.

It's an interesting direction to take this sequel in, for sure, but Phillips has clearly earned a lot of trust at the studio after the first film proved to be a such a massive box office success.

Joaquin Phoenix and Zazie Beetz are set to reprise their respective roles as Arthur Fleck and Sophie Dummond, and we recently learned that Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Jacob Lofland have also joined the cast.

Joker: Folie à deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024. You can check out the announcement teaser below.

Intersting... although I'm still skeptical about the idea of a sequel to the first one, I do appreciate how they're taking a completely new approach. That type of creativity is what makes sequels worthy.

@CaptainDC - I’m always cautious about them overdoing or losing the magic of what worked in the first. But this one I’m optimistic for. Phoenix doesn’t really play around with the projects he chooses, and Todd Phillips did something I never would have expected given his comedies prior. Best I could hope for is that they tap Frank The Tank himself, Will Ferrell to play The Riddler in the third film, haha.

@CaptainDC - they trolled fans. It’ll be another low budget remake that they use the Joker IP to bank on. That’s why Scorsese produced the first and removed his name, it remade his movie. They are repackaging classic movies and instead of them being outright remakes they’re using the available IPs to exploit the fans they don’t respect because they know there’s a built in audience that will pay for anything Joker related. DC is in terrible hands and I don’t believe it gets better. I’ll stick with Pattinsons Batman but they’ve just about tainted everything for me from them.

@thekabsin - Pattinson's Batman is literally repackaged David Fincher films (Se7en and Zodiac in particular, plus Fincher's visual style) and Silence of the Lambs, so they successfully fooled you into paying for anything Batman related and you didn't even notice, my congratulations.

That sounds about how most figured it would. And I think that's for the best. Or at least best way to do a sequel like this.

damn, shifting POV in the sequel is kind of great. if it gets a 3rd film would we see the wayne/batman POV?

Makes sense that the musical bits are just delusions. I don't expect this to be a full-on musical where every important dialogue is done singing, but moreso like how that one The Boys episode suddenly burst into song and dance just for fun.

@MosquitoFarmer - I gotta agree with @theredmeadow overall, although The Blues Brothers is one of the very few musicals I give a pass too, because the movie is "in" on the joke and comes really close to breaking the 4th wall a lot.

I just can't deal with normal people suddenly breaking into song, and I know it's kind of a nitpick, but it doesn't work for me.

That said, I'll be a hypocrite and say, I love the musical bits in the South Park Movie and Team America, but again, the movie is spoofing the entire concept so I'm ok with it! 😁

The bizarre and unique approach has me so hyped. I don’t think a direct, traditional sequel would be justified, but this is just the exact kind of freshness needed for this.
