Patton Oswalt Backs Ben Affleck's BATMAN

By now you're no doubt sick of all things Batfleck, but comedian Patton Oswalt has posted a lengthy comment concerning the casting on Facebook that is certainly worth a read. Check out his thoughts after the jump!

Patton Oswalt's recent Marvel/Star War crossover fanfic cemented the comedians comic book movie cred, now he has shares his thoughts on Warner Bros. latest piece of casting. Check out what he had to say below.

No matter how many times you post your stupid “Fire Ben Affleck from Playing Batman” petition, I’m going to delete it and block you. Take a deep breath, and think for a second:
Yeah, the dude’s made some bad films. Every actor has. Every actor does. Every actor will. It’s a huge, arcing career and NO ONE has control over where it goes. Movie to movie, year to year, you’re collaborating and trying and risking and, sometimes, yes — failing.
Plus, everyone seems to forget that he had the world dropped in his lap when he was YOUNG. And, judging by how other suddenly-famous youngsters do in the same situation, he fared pretty well. Even when it went wrong, he seemed to keep a self-deprecating, long-view philosophy about the burning freak carousel he’d found himself on.
And then what happened? I mean, he’d fallen from a HEIGHT. You know what happens to 95% of people who weather a descent that steep? They come apart, fray at all of their sanity nodes, and give up.
But then there’s the 5% who embrace crushing defeat and see it for the gift it is. And here’s the gift: when you fail, and fail UTTERLY, you wake up the next morning and see that the world didn’t end. And then the fear of failure is gone. And you’re free. You’re free to proceed on your own terms and pace — if you have the ego that permits you to.
Ben brushed himself off, realized he’d kept his eyes open on the movies he’d done, and started directing. And he’s become a damn good one.
A Batman portrayed by someone who’s tasted humiliation and a reversal of all personal valences — kind of like Grant Morrison’s “Zen warrior” version of Batman, post-ARKHAM ASYLUM, who was, in the words of Superman, “…the most dangerous man on the planet”? Think for a second and admit that Ben Affleck is closer to THAT top-shelf iteration of The Dark Knight than pretty much anyone in Hollywood right now.
I’d write more, but I have to go work on my post about how an overweight 44 year-old comedian with bad feet and insomnia would be a bold choice for The Joker.

He certainly raises some valid points, if you're not sick of commenting on it leave your thoughts below.

I think Ben Affleck is going to nail it. I am more happy that he is getting a hand in the writing process. He would be a great counter balance for Goyer.

Yeah I mean I always hate when oscar winners play comic book heroes. And to the DD haters 1. The directors cut of that movie isn't half bad at all. 2. Ben actually did well in the role it was some parts of the script and special effects that made it a let down. Its not the worst comic book movie by far.3. Lastly this way you might have a chance at a good MOS sequel if he has any part of writing it, get goyer the hell out.

I don't understand the outrage. Ben Affleck is a solid actor and as long as he makes it into his own Batman instead trying to reiterate someone else's Batman, then it'll be totally fine.

He was my favorite on 'King of Queens'. I agree though. Maybe Affleck could bring something better to the role of Batman.

Hopefully Affleck will offer his directing skills to a Justice League film or better yet would direct the Batman reboot.

Well said, Mr. Oswalt. Hey, that kind of sounds like Oswald, which is Mr. Cobblepot's (the Penguin's) first name. He kind of looks like the Penguin. Starting my fan campaign right here folks. Patton Oswalt for the Penguin!

In other news Jaleel White, aka Steve Erkle, loves the choice of Ben Affleck as Batman. On the other hand Parkey Posey says she's on the fence.

Ok guys, you're just looking for clicks now.

As for a great director realising he is the wrong actor, he thinks he is good. You think your opinion which is that of a butt hurt fanboy is better than his, hmm his opinion trumps yours :-)

That petition, if meant seriously, is ridiculous, and if meant as satire, well, not that great either. But I don't think that's even up for debate. There are always some folks who take things too far.

Look, I'm really happy for the direction Affleck's career took in the last years. I'm glad he's doing so well and gets all this positive attention - it's deserved, I'm seriously impressed by some of his work! Hell, I'm pretty much a Ben Affleck fan these days.

And if they had announced he was going to be directing the next Batman solo movie(s) I'd be all "damn, that's not a bad choice at all - bring it!". But for him to BE the new Batman in the DCCU - sorry, that's something I have a really hard time thinking of as good decision.
