BARBARIAN Director Hopes His Dream BATMAN Project Could Become A Reality Under New DCU Leadership

Barbarian director Zach Cregger recently revealed that he's written a "Batman-adjacent" script, and with James Gunn and Peter Safran now in charge of the DCU, he'd love to see it become a reality...

The terrifyingly twisted Barbarian was a massive hit with fright-fans (if you haven't seen it, it's... quite something), and writer/director Zach Cregger is sure to be inundated with offers to helm more horror projects in the coming months.

However, it seems the filmmaker is actually more excited by the prospect of working in the comic book movie genre.

While appearing on Bloody Disgusting's podcast, Cregger revealed that he has completed a "Batman- adjacent" script, and would love the opportunity to develop it for the screen.

"The thing I'd love to do next... I've actually written a movie that takes place in the DC Universe. Which is so not normally my thing; I'm not a superhero guy - I just couldn't stop thinking about this one story that kind of takes place in a Batman-adjacent thing. And so I wrote it, and I'm utterly obsessed with it."

Cregger didn't share any specifics on his story, but during a more recent interview with Discussing Film, he described the script as the "best thing I've ever written," and addressed the likelihood of it being brought to the attention of DC Studios now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are in charge.

"If I got the call, I would drop everything and go make that movie in a heartbeat," he said. "It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever written. I love it, and I’m dying to make it. I have not talked to James Gunn in my whole life. I don’t know him but I would certainly love to meet him and have the conversation. Who knows man?"

Gunn has already heaped praise upon Barbarian, so if he was to be made aware of this script, who knows? It'd be nice to learn a little more about this Dark Knight-related tale, so here's hoping Cregger divulges a few more details at some point.

@regularmovieguy - It fell apart for me a little at the end, but I liked it overall. Better than Smile.

A well-written Batman Who Laughs movie could end up being a perfect blending of horror and DC. Unfortunately, that's a lot of backstory to cram into 2.5 hours

@satanicbatman - oh yeah while that would be awesome they’d have to cut a lot of corners to make it work. And at that point the build up to the character would probably be different. He could go a Man Bat route or Killer Croc type of influence in a Batman film. Or Professor Pig (I think that’s his name)

@Arthorious - I would love to never see or hear of the batman who laughs ever again lol

@satanicbatman - That and big studios, outside of Universal..., don't seem to want to turn tentpole comic or sci-fi franchises into horror film franchises as well. I hope this changes. I wanna see an Abeloth film so bad. One of any number of potentially SW horror film trilogies.

@oldnoname - I couldnt agree more. I hate that character so much. I get why it became somewhat popular, but it is so lame and derivative to me.

@Arthorious - Batman’s everywhere. Joker was everywhere. Both together? The over saturation was inevitable lol

So it’ll be 40 minutes of boring talk before anything exciting happens then it’ll be a quick 5 minute scene of action before 20 to 30 more minutes of just talk before something else exciting happens then it ends.
That’s how Barbarian was written. 🤷‍♂️🤣😴

@Uhhhhhh - I was bored with a horror movie that you liked so that means “super hero movies” fried my brains?
You realize that you’re on a site that mainly focuses on super heroes but ok.

@AnthonyVonGeek - I fell alseep during the movie and had to re-watch. it was a boring movie. The story was also just...stupid.
the characters were also stupid. After seeing the neighborhood in the day time, ANYONE would have slept in their car before driving back there lol.

Barbarian was awesome and I’m curious to see what Cregger does next. I think this could happen given Cregger’s enthusiasm for such a film and Gunn being a fan of Barbarian. If it were greenlit, would it be set in the DCEU or Reeves’ universe?

@MovieMonster - I hope it's the DCU. Reeves' verse is, mostly, fine. Let him breathe new life into the DCU.

Obviously I don’t know what this script is about, but I think that the DCU needs to focus on their mainstream IP’s and not adjacent movies.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - The last 15 minutes? dude, it turned far fetched when she drove back to that house instead of sleeping in her car. it became ridiculous when dude went down there and disappeared and she went looking for him. the movie was an eye roll fest.

NO! Take that idea, tweak it, and pick another DC character. I want other DC characters, to build mainstream fanbases.
