Ben Affleck Will Team With Geoff Johns To Co-Write, Direct & Star In A Solo BATMAN Movie

Deadline has confirmed that Ben Affleck will indeed direct and star in a standalone Batman movie for Warner Bros. when he's finished up on his Live By Night adaptation.

As soon as Ben Affleck was officially announced as our new Caped Crusader in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, fans wondered if he might possibly helm a solo outing for the character at some point. Recently we heard rumors that he was being lined up to do just that, and now Deadline seems to have made it official: Ben Affleck will team up with Geoff Johns to write a Batman movie, which he will also direct as soon as work is complete on his adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel Live By Night.

According to the site, the pair are "well in synch and have more than found their rhythm", and are expected to turn in a script before the end of the summer.

No release date is set, and plot details are obviously non-existent at this early stage - but it will most likely be set after the events of Dawn Of Justice, unless WB has yet another origin story in mind for the Dark Knight! Thoughts on this big news?

Why not pair him up with Terrio? Johns could be a hit or miss co-writer, but my faith is strong in Affleck doing a good job with it.

The best director since Nolan to take on a superhero. Batman deserves no less.

@MisterSuperior Terrio won an Oscar with Argo, but that is still his only film; still have to see how BvS and JL plays out. Johns could be hit or miss, but he knows his shit and I'm sure they'll go through another draft or two like most Hollywood blockbusters.

Why Johns? Johns doesn't have a Batman run. His Earth One books are good but way too realistic.

Get Scott Snyder or Dini. People who've actually written great Batman stories who aren't insane or have became terrible writers.

I have to assume this film hits theaters in July 2018, a month that Warner Bros. has dominated and has used for all their blockbusters, especially Batman.

I'm not bashing Johns' writing in any way as he's done some great stuff for Arrow and The Flash, but moving from television to film is pretty big and one that could make him hit-or-miss.

And if you're not aware of Terrio's work, he had worked on television too with an episode on Damages.

@webhead125 LIVE BY NIGHT is a [frick]ing awesome novel and you should read it. He already pushed that back for Batman v Superman, LET THE MEN DO OTHER FILMS :o

@MisterSuperior I've heard the first two seasons of DAMAGES are pretty good, and I do love me some Rose Byrne. I'l ldefinitely check out that show in the future.

And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see another writer (if not Affleck) do another polish once the first draft is submitted.

There's also the fact that Johns's favorite superhero is the Flash and has written great Flash stories.

Honestly they should have Johns involved writing a Superman film.

This is still great news Ben will write and direct though.

I hope Snyder is involved and they use Riddler. Johns's Riddler was so weak in Earth one Vol 2. Zero backstory or anything interesting about him. The riddles were also really [frick]ing easy.

Use Zero Year Riddler.

@LEVITIKUZ

If WB could have given Johns maybe a smaller-budget CBM to do beforehand and work his way up to prove if he's a good director, I'd love to have see him direct a Flash movie because he definitely really loves that character. But this is definitely not losing any interest because you have a fantastic director behind a film who may be the best Batman on film to date.

@Reasonnnn

I'm thinking those two will work on some drafts, but Affleck will write the final draft and make sure it's for sure polished enough to use that. I have a lot of faith in Affleck's abilities as a writer and director for sure.
