Legendary Cinematographer Takes Aim At Oscars "Snobbery" After THE BATMAN Was Snubbed By Academy

Cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) has taken aim at the Academy for what he argues is their bias against superhero movies after The Batman's director of photography was snubbed...

Sir Roger Deakins is a legendary cinematographer who has lent his talents to movies like The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, Skyfall, Blade Runner 2049, and 1917, with the latter two earning him well-deserved Academy Awards.

He was even nominated at this past weekend's ceremony for his work on Empire of Light, and while he didn't pick up another Oscar, Deakins also didn't shy away from criticising the Academy prior to the show taking place. In fact, he went so far as to argue that the year's "best cinematography hasn’t been nominated."

The movie he's talking about? The Batman

"It’s The Batman. That’s the best work in my view," he tells Deadline, adding that Greig Fraser's "extraordinary" work should have made him a contender. As for why he believes it was overlooked, Deakins adds: "The reason it wasn’t is pure and simple: snobbery. There’s this unfair tendency to avoid the Marvel universe and the other popular universes."

He'd also go on to highlight Claudio Miranda, Top Gun: Maverick's director of photography "[as] another one that was shut out...It comes down to the work. Good work is good work whatever the genre."

The Batman was released to rave reviews last year, but appeared to be largely forgotten in the months that followed. There's also been a fair bit of upset surrounding the decision to snub Michael Giacchino's breathtaking score and while the movie wasn't necessarily "Best Picture" material, we can surely all agree it was better than Avatar: The Way of Water

Unfortunately, the Academy's apparent dislike of superhero movies looks set to continue, and many fans on social media continue to rage over the fact Jamie Lee Curtis took home the "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar in place of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett.

Do you think The Batman deserved a little more recognition at the Oscars?

Good Work is Good Work

Regardless of genre

@Scripturepoetic - The oscars is just an over-inflated industry awards show like any other, equally as important as the fish/meatpacking industry awards. Or the porn industry awards.

The Batman did have great cinematography, and so did Top Gun Maverick. Regardless they got a nomination or not, I think it's still something to be proud of.

He is right. The Batman is one of the best looking CBMs ever. Especially the moody shots were a thing of beauty.

The Oscars are pretty much worthless at this point. They only matter to Hollywood insiders who like to stroke each other.

That being said The Batman wasn’t all that great. At first I thought so but when it comes to rewatchability I haven’t felt the need to watch it again. I’d watch Batman Begins, Gael Knight and Batman (1989) a dozen times before I feel the need to watch The Batman again.

@TyrantBossMedia - I like the Batman but I agree on it not having any rewatchability, the cast was the best part.

This is the same Academy that gave the BP Oscar to Shakespeare in Love, didn’t give the visiual effects award to the Planet of the Apes trilogy and Infinity War and this year gave the award to the “weakest” nominee for Supporting Actress. And I could go on… So, no surprise.

While I was impressed with the Cinematography and score, I am not ready to say it was the best. There were other snubs including the Norseman for cinematography.

@Forthas - everyone has an opinion but Deakins is one of the greats. His depth of understanding is so much deeper than almost anyone else on the planet that really whatever any of us think means squat.

@Vision85 - Well obviously not since OTHER people who work in the industry did not agree with him.

Both Top Gun and The Batman should have been nominated over most of those other contenders. Though All Quiet On The Western front was an amazing looking movie and I don’t mind it winning.

When Avatar 1 got nominated for BP I really stopped caring about the Oscars.

@X75 - say what you want about Avatar, it became the highest grossing film by a significant margin, was extremely well liked by the general audience and for 2009 was a MASSIVE leap forward in vfx technology. Was it one of my favorite movies of the year? Not really. But it absolutely deserved that nomination.

@MrDandy - I agree, but for a Best Picture, you’d expect a movie with a good (and original) story.

The only excuse the academy has for not recognizing this, is that they value technical achievements over creative ones. Maybe they just don't appreciate the use of the vintage detuned lenses that Fraser used on this. Still, Fraser won best cinematography the year before so it's not like he doesn't know how to do the technical side of things.

MrDandy - 3/15/2023, 12:13 PM
@HAILHYDRA - I think that Deakins is right in this case and it was likely a genre bias. If they really valued technical achievements then they would have Nominated Top Gun which had to invent cameras and special riggings for the dogfight sequences.
