THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Isn't Rushing To Introduce Superman And Wants To Continue Focusing On Gotham

The Batman director Matt Reeves has explained why he isn't rushing to introduce Superman in his "Batverse," and expresses a greater desire to keep the spotlight on Gotham City and its heroes and villains.

The Batman looks set to introduce a new "Batverse," while over in what's become known as the DC Extended Universe, Michael Keaton will once again be donning the Cape and Cowl. Even though that arguably gives fans the best of both worlds (literally), there are many who would love to see what Matt Reeves' grounded take on those Justice League characters would look like.

Heading down that route might diminish what the filmmaker is going for by taking a deep dive into Gotham City across film and television. That's something Reeves emphasised during a recent interview with Collider when they asked if the Man of Steel could enter his "Batverse."

"It's a high wire act to do a Batman movie, right? The last thing I wanted to do was come in there and feel like I had to do something with the highest degree of difficulty and then also find the ways that it connects to everything else. My thing was, from the beginning, I said, 'Look, I think it's enough to try and just do a Batverse, to do a Batman movie,' and that that's where this begins."

"I suppose it's not impossible to believe that somewhere down the line they could connect to something else, but that was not my interest in this, and it's not my interest in what we would do in follow-ups at the moment, either," he continued. "There are a lot of great characters in the Gotham world and so the idea of leaning into that, that's really my interest right now."

"If suddenly in the Batman world, you discovered that there was an alien that was Superman, there'd be a lot of shock. I mean, people would have to say, oh my God, and maybe that would be the one fantastical element. But to be honest with you, that is not the intention at this point, to figure out how to make that come. I think if that challenge ever presents itself, it would be an exciting one to explore, but I'd have to try and do it through this lens."

It's fascinating to get this sort of insight from Reeves, and it's clear throwing Superman into this world is far from a priority for Reeves. If Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was any indication, the Caped Crusader and Man of Tomorrow sharing the screen isn't always necessarily what's best for these characters and, in the grounded world of The Batman, there may be no room for Kal-El.

There is, however, a good chance we see more characters from the Dark Knight's world show up in the franchise. Robert Pattinson has expressed interest in Robin, though there's no word on what Reeves thinks of potentially adding the Boy Wonder to the world he's creating here.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4. Check out what producer Dylan Clark had to say about establishing this "Batverse" outside of the DCEU in the player below:

KC Walsh of GWW made it sound like this isn’t the case….

But I believe they’re not going to rush him here if he is brought in.

I appreciate his honesty, I definitely think if they flesh out this Batman to be independently a genius, along with a possible use of MacGuffin in adding Lucius Fox to speed up some technical advancements within this Batman world, introducing an Alien like Superman could work.

The last 10 years have proven that if someone isn't both enthusiastic about Superman and unashamed of Superman, the results going to be less than ideal. I ding Reeves for seemingly being averse to the supernatural but at the end of the day that's better than him trying to cook a meal he'd never want to even taste

Tbh I just want WB to do what they did with Matt Reeves and Batman and have a great director who has a strong vision and loves and respects the character and their world...and just do that with Superman; that's all I want now tbh (and David Corenswet as Superman obviously lol).

@Superspecialawesomeguy - I say get the director with unabashed love for the Man of Tomorrow, set it in the 50s with Corenswet and away we go

@Superspecialawesomeguy - same. I also love how much faith we have in this film that we already want this creator driven vision to transfer to another character lol

@McMurdo - Bro someone on here brought up Jeff Nichols (who did Take Shelter, Mud and Loving) as a potential Superman director and now I can't think of anyone else better to direct it tbh.

This is refreshing to hear for a change. Not every movies has to be crammed with a bunch of other superheros and connected to other movies.

I think we are finally seeing BvS's legacy: Warner learned all they DONT have to do with these characters.

I can imagine Lex Luthor in Reeves' Bat-Universe. Lex Luthor could be a man similar to Stephen Hawking. He has formulated the "Superman" theory. Lex's "Superman" is similar to da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.

I still say have the Pattinson version be retconned into the dceu with Flashpoint. I think it'd be a cool ending where Barry thinks he fixed everything, rushes over to the batcave only to see Pattinson in the basket asking "who the f@$$ are you?" Then boom. You don't have to worry about establishing anything because the flash, wonder woman, aquaman, and Shazam will already be established and you can introduce a new superman down the line.

Good. It's called The Batman. Not Batman/Superman.

You know.....

As much as I loved the idea of Superman taking on The Dark Knight as a follow up to Man of Steel, I see now in hindsight why that move made a shit second Superman movie.

But on the flip side, having The Batman try to take down Superman from Batmans perspective might make a really fun Batman film. Obviously now that BvS exists it will never happen, but it could be fun if done well.

But I absolutely want them to remain focused on the Bat world.

I think it would be dope to get a James Gunn style partnership with a director willing to go between film and an HBOmax series, hire an actor to play Bruce that's willing to dedicate to playing Batman for a couple seasons of a show (8 episode seasons) and for 3 feature films... so you start this with a solo Batman film the level of The Batman, then use your film quality suit and props on the show where you introduce Robin in season 1. Then film the second movie where Robin's suit gets a film quality upgrade and we get a dope Batman and Robin movie that's had time to set up Dick Grayson properly before hand so we car about the character before they break up at the end of the second film. Then take the second movies suits and props into season 2 of the show and introduce Dick becoming Nightwing, Batgirl showing up in Gotham and Bruce recruiting Jason. The 3rd film would be The Red Hood arc with Joker killing Jason in the beginning. Season 3 of the show would be a Red Hood redemption arc and joining the Bat family but the season ends with Barbra getting shot my Joker and becoming paralyzed. Since the 3rd Batman movie is done, the next film would be a Birds of Prey movie to introduce those characters to Gotham and they would also join the Batfamily show for the final season which would end with Bruce retiring but hinting that a Batman Beyond show in the future.
