THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves On How The Movie Deals With The Hero's Origin And Gotham's Corruption

With Matt Reeves currently doing the rounds to promote his new sci-fi series Tales From the Loop, he's had a lot to say about his work on The Batman. While you might think that taking charge of the Caped Crusader's next solo outing is a daunting task for the filmmaker, he ultimately approached the DC Comics adaptation like any other project he's worked on.

"I’m going to pitch the version of Batman that I would do, which is going to have a humanist bent," he explained, reflecting on the build up to him landing the job. "And who knows if they’ll have any interest? If they don’t, then I won’t do it. And that’ll be okay. I was really lucky that they said yes.”

As for how that "humanist bent" will affect The Batman, Reeves elaborated on his place for the hero.

"I wanted to do not an origin tale, but a tale that would still acknowledge his origins, in that it formed who he is. Like this guy, he’s majorly struggling, and this is how he’s trying to rise above that struggle. But that doesn’t mean that he even fully understands, you know. It’s that whole idea of the shadow self and what’s driving you, and how much of that you can incorporate, and how much of it you’re doing that you’re unaware of."

"There’s something in there that feels very psychological, very emotional, and it felt like there was a way of exploring that along with the corruption in this place, Gotham," Reeves continued. "That feels very current. I think it always does. There’s almost no time when you can’t do a story about corruption. But today, it still seems incredibly resonant and maybe, from my perspective, maybe more so than maybe at other time."

So, while we won't be seeing the same old origin story, this "Year Two" tale is clearly going to reference that and build on it in a way that makes Bruce Wayne an even more interesting character.

As for exploring the corruption in Gotham City, that's likely a reference to characters like The Penguin and Carmine Falcone, two gangsters who use the city for their own nefarious purposes. Clearly, Reeves plans on touching on a lot of real-life issues with those particular stories.

Man this movie sounds right up my alley. I mean I was going to see it regardless but this particular take on Batman just sounds/looks awesome to me

I think Matt Reeves is a very talented filmmaker

I think he probably has some great ideas for Batman

I wish he didn't set his movie during the second half of Batman Begins when there's like.......decades of untapped Batman potential out there

@TheJustinHammer - I like how I can be a huge Batman fan for my entire life and yet regularly get accused of being biased against DC movies that are regularly "meh" at best.

The logic definitely checks out

@OmegaDaGrodd -
It's guys like you who should be pointing out the mediocre to bad nature of some of these films. I hope this is good. Unfortunately there is no real time continuuity with these things, which would be better. The world needs good Batman movies.

@OmegaDaGrodd - Spiderman has ten origin movies by now. But when batman discovers it's origins twice, it's a ripoff.

@Goldboink -

I don't think this is going to be "bad" per se, I just think it's kinda boring to go through the full life cycle of Batman from Nolan, then we jump into the DKR old bats in BvS and then 5 years later we're right back to origin stories in the next one.

That's without even touching on the costume

@SaoriseRonan -
And that would be twice we saw Spiderman origins. Still, Batman doesn't need an origin story. He is an icon at this point.

It's a rudderless ship over there at the WB. No overarching plan. Heck, they made money on all of those bad movies just because of the name.

@Goldboink - Reeves specifically says he didn't want to do an origin story in the quote. I don't get how this is comparable at all to Sony making a 2 hour origin reboot

God, I can't wait to see Reeve's take on this.

Hes a great director, I thought it was sad that his Apes movies didn't get the awards recognition or financial success they deserved.

I'm glad hes starting off with villains Riddler and Penguin, I'm curious which other villains he'd tackle. Perhaps Hugo Strange?

I also am so pumped for more joker tbh. I know some people are hoping he doesn't bring him in, but honestly, Batman needs a Joker. Its his opposite, the yin to his yang.

@DannRamm113 - Oh man, I can't believe he got Paul Dano for Riddler. That's such cool casting that I never thought of, probably the thing I'm most excited for with this movie.

@DannRamm113 - The relationship between Professor Strange and Bruce Wayne can be very interesting. Strange has to see Bruce's damaged mind and dig deeper and deeper. A dissection of Bruce's mind.

A perfect Batman movie for me would have the unique world of the Burton films mixed with the depth and sophistication of the Nolan films. I can’t wait to see what Reeves and company have in store.

Is this another Spider-Man Homecoming situation where they remain vague on the specific trauma that is supposed to be the core motivation for the character?

@TheUnconformed - Maybe that happened in the cancelled Aronofsky version, where Alfred was a mechanic named Big Al

@KnifeWasTooSlow - I thought Joker was the successor to that pitch, especially since Phoenix was Aronofsky's top choice for Batman

This may sound blasphemous to some....

But this film is sounding more and more like the Batman Begins sequel I originally wanted.
