THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Confirms THE PENGUIN's Episode Count On HBO Max

Despite the massive changes being made to the DCU by Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios, Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise will continue. We don't know whether the filmmaker's ambitious plan for several villain-led HBO Max TV shows will come to fruition, but The Batman II has been confirmed, as has The Penguin.

The latter begins production this year and will see Colin Farrell reprise his role as "Oz" to fill in some of the gaps between The Batman movies as his villain rises to power in Gotham City's underworld.

During a recent interview with Variety, Farrell fielded a couple of questions about the series, confirming The Penguin's episode count. "It’s going to be an eight-part thing," the Irish actor says. "Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed."

"Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second [Batman] feature will pick up where the HBO show will end."

Reeves is thought to be intent on at least making a trilogy of movies, and despite that big Joker tease, we can't help but wonder whether the idea is to establish The Penguin as Batman's real big bad. Whatever the case may be, with DC Studios developing The Brave and the Bold, it will be interesting seeing how these separate franchises complement each other.

As for The Penguin, it sounds like a series with a lot of potential and we're expecting at least a cameo appearance from Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight somewhere in those eight episodes.

The Batman II is set to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025. The Penguin, meanwhile, will likely premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2024.

Not looking forward to the Batman Vs. Batman flame wars in 2025/26.

Yes we can love both, just like we can love both Marvel and DC, but that doesn't stop the Marvel Vs. DC flame wars, does it?

I'm going to watch everything. But this is really like throwing down the gauntlet for which one we favor.

I loved The Batman. I chose The Batman over the DCEU and all other versions of DC from the moment we started hearing and seeing things from it and about it. Because the "main" universe wasn't really a main universe. It was all over the place and The Batman was a good raft to climb aboard in a tumultuous sea.

But now James Gunn has delivered us from the wreckage. The Batman has nothing to do with his salvation. It's just another Elseworlds now.

So I'm looking forward to it and I'll watch it and love it and come on here and tell you all why I think it's brilliant and how much I love it, because I know it'll be well done...
...but I am no longer invested in it, like I am invested in DC Studios Chapter One and Beyond. I don't care who the villain is. What if Mr. Freeze was an everyday joe? Don't care.

So I suppose I am serving notice to Matt Reeves. I give you back your sword. I'm fighting for another universe now, come the flame wars, we will probably be on opposite sides of the battlefield.

If it's just "Did you think the Batman part II was good?"
I'll be like "Good it was a masterpiece and probably deserves a duffel bag full of Oscars!"
But when it comes to Batman Vs. Batman? I'm siding with the Brave and the Bold.

@ObserverIO - That's funny, I'm like the opposite of you. I liked Batfleck a lot in the Snydercut JL movie and would like more of that one. I didn't like him in the Bat vs Supe movie so that surprised me. I didn't enjoy The Batman at all, just felt like a lesser version of Nolan's stuff to me and The Riddler did nothing for me so I was bored. But now a younger Batman without Damian seems more interesting to me. I don't even hate Damian like most I just don't find him that interesting and if I had the choice, which I guess I do, I'll choose the Damianless story.

@WarMonkey - You've had the complete opposite journey, lol.

I'd take Damien over Don Mitchell Jr. any day though.
(first shots fired for the coming flame war hehe)

I'll watch it. Liked enough about Batman 1 to come back for more.

Having 2 separate Batmans running loose in 2-3 years is a TERRIBLE idea.

Reeves being insistent not to have his Batman join the bigger DCU picture is a really bad idea. What a hardhead he is. I'd love to see Pattinson play Batman for the next decade. He'd fit right in with a new Superman.

@DocSpock - I dont think Pattinson is interested to be tied to a comic universe for a decade. Look at the sad filmography of Robert Downey Jr. since he became Iron Man. 15 years of wasted talent. Rob wouldnt do it.

As much as I loved The Batman and am looking forward to the sequel, I think THIS show is what I'm most excited for next to be set in this Reeves universe. Farrell was electric every time he was on screen as Penguin, can't wait for more of it.
