We've heard lots of chatter about The Batman being the first chapter in a new trilogy, but nothing has been confirmed and a sequel could hinge on the critical and commercial response to this first instalment. Something tells us the movie won't struggle too much in that respect, while Warner Bros. is clearly confident in its chances of success seeing as two HBO Max spinoffs are in development.
The first will focus on the Gotham City Police Department, while the second is expected to follow Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot, presumably as he continues his transformation into The Penguin.
Talking to Games Radar, Robert Pattinson admitted that he struggles to imagine a follow-up to The Batman. "When I saw it the first time, even from the first shot, it does feel incredibly different, tonally, to the other movies," he explains. "And it’s so strange, and kind of...it’s sad, and quite touching."
"It’s a really, really unusual Batman story, and it almost seems harder for me to imagine it being a series afterwards. I mean, they always have that little bit at the end, that’s like: ‘...and coming up!’ But other than that, it feels strangely personal. I think people will be shocked at how different it is."
So, we're clearly getting some sort of tease at the end of the movie. If you've been keeping an eye on the rumour mill, you'll know there's a good chance that could involve a certain Clown Prince of Crime!
Someone who is a little more positive about the future, however, is Zoe Kravitz. "To see a person like Selina really get in touch with her power and become Catwoman? That’s a journey that I’m really interested in exploring," she confirmed. "We haven’t quite seen that yet. We usually meet Catwoman, and it’s either a very quick transformation – an overnight thing – or she’s already there."
"And so to find the emotional journey that brings her to the place where she is making the choice to be this person, is what I’m really excited about," the actress concluded, teasing what sounds like a slow burn approach to telling Selina Kyle's story in this corner of the DCEU Multiverse.
The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.
