THE BATMAN Star Zoë Kravitz Reveals The Movie's Unique Take On Selina Kyle's "Claws"

It's clear Matt Reeves' The Batman will deliver a grounded take on Gotham City, and star Zoë Kravitz has now explained how she approached Catwoman's "claws" in a realistic way. Find more details here...

The latest trailer for The Batman was met with an overwhelmingly positive response online, and it's not hard to see why. Matt Reeves' take on the World's Greatest Detective is shaping up to be as big a game-changer for the franchise as Batman Begins in 2005, and with what appears to be an R-Rated take on the Dark Knight, this movie definitely feels like something new from DC.

Of course, a grounded take on Batman means some liberties will be taken with the source material, which is definitely the case with Catwoman. It's worth noting that we're getting a Selina Kyle at a very early stage in her vigilante career, but actress Zoë Kravitz found a way to incorporate the character's "claws" in a realistic way.

"We developed the costume together as a team, and actually, the nails weren't originally planned," Kravitz tells BuzzFeed of the "claws" fans have spotted Selina rocking in the latest trailer (see below). "We shot two months before quarantine and everything shut down, so in that time, I started to grow my nails out because we couldn't get manicures and then I had this idea to take it further."

"So I called Matt and was like, 'I have this idea, we should do crazy, bitchy, wonderful scary nails that looked like claws.' No nail polish on them, so they looked more like claws, and we were able to incorporate it last minute...so learning how to shoot a gun without breaking a nail was a new skill I developed [Laughs]."

It's a unique way to incorporate Catwoman's claws in The Batman, and it should be interesting to see whether these nails factor into any of the movie's fight scenes. Assuming Selina dons a more comic accurate costume down the line, then we could obviously see her using some actual claws, but an action figure has already confirmed she'll use her trademark whip in this movie.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.
