THE BATMAN Star Zoë Kravitz Reveals The Movie's Unique Take On Selina Kyle's "Claws"

It's clear Matt Reeves' The Batman will deliver a grounded take on Gotham City, and star Zoë Kravitz has now explained how she approached Catwoman's "claws" in a realistic way. Find more details here...

The latest trailer for The Batman was met with an overwhelmingly positive response online, and it's not hard to see why. Matt Reeves' take on the World's Greatest Detective is shaping up to be as big a game-changer for the franchise as Batman Begins in 2005, and with what appears to be an R-Rated take on the Dark Knight, this movie definitely feels like something new from DC.

Of course, a grounded take on Batman means some liberties will be taken with the source material, which is definitely the case with Catwoman. It's worth noting that we're getting a Selina Kyle at a very early stage in her vigilante career, but actress Zoë Kravitz found a way to incorporate the character's "claws" in a realistic way.

"We developed the costume together as a team, and actually, the nails weren't originally planned," Kravitz tells BuzzFeed of the "claws" fans have spotted Selina rocking in the latest trailer (see below). "We shot two months before quarantine and everything shut down, so in that time, I started to grow my nails out because we couldn't get manicures and then I had this idea to take it further."

"So I called Matt and was like, 'I have this idea, we should do crazy, bitchy, wonderful scary nails that looked like claws.' No nail polish on them, so they looked more like claws, and we were able to incorporate it last minute...so learning how to shoot a gun without breaking a nail was a new skill I developed [Laughs]."

It's a unique way to incorporate Catwoman's claws in The Batman, and it should be interesting to see whether these nails factor into any of the movie's fight scenes. Assuming Selina dons a more comic accurate costume down the line, then we could obviously see her using some actual claws, but an action figure has already confirmed she'll use her trademark whip in this movie.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.

I love it when directors are open to suggestions from the cast.

This film might be special!

Also I hear the budget is 100 million.... like wtf this film looks so good and it's half the cost of films like MOS, black widow etc.

CGI must be super expensive (like more than I realised).

@TheHumanSpider2

No actor starts out making 20 mil for a superhero flick. Unless you're Jack Nicholson or at this point in time, probably Leo DiCaprio.

@KWilly - Unless WB got him locked into a 3 movie deal, given how that's the industry standard these days for franchises.

Selina using guns? again?
Nitpicks aside, Zoe look, by far, like the most comic accurare live action Catwoman we ever got, and I liked Anne (Michelle...I dont know who she was playing).

@TheHumanSpider2 - Catwoman's never been anti-guns in the comics. So in a grounded adaptation, she'd absolutely use a gun to defend herself.

I'm not sure this makes much sense for a burgler, or even just for someone throwing a punch. She better not ball her fist for a single fight scene, she better have swipe attacks for her hands then just kick a lot.

Cool enough.

I like about everything they’re doing with her except the mask. Idk what it is but the big open eyehole thing doesn’t look good to me. Oh well, won’t ruin the movie.

"Selina Kyle at a very early stage in her vigilante career". For decades now, I've been wanting DC to start pushing Catwoman harder as a vigilante/antihero, and really distancing her from the villain category. Hathaway's Catwoman was a big step in that direction. Hopefully Zoë will have a lot more opportunities, to redefine Catwoman for a new generation. Batman sharing some of his massive spotlight with her, is long overdue.

I am INFINITELY hyped about this movie! And for me it's all about Selina Kyle/Catwoman. That they're FINALLY spending some time fleshing out her character and making her believable and badass and 3-dimensional has got me SUPER excited for this movie! That being said I will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart for this:

and this:
