THE BATMAN's Gotham City Is Going To Look Unlike Anything We've Seen On The Big Screen Before

Talking during this weekend's DC FanDome, The Batman director Matt Reeves explained how he's bringing Gotham City to life in the reboot, and it sounds unlike anything we've seen on the big screen before...

Gotham is obviously a huge part of the Batman mythos, and every filmmaker has had a different take on the crime-ridden city. Now, all eyes are on director Matt Reeves to see what he brings to the table in The Batman, and it sounds like we can expect a unique take on Gotham when the movie is released next October.

"The nature of what this place is and the history of it is critically important to our story," Reeves said during DC FanDome on Saturday "One of the things that I really wanted to do because it is the center of the story, especially the history of corruption in the city, was I wanted to present it in a way that was really fleshed out. I wanted it to feel like an American city you'd never been to."

"The Burton one had very, very theatrical, beautiful, beautiful sets, and Nolan had the version that he created in Batman Begins, and that was a particular thing and then parts of Chicago and parts of Pittsburgh. What we're trying to do is create a version of it that you haven't seen before."

It was then that Reeves spoke about the benefit of shooting The Batman in the UK, after explaining that it would be too obvious to use New York City's Times Square as Gotham Square ( fans would realise that the Big Apple is doubling for the fictional location).

"The idea is to go to Liverpool," the filmmaker said of the English city, "where there's all the foundation of the Gothic architecture, and then add all of the more modern structures in through CG, but in a way that when you see the movie, now that I've blown it, of course, I've told you what it is, but you'll be like, 'Hey! Where's that city? Where do they shoot?' and so, the aspect of Gotham and realizing it has been for me one of the great pleasures in getting to mount the movie."

Clearly, Reeves has some very interesting and exciting ideas for Gotham City, and the trailer pointed to him delivering a dark new take on the iconic comic book location. With shooting only around 30% of the way finished, it could be a while before we actually get to see what this version looks like.

@dracula - Fingers crossed the WB Execs don’t have a say in the final product for any of these.

@ChangAlang - Well its safe to say these movies are safe, their directors have proven themselves and bankable names. Hopefully when we get some new characters and directors, they dont mess it up

@ChangAlang - Although honestly, yeah they were responsible for Sucide Squad and justice league's crap quality, but they probably would have been crap either way considering Ayer was basically working off of a first draft and its Zack Snyder

And still no Superman :(

@SnideCut - Hopefully one day. Really Cavil was a good choice problem was the script, just as Gal and Jason have shown, but im fine with getting a new superman, no need to wait for a guy who doesnt even have a contract with them anymore

@dracula - As a Superman fan, this whole fandome thing and it's overt Batman focus has been depressing to say the least. Well, atleast the Man of Tomorrow animated movie was awesome. Why they can't just do that but in live-action, is beyond me.

@SnideCut - You know, after Star Wars 9, we are all unsure of Abrams, but I think he is someone who could bring Superman back, maybe not as director, but in some creative position

@dracula - now let's just hope Snyder doesn't get the keys to any room in the kingdom.

@RageDriver2401 - please if the footage wasnt already there, this cut would have never happened, now he and his cult have nothing to bully the studio with

@ChangAlang - WB Execs discovered the Multiverse recently and dont wanna let it go it seems. Hopefully that results in more individual (and thus better) movies

@dracula - I actually think he could do Superman really well actually. I loved Super 8 and his work on Star Trek , as unpopular an opinion as it may be. The dude's films have heart. That's something a Superman movie desperately needs. Not another DBZ knockoff, but a movie that focuses on the 'Man' instead of the 'Super'.

I feel like the best live action iteration of Gotham... Was Gotham. It truly looked like the city jumped off the page of the comic book.

Filming in NYC will do that for ya. But I like how this movie is gonna have some Liverpool shots.

@KWilly - yes, the way it was lit and the cgi touches, made it feel straight out of a comic

@KWilly - I liked Batman Begins too. Although less comic book-y, it felt like what Gotham City could be like. Too bad they switched out Chicago for New York in the Rises
