THE BATMAN: Barry Keoghan's Mystery Character Revealed As The Actor Reacts To Film's Release - SPOILERS

Speculation has run rampant about Barry Keoghan's mystery role in The Batman for months, and as the actor reacts to his presence in the film, we're breaking down his character and what might come next!

The Batman is now playing in theaters across the globe, and Matt Reeves' take on Gotham City promises to leave fans with lots to talk about over the coming weeks and months.

The film sets the stage for a sequel and a couple of spinoffs, but the biggest tease for this Batverse's future arrives during the final act. What you may be wondering is what that has to do with Eternals star Barry Keoghan. He's been attached to The Batman from early on, with Warner Bros. and the trades reporting that he would take on the role of Officer Stanley Merkel.

Jim Gordon's original partner in the comics, that role made sense for the actor; set photos even appeared to show him interacting with Bruce Wayne at the Mayor's funeral.

However, the truth about Keoghan's role in The Batman is a little more complicated...and exciting!

The Joke's On Us

Keoghan isn't Officer Merkel, he's The Joker. Credited as "Unseen Arkham Prisoner," he first appears when a distraught Riddler hears a friendly voice reach out to him from the cell next door. Congratulating Edward Nashton for the pain and madness he's unleashed on Gotham City, it sounds an awful lot like this mysterious Arkham State Hospital inmate is planning a breakout.

Upon closer inspection, we catch a glimpse of a scarred, twisted smile, the white face, and green hair. Teasing an idea to get out of the confines of this hospital with The Riddler by his side, a terrifying laugh rings out within Arkham and the stage is set for The Joker to make his presence felt.

This is a huge role for Keoghan, but was all that talk of Officer Stanley Merkel just a way to keep his part a secret or something more meaningful? Do we have a theory for you...

An Intriguing Theory

IMHCATANN2022001-Cov-1

It's been confirmed that one of The Batman spinoffs coming to HBO Max will follow a corrupt cop during the Caped Crusader's first year in Gotham City. Since then, director Matt Reeves has said it will connect to Arkham, and we have a feeling Keoghan is going to be the lead in that show.

While the Clown Prince of Crime's origin story was kept ambiguous for decades, that changed in recent years. 2019's Joker was all about how he became the villain we all know from the comics, so what if Jim Gordon's partner somehow descends into madness and becomes The Joker?

Merkel could be a dirty cop who falls in with the Red Hood Gang, for example, and ultimately takes a beating from the Dark Knight that results in the scars on his face and a dip in chemicals that give him his unique appearance. We have a feeling this theory could pan out, so stay tuned!

Wasn't sold on him.

I would be a bit turned off if that was the origin of the Joker. It then means he is motivated by petty revenge. I prefer a Joker who entire existence is trying to make a statement to the world and it contradicts the symbol that Batman wants to be and that naturally brings him into conflict with the Joker. It is not a personal difference but a philosophical one that plays out on the streets of Gotham in deadly and explosive ways. The more I think about this film the more its logic begins to break down and its characters are underwhelming.

He really is an inspired choice for Joker and really looking forward to seeing how this will all play out.

Killing Of A Sacred Deer is proof alone as to how brilliant he can be in the role.

I think Keoghan could be great in the role and I’m intrigued to see where we go from here, but that scene didn’t really do it for me. It felt like generic “Joker is CRAZY” and I think that’s sort of a boring direction to go with these movies. Something closer to Ledger’s emotionally disturbed dude performing insanity is way more interesting to me and I think Keoghan could make that something utterly creepy.

As much as i liked that scene i was hoping we could take a break from Joker for a while. There are other villains to explore in future movies

This look would be perfect for Barry Keoghan's Joker.

@Repian - that’s actually what his hair and smile look like, though I couldn’t tell color.

Not sure if this is real or not, but it looks pretty close to what I was able to see. He'll be fantastic! To the haters and doubters, watch Killing of a Sacred Deer. He can play a creepy dark and twisted villain without going overboard

Yawn. Found the film to be decidedly OK. Definitely felt the runtime and some of the performances didn't land for me. Hopefully the sequel will be better.

Out of all Batman villains, they chose the worst one. Professor Pyg is better villain than overrated Joker

Wasn’t a fan of the tease and not sold on him. His laugh sucked. And he’s a hell of an actor of course but what was displayed here didn’t inspire confidence. The scene felt like something the studio wanted. Nevertheless, really good movie.

Really didn't like the sequel tease with him and Riddler. Guy's a good actor, but I don't feel he's right for a Joker opposite Pattinson's Batman. That character deserves (needs) a break anyways. I think they could've cast him as a number of underused Batman villains and the result would've been better.

Were his face white and hair green? I really couldn’t tell with the lighting and the tinted window.

Not an actor I would have chosen for Joker… esp after the blah performance in The Eternals. Hope he’s good at least, ha!

That was honestly my least favorite scene in an otherwise great film.

It just didn't do it for me. Maybe it's because we've had so many Jokers in the last few years, but the laughing and dialogue felt uninspired.

I'm way more interested in Penguin for the sequel. Or someone out of left field, like The Ventriloquist and Scarface. Professor Pyg would also fit the tone incredibly well.

@SheepishOne - the laughing and dialogue felt lazy. Made me think they added the scene later on.
SheepishOne

@BlackBeltJones - Agreed. The dialogue was vague and disconnected from the plot enough, that it was obvious the scene was something they wanted to be able to add/cut quickly, based on test screenings.

Saw Batman last night. Thought it was excellent.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the Joker reveal at the end.

I'm glad he didn't steal focus from Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman but it felt weak introducing ANOTHER Joker especially after Joaquin Phoenix.

Barry Keoghan didn't feel particularly Joker esque and his lines felt kind of generic. He does have a creepy smile and granted we haven't really seen him prove himself as the Joker, but he's really the only actor who feels like a miscast. He was no Leto obviously but I feel the movie would have been better off without the tease.

I didn't like how he sounded. I know Barry is in almost in his 30's, but with him and Paul Dano at the end, it felt like two high schoolers role playing batman villains, and I liked Dano in every other scene.

Overall everyone gave great performances…except this one. I know it was dark and we didn’t see much but I really wasn’t feeling it. Hopefully it’s better when he gets onscreen.

Hated the joker tease. Thought it was forced and the laugh was awful. I'm interested but not sold😐

After absolutely loving this film, I have faith in Matt Reeves to get this right. I believe he delivered us a masterpiece - a superhero movie unlike anything we've seen before.

I think the best strategy would be Joker to lead a rogue gallery in Arkham Asylum against Batman as a slow build-up for the finale of the trilogy.

Watching Joker build up and manipulate a collection of villains that have each terrorized Batman/Gotham would be something we've never seen before on the big screen.

If Joker is able to control all of these powerful villains it will prove his rank as the ultimate big bad for the Batman.

It was definitely him there, despite being blurred by that bright oranged light of the sun coming out from his cell you can tell those characteristic features on his face, esp. in his hair.

And I admit that theory for the GCPD has potential.
