While many were expecting a Two-Face casting announcement this week, director Matt Reeves has surprised fans with the casting of another big DC Comics villain, just revealing, via
Twitter, that 2x Golden Globe-nominee John Turturro has joined the cast of his highly anticipated upcoming superhero adventure,
The Batman, as Gotham City crimelord Carmine Falcone.
Turturro joins an all-star cast headlined by Robert Pattinson (
The Lighthouse), who will star as the titular Dark Knight, and that also features Jeffrey Wright (
Westworld) as Commissioner James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz (
Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano (
There Will Be Blood) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Andy Serkis (
Black Panther) as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell (
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and newcomer Jayme Lawson in an undisclosed role.
It's believed that Two-Face is still one of the more major roles left to be cast, so we should get news on that front much sooner rather than later, but with the confirmation of Falcone, it seems there may be some supporting players that get finalized before Reeves and company find their Harvey Dent, who may have a larger role to play in this film (especially if it adapts
The Long Halloween) and/or in any potential sequels down the line.
Matt Reeves (
War for the Planet of the Apes) is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin (
Little Fish). Production is expected to commence at the end of 2019 or early 2020.
The Batman hits theaters June 25, 2021.
