THE BATMAN: HBO Max Spinoff Series Loses Showrunner Terence Winter Due To "Creative Differences"

There was a lot of excitement over Boardwalk Empire's Terence Winter taking charge of the Gotham Central-inspired TV show coming to HBO Max, but he's now left the project due to "creative differences."

Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe is no stranger to "creative differences" (just look at how many directors The Flash movie has run through), but this news definitely hits hard.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that The Batman spinoff series - which is being produced under the working title of "Gotham Central" - has lost showrunner Terence Winter after he clashed with filmmaker Matt Reeves and producers over his vision for the HBO Max show.

Now, the hunt is on for a new showrunner to take charge of the series. There's no word on who that could be, but the fact that Winter was hired in the first place suggests the streaming service is looking for top tier talent.

The untitled spinoff was ordered straight to series back in July, and is being developed as a companion to The Batman movie that's now being released in theaters in 2022. Set during the Dark Knight's "Year One" in Gotham City, the show will take place from a Gotham City cop's point of view and, as Reeves explained, will tell the story of the "battle for his soul."

The Batman producer Dylan Clark, 6th & Idaho's Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan are executive producing, while Rafi Crohn is a co-executive producer on the project.

@tmp3 - I know this is awful news, Terence Winter is such a great showrunner, critically respected that it made me super excited for the series. This in film terms was like Nolan taking on Batman.. such a disappointment, this has happened way too much with DC/Warner Bros, it’s turned into a joke.

@tmp3 -
I hope they get someone who can match his talent. I nominate the True Detective Season 1 showrunners.

Matt Reeves is basically gonna be the Feige of Batman right now. What he says, goes. Not a big deal, they'll find someone else.

@KWilly - I'm still kinda pissed WB had us waiting for 4 years before the movie started shooting.

How far can they dilute the Bat product before it's just wallpaper? (Or some other paper?)

@BillyBatson1000 - I’m not sure, ask the comic book run that’s spanned for over the past 81 years.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - To clarify: the live action/animated Bat product.

@regularmovieguy - The hack behind Tim Burton's Dark Shadows and Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, and one of the head writers is Marc Guggenheim ([frick]ing lol). It's like they want it to fail.

@tmp3 - Marc Guggenheim was a writer on the 2011 GL film. Did they not learn from their mistakes?

@tmp3

I had no idea. I imagine it’s a lot easier to hire “yes men” than it is keep a creative like Terence Winter on board. Literally so [frick]ing bummed about this.

tmp3 - 11/17/2020, 7:46 AM
@regularmovieguy - Yeah. Especially since the main reason a DC TV show got so many Emmys a few months back was because of the work done by a big name show-runner. But why take risks when you can double down on CW bros and failed screen-writers? Yikes.

@tmp3 - Dude this sucks hard. I'm less excited now, unless they get someone on his level. GL is gonna be a dumpster fire

@Dredd97 - Exactly, Winter was SUCH a good get. Like, the kind of fanboy wish-list get. Real shame.
