THE BATMAN Promos Tease The Bat And Cat; Matt Reeves Compares The Dark Knight To James Bond

Two new promos for The Batman tease the Caped Crusader's "I'm Batman" moment, while director Matt Reeves reveals he wrote the movie with Robert Pattinson in mind, comparing the hero to...James Bond?!

The Batman has all the makings of a truly epic blockbuster, and all eyes are going to be on Robert Pattinson as he delivers what looks set to be a very unique take on Gotham City's Dark Knight.

During a recent interview with Movie Maker, director Matt Reeves revealed that he wrote the movie with the actor in mind while making an interesting comparison. "Batman is an amazing myth that has endured for over 80 years. And it’s because of that crazy mix. There’s a part of it that is just simply cool, right? He looks cool. He’s got a cool car. He’s got all the stuff. He’s like James Bond, I guess, in a certain way, right? But there’s also something very relatable to the pain that he’s gone through."

"And so that, for me, was how you ground it - those aspects are part of the story. And this story emphasizes those things," Reeves continues. "This story pulls those things out. So that’s why I was so excited about Robert Pattinson because he’s such a wonderful actor. And I knew that he would be able to go on that search with me for the depth and complexity of this character."

"In writing, from the beginning, I was imagining the character in my head. And I started watching movies of actors in the age range. And he just really kind of captivated me, and I started writing for him at a certain point. I had no idea if he ever would want to be in the movie."

With these comments come two new promos for The Batman featuring a few very brief snippets of never before seen footage, including the hero asking a crook if he knows his name (could this be his "I'm Batman" moment?). Honestly, this movie can't get here soon enough at this point!

The Batman finds the Caped Crusader in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

I'm really hopeful for what they might do with Bruce on an emotional level. As much as I like to see Batman in the bigger weirder DC stuff and I don't care as much about the gritty and grounded Batman-ing, it does seem to invite a closer examination of Bruce's inner life. And that's where I'd be happy to see a longer runtime play out.

As much as I enjoy the Nolan films for what they do well, I didn't much like how they approached Bruce. In seeking to humanize him, I feel like they made him a little too pathetic (wallowing in self-pity, delusional about Rachel, etc.).

Also, Pattinson's got this authentic vulnerability about him that just rang a bit hollow with Bale. I could believe either of those men might beat a dude into a coma with their bare hands (under the right circumstances), but if one of them is going to cry about it after, it's 100% Pattison.

Bale would probably ask for a second dude.

@Spock0Clock - Pattinson’s Bruce feels like he’s on the verge of exploding; so much anger and pain blistering under the surface and just barely being kept at bay. Like he really is on the line between breaking his own moral compass or not.
Also, the amount of emoting that he seems to be doing in the bat-suit so far is pretty incredible. Def. feels like he’s primed to be the best live action take so far

@Spock0Clock - agreed. I think its also overly simple to say Bruce's parents die so he dedicates himself to fighting crime in some sort of revenge/redemption component.

This kid had to have been pretty unstable before all of that. If they were to really get into the complexity of the character there would have to be a bigger underpinning to set up. That would be interesting to explore.

@Spock0Clock - When it comes to Batman portrayals, The more human the better as far as I'm concerned.

@WakandaTech - Isaac and Pattinson are both such good actors, hope they get good material to play off of. @blackbeltjones said that Pattinson reminded him of young Pacino and I think that Isaac’s another actor in that same wavelength rn

Everything about this movie sounds like it will be an expert psychological exploration on Bruce. More than any of the other films. We’ve always understood what makes Batman tick but it sounds like Reeves wants to really strip bare the mental and emotional underpinnings in a raw way; like never before.

The movie maker article is really really really good. I get that it’s a PR piece but it paints Reeves as someone so committed to getting this right that I’m somehow even more confident in the movie than I was before

His cape appears to be lacking the scalloped (bat like) edge along the bottom. So did Bale’s Batman. What gives? Why ignore that awesome detail?

DTor91 - 1/22/2022, 6:04 PM
@PerrinNation1 - I’ve been wondering about that too and we genuinely haven’t seen that since……Clooney.

Even Affleck’s skipped that for more of a tattered edged look. Was hoping the scalloped edges would be back here, but oh well I guess. Whether it happens in this movie or not, Pattinson will surely get a new suit eventually so here’s hoping details like that return.

@PerrinNation1 - probably because it doesn't translate well to film. I'm sure if they could make it work and fit the style, they would have. I doubt it was one of those "we didn't include it because we didn't think about it" things.
FleischerSupes
FleischerSupes - 1/22/2022, 8:22 PM
@PerrinNation1 - It looked fantastic in the Tim Burton films. Its like Superman's yellow S on the back of his cape. To me its essential to identifying the character.
PerrinNation1
PerrinNation1 - 1/23/2022, 6:32 AM
@Dabs - of course it translates well to film. Most of the time the cape (in action) is CGI. It can look however they want. It looked fine in all the Burton Batman movies (as FleischerSupes) stated) and even in the old Adam West series.

Feels like the Batman/Riddler plot is going to rock but that Batman/Catwoman stuff seems like it's from a different movie

I like that the more I see the suit, the more there's a noticeable grey/black difference in it. I thought at first it was pretty much all black or dark grey but the chest plate is definitely a grey and the cowl and cape are black. It's more subtle than the BvS batsuit, but the grey/black batsuit is there :-)/
