Who can we expect in Batman 3?

Who can we expect in Batman 3?

All we know is that on July 20, 2012 a group of actor will be portraying characters under the stewardship of Christopher Nolan. Everybody who saw Inception will recognise the names being linked and here is the roles I think they could play.

Firstly let's start off with what we already know about the very limited details regarding Batman 3.

Christian Bale will once again be reprising the role of Batman in what seems to be his last outing and will start the film at least being hunted down by the Police led by Com. Gordon who believe him to be a cop killer and the murderer of Harvey Dent.

Gary Oldman will once again reprise his role as Jim Gordon who will be tasked with leading the hunt for his friend and assosiate Batman who he knows to be innocent.

Michael Caine will be portraying Bruce Wayne's loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth who will be there to support Bruce in his war against crime and Morgan Freeman will be again returning as Lucius Fox, Bruce Wayne's CEO of Wayne Enterprises.

Now onto the unknown. There are 4 names that are currently hot on the lips of everybody and they are who I will focus on, all from Nolan's latest film Inception.

LEONARDO DiCAPRIO was the star of Inception and was immediately linked with Batman 3. There are 2 roles I can see "Leo" portraying on screen in Batman 3. Firstly is the role he was linked to originally, as the films lead villain Edward Nashton aka The Riddler. I believe that with somebody of Leo's talents could do something truly amazing with the character and definately rival Heath Ledger's Joker which is what Batman 3 needs. The second role I can see Leo portraying is Roman Sionis aka Black Mask. Now we don't know what villain will be used along with The Riddler but I could see Nolan using Black Mask as the third villain much like Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni were used in the previous films. The role as Black Mask I feel is more suited to Leo who could take the role and make it one of best things about Batman 3 and for me would be the best role for him in the film.

MARION COTILLARD also starred in Inception and has been linked VERY HEAVILY in recent days with the two roles that I can see appearing in this movie. The first role is as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman who's last screen appearance was in the 2004 solo movie Catwoman that had nothing to do with the Comic version. Somebody of Cotillard's talents could make Catwoman work and take the character closer to the comic version as a cat thief who comes into the path of the Riddler and is being chased by Black Mask. The second is as Talia al Ghul who comes to Gotham seeking revenge for the death of her father first film which would nicely tie the films together. Cotillard could equally take this character well and is somewhat close to the character she played in Inception which she played well.

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT is the main man on everybody's lips regarding a role in Batman 3. Every site across the internet has linked him with the role of Edward Nashton aka The Riddler. It has been reported so many times over and over that this seems like the most likely out of all of these. Reports claim that he was listed next to the Riddler on a Casting Grid that was seen. There seems to be many reports about this and I think that our Riddler is right here.

TOM HARDY is the last name and being british will most likely be portrayed as the villain. He is more likely to portraying a villain somebody like Black MaskTony Zucco, Hush or in my opinion, could play the Penguin and take that character into a new area of not an obese half bird man and really put his and Nolan's mark on the character.

To recap here are the roles simplified.

Leonardo DiCaprio: The Riddler and Black Mask
Marion Cotillard: Catwoman and Talia al Ghul
Joseph Gordon Levitt: The Riddler
Tom Hardy: Black Mask, Tony Zucco, Hush and Penguin

Let me know what you think below in the comments.

Leo - Great actor. I don't know if he's suitable for Riddler.(by the way it's Nigma not Nashton) For Black mask, it should be someone older who looks and sounds like he's been in the crime business for years.

Marion - Great actor. An okay choice for Catwoman. Great choice for Talia, love it.

Joseph - Great actor. Don't know if I can see him as Riddler.

Tom - Great actor. Definitely can see him playing Hush.

Great article man.

Well with your Black Mask news I can see it happening.

I'd like to think Nolan wouldn't use ALL of the actors from Inception.

I'm guessing Nolan will keep Hardy and Levitt, maybe Cotillarde for the interest.

@John Connor
I think Leo would be a better Black Mask.

As much as Nolan likes to work with the same actors, he also has a tendency to surprise the [frick] out of you with these Batman castings. Gary Oldman? Aaron Eckhart? Heath Ledger? Who saw any of those coming?
jbak368
jbak368 - 8/29/2010, 9:28 PM
Of course, he always turns out to be right. It's never what you expect, and it's always better than your idea.
jbak368
jbak368 - 8/29/2010, 9:35 PM
Also, Cotillard would be a much better Catwoman than Talia, although she would be good for both, but Catwoman is the character they should use. She's more important to Batman's character overall, throughout his history, and, despite the two films which already feature her, she's yet to have a definitive film representation (just like, Scarecrow, Two-Face, and Ra's were before Nolan, and the Riddler still is). You don't make a trilogy of Batman films and not include Selina Kyle. Talia was a B-character until recently.
jbak368
jbak368 - 8/29/2010, 9:41 PM
Also, Batman has villains that are very well known to the general public (and therefore have the capability to be a much bigger draw at the box office), and Talia al Ghul, Black Mask, and Bane are not among them. The Riddler and Catwoman are practically the only two major who villains who fit into Nolan's style that would work.

The next trilogy should escalate by taking things to a more sci-fi place, allowing the inclusion of first-tier villains excluded by Nolan's mobster movie realism, like Clay Face, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy. That might also be a good time to integrate Batman into a DC movie verse.
jbak368
jbak368 - 8/29/2010, 9:47 PM
At the same time, I think that a more fantastical trilogy shouldn't disregard Nolan's continuity (though I don't think that means you can't bring Two-Face back), it should just be an escalation from that universe. Bruce putting his intellect to the development of weapons and gadgets could produce real-world-yet-practically-sci-fi devices, and there's no reason the same progress wouldn't be happening in other places (by, say, scientists like Victor Fries).

Sorry for the rant. I'm new to the site. Should I have just made an article? This is practically as long as some of them.
jbak368
jbak368 - 8/29/2010, 9:59 PM
I don't think Nolan will bring Two-Face back, and while I sort of agree with (what I imagine) his reasons are, I'd still be okay with him changing his mind. However, even if Nolan doesn't, I think the next director could while still keeping Nolan's continuity.
jbak368
jbak368 - 8/29/2010, 10:03 PM
I also don't think it makes sense to use Selina Kyle and not Catwoman, because all great Batman villains have to be reflections of Batman himself, and the fact that Selina knows what it is to live behind the mask (of a wealthy socialite/costumed adventurer) is what gives her that. It also makes sense in terms of the established character arcs (for the same reason that Selina is really the one for Bruce, when it all comes down to it) in that Selina can understand and accept what it takes for Bruce to live his life the way he must on a level that Rachel never could. All of Rachel's concerns about his "mask" are things that Selina could deal with, because she's the same way.

They introduced Joker and Two-Face in TDK. My money's on Riddler and Catwoman.

I want to see Batman 4 too, but that's really only one of the options available to WB after Nolan leaves. They could reboot, or reboot but without the origin story, or go the Hulk sequel/reboot route, or whatever, but I do think they ought to transition Nolan's world into a more out-there one. Really, a second trilogy should probably focus overall on the character of Dick Grayson, tracking him from the death of his parents until he becomes Nightwing.

jbak368 - 8/30/2010, 9:24 AM
I also agree that a Batman/Superman movie is a must. I don't understand why anyone would disagree, because those two characters are very important to each others' development. Batman doesn't reach the fullness of his badass potential until there's a Superman he has to be able to beat.
MrGuyX
MrGuyX - 8/30/2010, 12:44 PM
I like Levitt for it because he can play a very like-able character to a raging psychopath. And also dicaprio might be too big of a name and might take attention away from Bale/Batman
Superman8
Superman8 - 8/30/2010, 2:28 PM
I think Nolan will stick to the bigger name villains like the riddler and penguin considering this is the last movie. most movie goers dont know about hush or black mask. it is safe to say that his past 2 batman movies probably brought in more 'non fans' than most comic book movies. he doesnt want to screw taht up by going with mostly unknown villains. i think bringing in catwoman for only one movie is a bad idea. go with the riddler.

Heres what we need
Riddler-cop gone mad(david gordon levitt)
Hush-assassin (tom hardy)
black mask-crime lord obseesed with masks(Leonardo di caprio)

tell me what u think
GusGalaxy
GusGalaxy - 8/31/2010, 9:47 PM
i think they can incorporate all of em! think about it, same number of good forces as there are bad:

Protagonists:
Christian Bale: Bruce Wayne/Batman
Gary Oldman: Jim Gordon
Michael Caine: Alfred Pennyworth
Morgan Freeman: Lucius Fox

Antagonists:
Leonardo DiCaprio: Black Mask
Marion Cotillard: Talia al Ghul
Joseph Gordon Levitt: The Riddler
Tom Hardy: Hush

How do you incorporate 4 major aggressive forces? well, Black Mask wants to be the superior force of crime in Gotham, he hires Hush to be his muscle, his own personal Batman, one who rivals the caped crusader exactly, only willing to break and bend all the rules.. Then you have Talia, who Bruce develops a romance with, only he doesn't realize how much of a threat she is, while The Riddler will be the one putting all the pieces in place, to lure him to Talia and maybe even the others, all for his own twisted little Joker-inspired gameplan! Just An Idea..

GusGalaxy - 8/31/2010, 9:50 PM
Now with recent rumors that Marion might be too busy for the film, we can always cast Talia with my personal favorite, ELLEN PAGE!!! now she is amazing..

nice ideas.
altough talia would make the film busy....
I think the movie shoukd be a minimum of 3 hours.
RyKnow
RyKnow - 9/2/2010, 9:02 AM
@ XxBLACKMASKxX - I reckon the film will definitely clock in at 3hrs.

I recently saw Inception, and although I like a lot of the ideas on these posts, Ellen Page still seems like a little kid and would just look plain ridiculous as either Talia or Catwoman. I don't think either should be in the film though. After the events in The Dark Knight, I think Bruce Wayne has other things on his mind than starting a romance, which is what everyone thinks should happen if they're included.
Tom Hardy was brilliant in Inception, and I agree with John Conner's idea of using him as the Penguin. Now that's a curve ball, good casting choice. But alas, Nolan's already said it's unlikely they'll use the Penguin.
Leo or Levitt could do the Riddler justice. I don't think Leo will steal any limelight from Bale, I mean, look at Batman Begins, Bale was acting opposite Liam Neeson!!
Not too clued up on Black Mask, but the idea of him being a rising gangster would keep the continuity of the films in terms of the mob.

Good article, and good posts :)

I must admitt it would be unnessesary for a female role.
However, i think the best villians would be
HUSH
RIDDLER
BLACK MASK

@ BLACKMASK - I won't lie, I know next to nothing about Hush. Is they're any good collections/graphic novels I could get my hands on featuring him. I'd like to read a bit about the character before I make an opinion about him being in the film. Cheers bud.

@rynow
Here's what you need:
Batman:Hush
Batman:heart of hush
As of right now those are the best stories that truely focus on him.
He also is currently appearing in Batman:Streets of Gotahm
Bud
Bud - 9/5/2010, 1:14 PM
If the Riddler is a villain in this movie, and the previous two movies are based around two graphic novels (year one/ the long halloween), Then this movie should have Hush as a second villain and be based on the "Hush" graphic novel...

..Give Black Mask a cameo in the movie as well...

what i have always wanted was for some director to do what peter jackson did, basically take a crew of actors and go to a location and shoot a trilogy and then take the time to cut, edit, and special effect it. and the trilogy i want to see is the knightfall trilogy. it can be done, and done correctly. LOTR was so good b/c of the way it was shot. the matrix 2 and 3 was done the same way. simply imagine an already written 3 part story made into a motion picture trilogy! awesome!

ok, First,

charlize Theron should play Catwoman. Hands Down.

Joseph Gordon Levitt should play Riddler

Philip Seymour Hoffman should play Penguin

and include the guy that played scarecrow and there's your cast.
