BATMAN V SUPERMAN Director Zack Snyder Reveals Crazy Reason MPA Originally Gave The Movie An R-Rating

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder has revealed the bonkers reason the Motion Picture Association decided to give the 2016 movie an R-Rating after watching an early cut. Check it out...

Zack Snyder's movies have frequently pushed the boundaries of PG-13 and are, more often than not, R-Rated. An extended cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice released on Blu-ray received an R, but the theatrical cut boasted the same (mostly) kid-friendly rating as the majority of superhero blockbusters.

During the recent Full Circle event (via The Direct), Batman v Superman's VFX Supervisor Jon Des Jardin reflected on how they were asked to make adjustments to some scenes in order to make the MPA happy.

The reason for that, however, is nothing short of ridiculous.

"We couldn’t do the blood splat on the wall for the crate, but we kept taking all those things out, and it was still getting an R-rating. And then you got that note from them: 'Well, we just think that Batman’s too mean to Superman.' And we were like, 'Can you really comment on that?'"

Yes, the MPA decided to weigh in on how the Man of Steel was being treated by the Dark Knight! How that relates to the rating is hard to say, and Snyder would go on to share his take on why they likely found fault with the two heroes going toe-to-toe.

"I didn’t think that was in [their] domain to just not like the idea of them fighting and so now it's R," he recalls. "They were just like, 'We think it’s rude that they’re fighting.’'And I was like, 'I’m sorry, it’s in the title." [They said] 'Is there any way you can cut them fighting? How about they just team up and like each other?’ How about that? Maybe, they argue in the first act, but then they shake hands, and then like they fight the bad guy together.'"

"I go, 'Well, they kind of fight the bad guy together at the end. Didn’t you see that?' And they're like, 'Ah, well, there’s a lot of fighting before that.'"

It's baffling to hear that a ratings board decided to take this much involvement in how a movie's story plays out, though it's possible Snyder - who does tend to go off on the odd tangent - is referring to notes from the studio here as well.

Do you think Batman was too mean to Superman in Dawn of Justice?

What if the MPAA in the finale says “MPAA, what a joke”, and wears rick flaggs shirt in his honor?

Blaming the rating system is a new one

@ShimmyShimmyYA - the MPAA has always been a controversy to many directors because its just a bunch of parents that don't watch or aren't knowledgeable about movies, yet they rate them?

You can cast child actors in a role where they swear and kill people, but they cannot watch themselves in theater do it because of the r-rating?

You can show Wolverine or Thor's butt in a pg-13 film, but a female butt is censored or r-rated like Tom Hank's Splash movie.

Its always been ridiculous lol.

The only takeaway from this ridiculous article is to show that the MPAA does not have a specific set of guidelines and rules. Their decisions are clearly based on opinion.
That’s not how to evaluate movies for ratings.

@TyrantBossMedia - and this is why RT is crap, grading something on a yes or no is stupid af

@bobevanz - You aren’t getting any argument from me against Rotten Tomatoes. It has been proven worthless.

@TheNewYorker -

Because, like the waking dead, the Snyder zombies still walk the Earth.

The MPAA is a bunch of schmucks, movie ratings don't matter, and most times they'll make something nc-17 for themes, but gratuitous gore porn is R. It's all screwed up

Maybe they were trying to spare the kids from seeing that godawful movie.

But even then, what a ridiculously clownish reason for a rating.

Both good points.

I mean, their whole fight could have been avoided in the first few seconds of them meeting on the rooftop.

Instead of Superman pushing Batman 30 feet through the air he could have just said, "Look dude. Lex kidnapped my mom and he's gonna kill her. Can you help me?"

Fight avoided. There's no way Batman would let an innocent lady get kidnapped and killed.

Honestly, if Zack had listened to the MPAA, the movie would probably be significantly better.

Such a dumb reason for an R rating. Law and order SVU has more adult related content and they’re are daytime television. I thought they were going to say because Bruce Wayne’s training montage was too sexy.

I do admit the reasons for fighting felt pretty hardcore. R-Rated though? Not sure

"we just think they shouldn't be fighting"...

... and the general audience agreed. Could have been such a better picture with an actual premise to what they were doing, how long it lasted, and their ultimate goal of teaming up.

BVS is one of the worst super hero movies ever. It’s depiction of Superman is terrible. Furthermore it’s decision to introduce Wonder Woman and the death of Superman storyline was abysmal at its core.

The SECOND film of your cinematic universe and you do the death of Superman storyline???

That’s like if in Iron Man 2 they kill off Tony Stark.
